Preemptive Attention to Rush fans: Saying that Rush has such great instrument playing that we should ignore the vocals; is like recommending a girl who gives great head, as long as you ignore the part where she bites off your testicles.

I think it's kind of interesting. I could post an article about any other band and you'd get a few people going out of their way to post in a thread about a band they don't care for but not many. Post any Rush story that isn't about the fat bloviator and the cockroaches come pouring out of the woodwork to make sure everyone gets a piece of their mind.

Naa sometimes we manage to have a good conversation. It is usually when the headline doesnt promote "Band X = God" or "Band X = Suck" comments.

I dont care either way about Rush, think they are cool from what I've hear, but I dont listen to them ever. They just seem to spark the kind of conversations everyone hates about the Music Tab

You stick around here long enough, you get used to it.
In the end, I realized Rush's music doesn't need me to defend it. It defends itself pretty damn well.

^^^We need a little more of this. There's too much of "it's not what I adore, so it's BAD". No, it might not be your cup of tea, but that doesn't make it bad. I'm sure there are plenty of talented people making Country&Western or Polka or whatever, and I'm not going to find out about them because I don't listen to their genres, but they're still just as talented. I've never bought anything by Prince and have no desire to do so, but that doesn't mean he's bad, and in fact he's pretty obviously a musical genius. Some people may just be going for the troll, but there's too many people who need to tear down other stuff in order to justify their own preferences.

That doesn't mean there isn't bad stuff out there. But "I don't like it" is not sufficient for assigning that label.

I liken people who listen to Rush voluntarily to Bush voters: You know they're hurting themselves and others, you can't understand why, and anytime someone says something negative about their beloved they are defensive and ready to give you "evidence" of why they are right. Inevitably it just ends up being the same old points they've always argued.
There can be no convincing them that they are wrong, even dangerously so. They wont listen and they don't want to.
The only option is to ignore them and leave them to their misery.
Enjoy your album.

Thank you! I LOVE his voice.

When I was in grade 4, "Take Off!" was a huge hit here in Canada, and I thought it was a chick singing with Bob and Doug McKenzie. Didn't find out it was some guy from a band called Rush till I was in high school.

The Canadian Zeppelin. Nuff said.

Dont like em personally, but wildly influential within music and their careers have stood the test of time. Its kind of like they're a musician's band.

Stop the hate, they're a very talented band. I just dont care for them.

It was in 1982 when I was pledging a fraternity. RUSH was playing in a town about 100 miles from the university and some buddies of mine and I were first to buy our general admission tickets. As fate would have it, initiation was the same week as the Friday concert. In a panic, my friend called me and asked if we were still on for Friday (this was a Tuesday). Lying my buttocks off, I told the fraternity fat-cats I had to bolt out of town to see my mother who was going into the hospital for surgery.

We went to the concert, I skipped parts of initiation and got in the frat anyway. Good thing I had my priorities in a row as I quit the frat the next semester.

Now I am older, and my 14 year old daughter knows the lyrics to all of RUSH's best hits better than I do.

RUSH ROCKS ON!

Redundant point is redundant.

Listen, I will admit that there are some early Rush songs that feature Geddy wailing away in high registers (in fact, I think anything pre-Moving Pictures is unlistenable), but the truth is that Geddy doesn't sing like that anymore and hasn't for years. By adhering to this obviously inaccurate point, you're missing 20+ years of great songs. Ged may hit a few high notes live when he has to for older tunes, but the fact remains that he quite simply CAN'T sing like that anymore. Age and all that.

I remember in 1974 when we were all partying at a buddy's house and another friend came running in the house with the first Rush album. He said "you guys have to hear this", took off whatever record was playing and put Rush on the turntable. I've been hooked ever since.

It's best just to ignore the bashers. If they actually listened to the band with an unbiased ear
their opinion would have a little merit, but they don't so it doesn't.

/yes there are lots of bands I can't stand

Darth Invictus [TotalFark] 2009-01-19 11:34:54 PM
I rarely get to listen to Rush because Lady Invictus can't stand Geddy's voice. Pity. She likes their instrumental stuff, though.

That said, I really haven't cared for much they did after "Grace Under Pressure".

I still like to smoke weed and play Cygnus X-1, The Body Electric, and La Villa Strangiato with the volume at 20, just like when I was 17 years old.

For the hardcore fans, here is the short story, A Nice Morning Drive, on which Neil Peart based the lyrics of "Red Barchetta". (new window)

Anyone who drives a roadster today can appreciate it, especially after dealing with clueless, SUV-driving coonts.

Okay, I'm hitting the sack and won't keep you all in suspense.

It is The Spirit of Radio, at the very end crescendo. Bonus points if you can tell us what radio station they are singing aboot. I'll answer that one tomorrow. Somebody continue the game with a new question.

Magnetar: People who biatch about Geddy's voice are the same people who can't watch movies with subtitles.

Um, that's not quite the same at all. Vocals pretty high in the mix and in the upper register is pretty hard to get around. I just don't think his voice is that bad, but I can understand the hate.

I like Rush, but some of their output is beyond mediocre and some of it downright awful, yet they ahve an extremely hardcore following that cannot admit that.

I saw the music video for "The Pass" from "Presto" on youtube, and I discovered that it's a great song. And a great video. Hell, the video doesn't look like it was made in 1989. more like the mid 90's.
hell..... the song could've been written and played in the mid to late 90's as far as i knew [if i didn't know the real date].
great music, great lyrics [one of Pert's best lyrics of the late 80's / early 90's IMHO]

MTV used to play that one back when it was new. Probably the last Rush vid they did that with... Great song, a perfect example of Geddy Lee playing beautifully without going off. That album is filled with killer hooks!

craigdamage 2009-01-20 07:19:15 AM
Everything after "Signals" is vacant to me.

I have stated before I think "Grace" and "Power" have ok compositions but the sh*tty 80s sounding production ruins them both.

Nothing Rush has done in the last twenty plus years sounds as good as their classic records. Their recent songs are utterly empty of the hooks and riffage they used to have.

I have not heard one song by them that is distinct or memorable.
There are no more "Working Man" "Bastille Day" or "Limelight" songs on their records.

Listen to "Something For Nothing" from 2112.
That song is basically regarded as a disposable "filler" from that album. Maybe the least recognizable track from an epic release. NOTHING Rush has done since 1986 sounds even remotely as good as that "modest" song.

Rush geeks--give it up.
The only classic band that sucks worse in the modern age is Jethro Tull.

Four songs from Roll The Bones? WHY? It's easily the weakest effort of anything post-Presto. I mean, some songs are OK (Dreamline is great and Bravado is awesome), but overall it's just... I dunno. Compare it to, say, Counterparts and it doesn't hold a candle.

Counterparts is awesome.

I love T4E, but then again it was a product of the times for me. And only Driven off of it? Good song, but what about Half The World? The title track?

Vapor Trails is great, despite the poor audio mixing.

Snakes and Arrows may very well be the best Rush album since Moving Pictures.
