That was very moving. I almost dare not say it, but my cynical ass is starting to have some renewed hope for our country.

For those of us who are both too young and disinterested in patriotism during grade school, which lyrics were removed for the sanitized version?

Or more succinctly, what am I looking at here?

Great moment though. Next couple days are going to be awesome. Then we'll see if it continues.

Yeah, I hate to say it, since I hate America, but I watched the highlights of today's goings-ons, and it almost made me proud.

The verses discussed can be found in the link, under the line that says Here are the original verses added back into the song today.

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me;
Sign was painted, it said private property;
But on the back side it didn't say nothing;
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

I don't know if Obama will be able to make a real difference or lead us in the right direction, but damn, it does give me some hope. That made me shed a tear.

Good to see you, Argh. We missed you. I guess you mashed the keyboard correctly in the password field.

Obama has such a large plate in front of him, I don't think anyone will be able to fix the mess anytime soon. It's going to take time.

But I think right now most Americans want change & hope from the Bush era and rightly so. How well will Obama do? I don't know. Ask me 2 years from now and I'll be able to tell you. I have very high hopes for him and am not expecting him to fix any problems immediately over night.

ok, so I get why the first verse would raise some hackles ... but what led to the other two getting dropped/changed?

This log is your log,
This log is my log
When lightning struck it
it hit a bucket

I poured some onions inside my trousers

This log - it used to be a tree
Now it spreads love to you and me
Hey look - it's heading out to sea

bimalc: ok, so I get why the first verse would raise some hackles ... but what led to the other two getting dropped/changed?

The second one has shadows of Commies, which would definitely get it pulled depending on when it was censored out, the third I think just implies too much freedom, and we just can't have that. I have to say I like those verses though.

/"When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a Communist."

That was wonderful. I wasn't a big Obama supporter but I find myself having to tamp my hopes down. It's the old "if it seems too good to be true it probably is" thing. What the hell, I'll risk getting slapped down one more time.

It is a machine of total destruction, rage and chaos.

It is the music of the mongoloid car chase.

It cannot be reasoned with.

It won't stop. Ever. It banjos. That's what it does. THAT'S ALL IT DOES.

I learned the first and second verses with slightly different words:

As I went walking, I saw a sign there
and on that sign it said, "No tresspassin'"
But on the other side, it didn't say nothin'
that side was made for you and me.

In the squares of the city, in the shadow of a steeple,
By the relief office, I seen my people...
(the rest is the same).

That's from a songbook that was edited by Pete Seeger, so I'm not sure where/when the lyrics were changed.

I'm told there's also a Canadian version, with the same verses, but the following chorus:

"This land is your land, this land is my land,
From Bonavista to Vancouver Island,
From the Artic Circle to the Great Lake Waters,
This land was made for you and me."

I saw some people in the shadow of the steeple.
And they were hungry and they were wondering,
Does this land still belong to you and me?
