oh christ. whether they intended to black him out or not, hbo has just earned the scorn of a lot of angry liberals.

It's unfortunate, since his invocation was really good. (new window)

The fact that he has the nerve to say what has needed to be said for two years trumps teh ghey. Carry on, Excellency. Or Your Grace. Or whatever.

Wow. And this is the Obama team's big apology gesture to the gays?

"Let's schedule a gay priest at the last minute to mollify the gays. OK... but put him on stage 10 minutes before the broadcast starts so nobody will see him. The homos will take any bone you throw at them!"

Yes, I watched the beginning of both today (live and encore #1) and they didn't show it.

bobbette: Wow. And this is the Obama team's big apology gesture to the gays?

um... no one really ever said that it was, and even gene robinson said he didn't think that's why he was invited.

but if you insist on finding a negative angle just to find a reason to be angry, i guess you could think of it that way.

quickdraw: Who the hell watches HBO anymore?

if i'm not mistaken, hbo had exclusive rights to broadcast the event, and the news networks had to grab their footage through hbo. i'm not absolutely certain, but i know i read something about it yesterday.

That was amazingly stupid of them. in this day and age, with instant communication and analysis, trying to blatantly censor someone like that is beyond stupid. HBO just ensured that everyone goes and looks up the guy's message.

i doubt they did it intentionally (i don't see why anyone would, and i especially don't see why hbo of all people would, it's not like they shy away from controversy or gay issues). it was probably just a boneheaded producer who made a really unfortunate err in judgment.

it's possible, I suppose. But it seems a bit odd to cut the guy out of the presentation like that.

Presidents can't make the legislators do anything ... you're still better off voting in a president that doesn't hate gays while the rest of the country needs to be persuaded to vote for legislators who don't hate gays.

I'm not sure I understand your post. In any event, I'm not gay. I just thought the "we voted for him and didn't get anything" was kind of off target.

well think about how our political process is generally aired. at the conventions, you had to watch cspan to see any of the opening speeches. i would find it way more unusual that they intentionally cut him out rather than they just didn't think anyone would care to see him.

still, some idiot producer is about to get a lot of grief.

some gays, and some gay rights groups, believe that if you are not 150% supportive of each and everything ever said or done by any gay person anywhere at any time, then you're a queer bashing homophobe.

Oddly enough, that's the same sort of mindset you see in religious fanatics - you are either with them or you're with the enemy.

At any rate, fanatical dedication certainly hasn't helped the gay rights cause very much.

I had to watch CSPANN just to find out the details on the bailout legislation. F*cking CNN slackers. watching how the major news organizations chop up the raw footage turns my stomach.

The invocation was given about 10-15 minutes before 2:30. Then they waited until right around 2:30 to start the remainder of the festivities. On the one hand, it certainly seemed like they were trying to get the invocation out of the way before things really got underway; on the other hand, they seemed to be having some technical difficulties around that time anyway (for the first half or so of the invocation, many/most of the large speakers around the reflecting pool were apparently not working).

I'm pissed off because I'm an Episcopalian who supports equal rights for GLBTs. Why the fark do I have to listen to hate-mongering Baptists, fundies, and evangelicals constantly gay-bashing on national TV? And to then have HBO censor and/or cut out our openly gay Episcopalian bishop?

/Shame on you HBO.

A Prayer for the Nation and Our Next President, Barack Obama

By The Rt. Rev. V. Gene Robinson, Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire

Opening Inaugural Event
Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC
January 18, 2009

Welcome to Washington! The fun is about to begin, but first, please join me in pausing for a moment, to ask God's blessing upon our nation and our next president.

O God of our many understandings, we pray that you will...

Bless us with tears - for a world in which over a billion people exist on less than a dollar a day, where young women from many lands are beaten and raped for wanting an education, and thousands die daily from malnutrition, malaria, and AIDS.

Bless us with anger - at discrimination, at home and abroad, against refugees and immigrants, women, people of color, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

Bless us with discomfort - at the easy, simplistic "answers" we've preferred to hear from our politicians, instead of the truth, about ourselves and the world, which we need to face if we are going to rise to the challenges of the future.

Bless us with patience - and the knowledge that none of what ails us will be "fixed" anytime soon, and the understanding that our new president is a human being, not a messiah.

Bless us with humility - open to understanding that our own needs must always be balanced with those of the world.

Bless us with freedom from mere tolerance - replacing it with a genuine respect and warm embrace of our differences, and an understanding that in our diversity, we are stronger.

Bless us with compassion and generosity - remembering that every religion's God judges us by the way we care for the most vulnerable in the human community, whether across town or across the world.

And God, we give you thanks for your child Barack, as he assumes the office of President of the United States.

Give him wisdom beyond his years, and inspire him with Lincoln's reconciling leadership style, President Kennedy's ability to enlist our best efforts, and Dr. King's dream of a nation for ALL the people.

Give him a quiet heart, for our Ship of State needs a steady, calm captain in these times.

Give him stirring words, for we will need to be inspired and motivated to make the personal and common sacrifices necessary to facing the challenges ahead.

Make him color-blind, reminding him of his own words that under his leadership, there will be neither red nor blue states, but the United States.

Help him remember his own oppression as a minority, drawing on that experience of discrimination, that he might seek to change the lives of those who are still its victims.

Give him the strength to find family time and privacy, and help him remember that even though he is president, a father only gets one shot at his daughters' childhoods.

And please, God, keep him safe. We know we ask too much of our presidents, and we're asking FAR too much of this one. We know the risk he and his wife are taking for all of us, and we implore you, O good and great God, to keep him safe. Hold him in the palm of your hand - that he might do the work we have called him to do, that he might find joy in this impossible calling, and that in the end, he might lead us as a nation to a place of integrity, prosperity and peace.

AMEN.
