You know, I was just looking at the pictures of the cute puppies in the story, and then I saw this at the end of the article:

FTFA: NEXT WEEK: The Army engineer panicked and shot the gentle giant dead. Now I wanted to kill him

Wha?

These are not "proper marines." They're Royal Marines. That means they get to be badass without having to be homoerotic cyborg violence machines.

Animals fark each all the time, I don't necessarily find it normal for a man to fark a chicken though.

Behind those cute faces, those beady little eyes, and those fuzzy little ears, lie the evil masterminds that will one day rule the world. And those brits will rue the day they 'saved' them. Rue, I tell you! Rueeeee!.

Yeah. Because saving 3 puppies really makes up for murdering innocent children in their sleep.

Ahmed: Hey Mohamed, what are you doing?
Mohamed: Im deploying a roadside bomb to kill those infidels.

Amhed: Why?
Mohammed: Those assholes killed my 3 kids.

Ahmed: Look, they saved those 3 puppies!
Mohamed: awwwwww thats so cute. Nevermind then Im going home.

platedlizard 2009-01-18 01:17:17 PM
Yeah, that sort of thing happens all the time. A family friend of mine, an Army Ranger, rescued a dog in Afghanistan and eventually found him a home with a soldier that returned to the US. Of course, this being James, the first couple months consisted of the dog trying to bite everything that moved.

/eventually the dog calmed down and became nice
//James also rescued a donkey there too
///said donkey bit and kicked
////nice guy, but he attracts farked up pets

Stories like this reaffirm my belief that the majority of soldiers are really decent guys (and gals) that are trying to do one of the most difficult jobs in existence as best they can while suffering from both a) civilians that want to sterotype them all as sadistic and insane as Col. Kurtz and b) Inept and/or corrupt government leaders that really have no farking idea about what's really going on.

Can you seriously imagine how much simpler the US troops jobs would have been if instead of building a multi-million dollar pediatric cancer hospital there, Laura Bush had used the support and resources she had garnered to build a regular hospital to combat the dysentery and other sanitation diseases that were running rampant through Iraq at the time?

Not to mention if her asshat of a husband had actually not put out troops in harms way for a big Haliburton payday in the first place.

What was Cheney's stock windfall after his former company got the rebuilding contract? Around $250 million, iirc?

'Let's keep this one quiet, eh?' I said as I dusted myself down. At 37 I was getting too old for this.

What a sad story. I don't trust for a minute that the transport will get the dogs to safety. I think all resources should be devoted to saving dogs, not people. The people are cruel, sexist, ignorant, evil barbarians; the dogs are innocent.

Stories like that make more irate about stories like this...

"The Canadian government will spend $50 million to repair Afghanistan's second-largest dam, which has fallen into disrepair after decades of war, International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda said Sunday."

Dead-Guy 2009-01-19 02:46:58 PM
awww.. I hate dogs, but I "get" the importance the soldier placed on them, and I'm glad that to his knowledge, the dogs were rescued.

Of course, locally (to where the story ocurred) dogs are considered a lesser lifeform, and the message those troops inadvertantly sent-out is that we're pampering a lesser lifeform rather than them.

It doesn't matter what or why you are doing something, it only matters what it looks like you're doing in the eyes of your judges. "In the eyes of your judges" is definately dictated by the cultural predjudices of those judges. Since his actions agree with your cultural predjudices, in your eyes he was "Right".

Being nice to dogs, or being offensive to the locals who had their sport broken up carries a certain amount of risk to it. For those of you that "don't care" about that aspect, great.. it's easy to be you, isn't it?

For those that run the risk of facing retalliation for such acts, it's not quite as simple, and I hope that you appreciate what it really means to have done this.

If you refuse to have an open mind, read no further, or risk being offended. Those that are open minded, might appreciate a differing viewpoint from the usual drivel.

"When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
That's usually what folks say despondingly to american tourists, but the phrase seems to apply equally here.. Respect the wishes, beleifs, and customs of the people you're "saving" or you aren't saving a thing.

Not to say anyone's wrong in what they've done, or are doing, but at least consider this aspect before making a decision to throw away policy.

Seems cruel to us, but an obvious choice to them. Why are we so much better that we must impose our beleif system upon them?

Your culture commits chemical warfare on insects, does it not? You also eat cows. That's not "right" by the very rules many claim to espouse. These folks eat dogs, and use them for entertainment. (ok, I don't know the culture well enough to state that with authority, but hopefully you "catch my drift")

Culturally, you beleive that it's important that nothing should suffer, yet everything suffers regardless. You think chickens don't suffer? Even egg laying chickens? Did you miss all the revealing videos on that?

Do you think you're not killing animals and forests by purchasing wood? Do you ride a bike to work to save the environment, and yet buy food from a grocery store that is stocked by big environmentally nasty trucks?

Or do you drive a car that's partially battery powered to save the environment and yet still go plug-in that car to charge the battering using electricity that has to be made for you from coal burning or nuclear power plants?

There is no "Right" solution to any of this stuff, and your opinions or mine is no better than that of those who support dog fights and suchlike in their culture.

Could you imagine what would've happened if someone had challenged our ability to have slaves at the time our cultures were busy doing it? That would have been a war.

Save them by saving their culture and way of life, or you are destroying everything they lived for anyways, and there is little point in saving them.

If you want to "preach enlightenment to the heathens", then by all means, go in there and give it your best shot, allow them to choose how they will process your opinions, rather than forcing change upon them simply because you were born and raised somewhere else with differing levels of personal concern, and access to larger guns.

I don't write this from a "higher" moral ground, I write it from an open mind that recognizes that just because something is "different" it's not better or worse just because someone's opinion of it is stronger (or whatever).

Of course, it goes wihout saying that if these had been cats, I'd be on the phone to my congressman demanding that provisions be made for folks to break military protocols to rescue them, and anyone attempting to block them shall be removed from the chain of command immediately. That's just my opinion and preference.

Some folks indiscriminately gas rodents and insects. Me, I don't care much for dogs, and value their culture more than that, but not more than cats. Amusing, certainly.. wrong? not more wrong than you anyways.
