And yet people will be outraged if Israel retaliates.

Neither side 100% wants peace, so a cease-fire is a little ludicrous.

There are elements on both sides that just want to duke it out until the other side is dead.

They are not only fighting each other but themselves. That is an unwinnable situation for anyone.

Yeah...

Israel pushes and pushes until just before Obama is in office. (Who didn't call that one?) Then as predicted, by about 300 people here, they call a cease fire just in time to say LOOK AT WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO US!!!

Pfft, c'mon, you already knew that the Hamas definition of "ceasefire" is, "You guys stop shooting, we'll carry on exactly as we have in the past."

You're out of your gourd.

In the first place, Israel hasn't resumed their drive.

Secondly, no (other) country would be expected to sit still under the attacks Israel was getting. Hamas has the chance to get genuine peace, but so far both their statements and actions both state they want war.

It'll be alright. Maybe Hamas can just declare a unilateral ceasefire after their last rocket touches down and then cry foul when Israel strikes back.

Anyhoo, kidding aside, it does say "militants" and not Hamas. Hamas-led factions are different from renegade factions in that the renegade factions are kind of difficult to get to the table and even harder to police.

It's sad because it's true.

Bunnyhat 2009-01-18 04:10:01 AM
"The troops on the ground is a declaration of war against the Palestinians," said Osama Hamdan, a representative of Hamas, which has held political control of Gaza since 2007. "Israel did not offer anything."

Oh really?

So all those rocket attacks against Israel is just your way of saying "was'up?" right?

I'll buy that has soon as Hamas even looks like they want to do any compromise.

Hamas has already said that they refuse to stop fighting irrespective of Israel's halt.

What makes you think Israel doesn't want peace?

There are elements on both sides that just want to duke it out until the other side is dead.

False equivalence.

Hamas wants Israel destroyed. It's the cornerstone of their movement.

Israel was out of Gaza for some time. Israel doesn't care who rules Gaza so long as they're left alone. The attacks against Israel started within about a week or so of Hamas taking over. Even during the supposed "truce" they continued, albeit at a lower level.

They are not only fighting each other but themselves. That is an unwinnable situation for anyone.

Israel isn't fighting itself. Hamas did fight other Palestinians in that they wiped out the PA supporters, but they're first and foremost after Israel's jugular.

If you didn't rtfa, then stfu.

Hamas did not fire any rockets. Are you another pro-israeli armchair general who gets sudden onset of dyslexia when you read "rockets fired"?

There are many people in Gaza. Just as there are many people in Israel.

When official representatives reach an agreement, they do so as representatives of the people. When slackjawed retards kill Palestinians/Israelis in defiance of the official agreements, they do so as representatives of themselves.

So, when a renegade faction fires a rocket, it's like an Israeli settler shooting at a Palestinian farmer. It's a tragedy, yes, but not a violation of the agreement by the representatives.

One other point of information you seem to not understand. Hamas does not have the resources to police the renegade factions and the use of Qassam rockets made from common scraps and garbage. Israel would find it costly to patrol its settlers and ensure they do not kill Palestinian farmers. Violence will happen, but violations by individuals should not be representative of the wills of the nations to which the perpetrators belong.

grotto_man: Hamas wants Israel destroyed. It's the cornerstone of their movement.

So, do you think Hamas is capable of doing this?

What sort of odds do you give them?

Is the chance of their success so high that you must kill hundreds of civilians to "send a message" to them to knock it off?

tortilla burger 2009-01-18 04:16:15 AM
How childish. This entire conflict is akin to two siblings having a temper tantrum. The small one pokes the big one, who punches the small one. After crying a little bit, the small one continues to poke the big one. Won't they ever grow up?

maracle 2009-01-18 04:16:40 AM
It's not much of a peace fire, Israel has not withdrawn from the Gaza Strip. Seems like a PR move more than anything else, why would Hamas agree to a peace fire under the circumstances?

And how can they be firing rockets if the stated goal was to destroy Hamas's ability to fire rockets and Israel has accomplished all their goals and more? This looks like a repeat of Lebanon...

No other country would be tolerated to force people into hyper-urbanized ghettos and told that if they behave they'll get their land back except for any parcel than any Baruch Goldstein-worshipping Irgun-wannabe piece of human filth declares was part of the Israelite kingdom and a necessary part of a Jewish nation.

PlasticMoby 2009-01-18 04:19:28 AM
You know what, i don't think i'm alone here when i say just let them kill each other off and be done with it. Wipe each other out completely so this shiat'll finally be over and done with.

I just honestly don't care which side is right and which is wrong anymore.

that_other_internet 2009-01-18 04:20:05 AM
Bunnyhat: I'll buy that has soon as Hamas even looks like they want to do any compromise.

Just a tip for your future reading. When you hear "militants" or "renegades", don't assume "Hamas".

They observed the past ceasefire and so far have observed this ceasefire.

Look into their efforts a little more and be able to discern between Fatah-allied renegade factions in Gaza and actual Hamas-led factions.

Not to say that Hamas-led factions are all happy puppies, but much of the confusion arises from the actions of renegades, not signatories to ceasefires who are represented by Hamas.

Also, it's pretty likely that renegades are going to be a constant source of violence after these latest attacks by Israel.

I mean, killing 1,100 people, 700 civilians, and over 300 children tends to leave a mark, y'know? And declaring a unilateral ceasefire immediately after killing so many civilians is...well, it's a bit on the "wishful thinking" side.

May Israel and Palestine wake up one morning to find all their children, even those still in their mother's bellies, vanished into thin air, and all their men and women sterile.

Then they can kill each other all they want without making another child have to suffer for their stupidity.

JohnnyC 2009-01-18 04:21:01 AM
It's entirely possible that they didn't get the memo. I'm sure there are some technical difficulties going on with lines of communication there right about now. Besides... do you think they're beaten into submission and that Israel can just say, "okay, we've killed enough of your people, no more fighting", and everyone is just going to listen? That's pretty unrealistic if you ask me.

After seeing their neighbors, friends, families, and children killed by Israeli attacks, it doesn't surprise me at all that they would feel the desire to fight back.

I'm not saying it's right or a good idea, I'm just saying I can understand why they might want to keep fighting.

grotto_man: Hamas has the chance to get genuine peace, but so far both their statements and actions both state they want war.

I guess some people just don't get the whole "you are killing us because you want peace" thing. If there is one place I feel at peace, it's staring down the barrel of a gun. Know what I mean?

Gwendolyn [TotalFark] 2009-01-18 04:21:40 AM
I have no problem with the both of them blowing each other up into the stone age. I do have a problem with the United States supporting one side of these ying-yangs over the other and using my tax dollars to do it.

Pull support from Israel and just let them go at it until one side is freaking dead OR we could arm the Palestinians just as well. Give them a few hundred aircraft and a couple of billion dollars worth of bombs. Train them to use it well and just let them both start blowing the fark out of each other. If the Palestinians were as well armed as the Israelis they wouldn't have to resort to suicide bombings and car bombs.

The more I think about it the more I like option B.

I'm of the opinion that the entire nation needs to be declared a UNESCO world heritage site and that all persons therein should be relocated to their choice of 15 or so countries. People could visit, but permanent residence would be forbidden, and any attempt to do so would result in immediate forced relocation to Rapa Iti, the closest you can get to the exact opposite side of the planet without being in the middle of the f'n ocean. Anyone who breaches the peace will be killed if not already dead, as will his immediate relatives, and the corpses desecrated.

It's completely a P.R. move. They cannot declare a "unilateral ceasefire" without a full withdrawl. They haven't done that, so they are still occupiers.

It would be as if the Chinese invaded the United States and then 20 days later declared a "cease fire" while still occupying our entire country with their military.

What kind of sap would believe that this would end well?

They had to. It's a new day here in the US. Obama isn't going to roll over for an 8-ball and some lap dances.

Israel has tried time and time again to make peace, and those animals keep attacking them. This has been going on for years, and every time violence has broken out, Israel hasn't been the aggressor. I LOL when I see anti-Israeli protesters.

PR move on Israel's part? Probably. But even if it was a genuine olive branch, the Palestinians would launch a rocket at it.

I can sum up this whole thing in a couple lines of dialogue...

Israel: "We're willing to live in peace if you leave us alone."

Palestinian government/terror group of the hour: "Allahu Akbar!!!! DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE!"

Israel: "LOL WUT?"

I think on similar lines sometimes. But, who's providing the medicine, food, and swords? That's Crusader talk.

My current radical opinion about Israel/Arab conflicts is that everyone should just leave Jerusalem. Evacuate. Get everyone out. Then, have the Swiss Guards move in, establish a perimeter, and keep everyone out who isn't inclined to be civil.
