Saxton and his father, who is in his 60s, made headlines in 2007 after they were convicted of stealing greenstone from South Westland between 1997 and 2003.

Anyone want to translate that into American? or any other widely spoken version of english.

As much as I hate ignorance, "translate that into American" cracks me the fark up.

/no I can't decipher that "greenstone" comment either

I did some googling & it appears to be a type of jade.

Another pilot says the practise is common - and claims it isn't dangerous as long as flyers aren't too distracted.

Shaving, Risk, skeet shooting, intercourse, and clog-dancing aren't dangerous for pilots either as long as they don't distract you. The point is to limit potential distractions, not limit something once it becomes a distraction, because then you crash your helicopter...

Wow. You thought that teenage driver texting her friend in the back seat was bad? People can't even put down the cell phone while piloting a helicopter!

Sometimes we're not very imaginative with names in N.Z. You'll find a Northland, a Southland and a Westland in this country and Westland is the western region of the South Island. Greenstone is a kind of jade and this guy and his dad didn't have the mining rights to it.

Yeah.. that's where you want a chopper pilots eyes. Inside the cockpit fiddling with a distracting electronic device.

WIN!

It's ironic because . . . uh . . . well, there is sorta a, um, no well, because when he was . . . hmmmm. Oh, I know. It is ironic because there is a picture of him with a phone . . . in the article . . . and therefore, there's, you know, sorta a thing going on there, with it, and stuff. See? Irony! Oh, yeah, and: Aristocrats!

What exactly don't you understand about that perfectly clear english sentence ?

That's not irony. Irony would be a photo of him at a speech telling people not to send text messages while flying.

El Morro: This (new window)would explain why these types of things happen more often than you think.

Yep, another pop-psych book with the same old theory: "We do X and we really can't help it, it's just.....irresistible." Barf. The truth is too simple for our sophisticated times. "We choose to do X when any adult maturity and good judgement tells us we shouldn't. We are wrong to do so. In certain cases, this can be destructive." Or in this case- fatal.

IF in fact his use of the cell phone caused the crash. All we know is that he DID text and he DID crash; no connection was established between the two in TFA. It's just as easy for me to speculate that the side-story of him being convicted of theft and sentenced to prison resulted in a despondent state of mind and he committed suicide. Nota bene: please don't reply to this stating that I'm asserting that he committed suicide. All I said was that it's just as easy (and possibly wrong) for me to say that as it is to say that the crash was due to texting on his cell phone. With the information given, either is possible, and both are unproven.

That reminds me of a PBS show, "Do You Speak American?" They travelled all over the country talking to people and noticing the vastly different ways people talked. You people up North talk really funny.

FTA: Toby Wallis said texting and flying was common among pilots and something he did himself. ....
"It's no different to changing the radio station in a car, but it could be dangerous if you are distracted by it."

Oh really. Drivers have push-buttons on our radios so we keep our eyes on the road when tuning a station. Do your texts appear on a Heads-Up-Display?

Where can I put money on Pilot Toby Wallis crashing soon?

That was very kind of you, but unnecessary: You see, he doesn't own a computer so he can't look things up on Google or Wiki. And besides, you'd have to mail him your answer because he doesn't have e-mail, and by that time this thread will no longer be topical.
