I'm not a fan of U2's music at all, but that's a pretty cool cover. Looks like something more in a Tool vibe.

go away, submitter. please.

I'm sorry pal, but that's a decent lookin' album cover.

I would somewhat agree with submitter, but then we are not in the vinyl days anymore, so that will make a nice, easily regognizable little graphic thing to download with the mp3z you kids download on your E-pod there

If only there was a phrase I could suggest to the submitter about not prejudging creative works by their outside packaging...

Say what you like about his music (which I actually like) but without doubt the Meat Loaf Bat out of Hell albums have some of the best album art of all time.

To bad album 3 was built because/during a squable between Steinman and Meat Loaf. I bought Bat Out of Hell 1 on an LP just for the cover art.

Yeah yeah yeah*, subby. Heard a few snippets of the single. I think the album will definitely be more interesting then their last two. That might not be saying much, though.
/* yes, deliberate

I like it. Memorable and recognizable.

The English Major [TotalFark] 2009-01-18 09:43:05 AM
I like U2 (and, by default, The Passengers). I have all the albums, including the "greatest hits" packages. I saw them in Chicago during the Vertigo tour.
That said, this "minimalist" approach to their artwork seems...an odd choice.

FTA:

Yes, that picture of a horizon line is the cover of U2's new album, No Line on the Horizon. No, it's not filled with minimal techno.

I laughed because the album cover would look perfect sitting alongside most Kompakt or M_nus releases.

JamMasterJamie 2009-01-18 10:32:41 AM
I'm a huge U2 fan but I feel I'd be remiss in pointing out that I quite clearly see a line on that horizon.

Millzners: reminds me of this

I was about to say this.

pecosdave: Say what you like about his music (which I actually like) but without doubt the Meat Loaf Bat out of Hell albums have some of the best album art of all time.

Those would be awesome if I airbrushed those onto the side of my van (aka, Shaggin' Wagon) while I rode around with my windows down and my mullet flowing in the wind.

Lord Snoopy's G.P.E.H. 2009-01-18 11:59:25 AM
Earguy: Right on, although I can't figure out why that page showed the cover for Al Stewart's Modern Times, instead of Year Of The Cat, (which has, in my opinion, one of the best album covers in life.)

pecosdave: If you like those covers, go find some issues of Heavy Metal from the seventies, if you haven't already. Richard Corben did whole comic stories in that style.

pecosdave--

The first BOOH is one of my all-time favorites. The second one was decent, but too made-for-radio for me. The third one, IMO, was a load of crap.

The record covers, however, are all pretty cool.

Well you beat me to it. The album cover like everything else U2 has ever done is nothing but a pale rip off of something great.

Can't wait to hear how Edge has stolen more licks from John McGeoch.

Montrose 2009-01-18 03:30:14 PM
The band's not stupid.

For one, they already have people making noise about the odd cover choice. "But there IS a line...!", "SUCK", "FAIL!", etc. There's no bad publicity, after all, and they just gave the artist who took that picture a huge boost.

For another, any actual line we see on any horizon is an illusion. We can travel towards it all our lives, never to find it. That's why they went with the literal approach rather than another image from the same artist, let's say www.sugimotohiroshi.com

It also reflects a video shot of the water outside one of the studios where U2 were recording 'Horizon':

Sea and Sky

So yeah, eipc f'n fail.

Kick ass, I'll keep an eye out and may even do some Half.com searches or something, I'm sure I can come up with them. I really like Heavy Metal when I'm in the mood for something twisted - which is only an occasional mood for me.

Oddly, the BOOH 2 is what got me started on Meat Loaf when it premiered I was a teen who never really payed attention to him before. There's quite a few songs I enjoy on 3, but I have to admit it wasn't put together NEARLY as well as the previous ones, probably because Steinman wasn't involved. I have to admit it, I actually really enjoyed It's all Coming Back to me Now, in addition to that In the Land of the Pig the Butcher is King and Seize the Night deserve some attention. But overall, I agree, not quite what the previous ones were.

BTW - I actually do like some of the non-Steinman albums.

Album art doesn't sell records. Look at the White Album, there was nothing on that god damn cover.

The new single is best heard loud, on a decent sound system. You can get if here for now

I agree. I first listened to it on my laptop. Meh...
Then I listened to it at home on my surround sound system and my velodyne subwoofer. The song rocks.
