(winona daily news) Stupid Village to raise water rates by 199 percent. Because 200 percent would have been just outrageous. Bonus: they're raising rates for fire protection by 208 percent. When guys in Jersey do that, they call it organized crime   (winonadailynews.com) divider line 37

Well, to be fair, 195% didn't seem like quite enough while 200% seemed excessive.

Or you could call it "paying for what you get."

An extra $20 a month for clean, safe drinking water? The horror!

Well said. They are digging new wells because the old ones were producing water with unsafe levels of nitrates. That costs money, which has to be split between the people using the water.

There's no well fairy.

Thank you. We pay nothing close to what the price of water should be. Maybe if the rates were higher everywhere people would be more economical with the worlds most valuable resource.

autothing 2009-01-17 04:23:04 PM
Big deal! Here in Bensenville, Illinois, the village passed a bond ONLY for small businesses (because 'businesses don't vote').

Instead of $22.50/month for sewer and water, there's an additional $238 surcharge on every bill each month, for the next ten years.

Yes, our small business of 5 employees now has to pay $2500 per year extra while a business of 100 employees pays the same. Fair, huh!

This. The headline makes it sound like this is an arbitrary increase, when there is a legitimate reason. It sucks to pay more but that is what these things cost.

Finally saw that movie last night. It kinda sucked compared to Casino Royale.

I don't have a problem with people who use lots of water to pay for lots of water.

The problem is that if utilites are expensive in one area, and cheap in the adjacent area, where do you think people and business are going to move to?

Speaking of conserving water - I have a high efficiency furnace and humidifier that produce about 20 gallons (70 liters) of water a day, that is currently being pumped upstairs and down a drain. Any suggestions on what to do with it that is cheap?

Space isn't an issue, but cost is. I'd like something that has automatic overflow detection so that if the barrel or tank or whatever gets full it will automatically drain without making a mess. It would be handy for landscaping (though I currently don't water and seem to have pretty drought tolerant landscaping, at least what survives).

Not everywhere. Water is running out in a lot of places. Fresh water is getting scarce, and not just in the desert Southwest.

hershmire 2009-01-17 04:42:39 PM
FTFA: Two new deep wells and a plant to treat the water would increase charges for residential customers using 4,100 gallons of water a month from $12.22 to $36.50, according to the PSC letter. That would be in addition to an estimated 208 percent increase in the public fire protection charge. (emphasis mine)

So, now they're paying 0.0089 per gallon instead of $0.0029? The horror! I kill for water at less than $.01/gallon.

My guess from the other side of the world is that they have enough water, but that it's a village with lots of farming around it and they now get the bill (quite literally) for the (over)usage of fertilizer.

Yuk. I have been on the receiving end of this nonsense before but it is usually done by putting flat fees on everyone's bill before they start calculating your usage. I could be gone for a month and still rack up a $45 water bill using no actual water.
Meanwhile the neighbors automated watering system is running daily in the rain and people are refilling their pools constantly.

And I'll bet a company of 10,000 is exempt b/c they are too "valuable to the community."

AAACCCCKKK It is only a precious commdity in dry areas, Northeast Ohio will NEVER run out of water unless global warming turns us to a desert climate. if you live in an area with regular rainfall, water is not a precious resource, It is a burden. $32/month isn't a bad price for self sustained water (not piped in from a big city)
