They don't have any oil, so we won't really be doing anything about this.

North Korea today threatened to "shatter" the conservative South Korean government in Seoul, as reports emerged that Pyongyang claims to have weaponised enough plutonium stocks to produce four or five nuclear bombs.

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

This was paid for by Clinton who gave them millions to go piss off until he was out of office. That or China wanted him to do it. Not sure which, but he is owned by China.

/Don't expect us to toughen standards of Chinese imports in this next administration either.

Well, they had to do something with it. Once it was downgraded from planet to 'dwarf planet,' you didn't expect them to just leave it sitting around, do you?

We have too. Ask Japan about it.

Don't you people worry. Obama has it all solved. All negotiations and diplomacy since the Korean war will be automatically solved by a magic wand post-Jan 20, 2009.

Their nuclear test fissiled because of too much Pu-240 - what you would get running a reactor too long for civilian use. I'd be curious if this stuff is any better. I'd also be curious if they've come even close to being able to mount a nuclear device on one of their missiles.

Mounting is one thing, being able to have "reach" is another. Iran proved that already with a "satellite" launch last year. It'd be foolish to say that Iran, Syria and N. Koreans aren't working together. They're all buddies with individual component responsibility with the aim of one goal: proliferation.

But...but...but...Bush. Aside from that, and the fact that oil is cheaper, no one except left wingnuts ever suggested the Iraq invasion was about oil. Saddam was pumping as much out of the ground as he could and selling it on the world market.

But North Korea's announcement sounds like they welcome the US having a Democrat in the White House again. They made out pretty well last time.

Yeah. The record profits that came five years after we went into Iraq were certainly caused by our presence there. The oil in Iraq was not "taken" by the US, and the profits were used to rebuild Iraq (even though it was not enough on its own.) The only thing keeping Iraqi oil off the market prior to the war was American-supported sanctions which we simply could have lifted if we wanted that oil on the market.

Are people really this dumb?

/wait, don't answer that

The rest of the world also didnt want them dealt with because their nuclear program was only for peaceful purposes, or so the official government line said.

TorqueToad: Are people really this dumb?

Well, lots of people in government were dumb enough to vote for the war in Iraq, so if they are true representatives of the people, then yes.

Its possible, oil platforms and all can kick off some serious light. That looks like the NOAA weather satellites of which there is free software using your soundcard and a scanner to decode into images like that.

Just outside Soeul there is a lot of shipping so I can see some serious light pollution from that.

Seriously, they got stuff now that make nukes look like a nice option.

North Korea's military/middle class and elite are completely underground. They have electricity down there, it's the peasants that do not.
