Extreme ironing has been around for over a decade. I can recall several threads about it.

Still, 173 feet is pretty deep for this kind of record.

These people are going for the "Most divers submerged at one time" record. Link (new window)

Sort of a silly record but a good way to drum up business I guess.

They're going to expect to get towels.

They're not alone.

If you haven't done underwater ironing in a long time would you be too rusty?

I would have gone with the "Ironic" tag.

There are a lot of suitcases full of clothing at the bottom of the Hudson River right now that could probably use a dryclean and a press.

Benjimin_Dover 2009-01-17 05:53:54 PM
So how do they keep the irons hot enough while submerged in water? Why is there not water bubbling away from the sole of the iron as it boils? Or are they really not ironing and only "play-ironing" and if so, wouldn't the record be bogus?

/just sayin

SpacePunk 2009-01-17 06:10:48 PM
Now, if they had a record for underwater dry cleaning, I'd be impressed.

Amen, brother. I'm with you on this one. The rule should be "no wrinkles" on anything they finish ironing, or automatic disqualification.

Find me a 200 foot water proof extension cord and I would be willing to try it.

So, should we ask Mike (the Gilboa Quarry owner) if we should all bring ironing boards and irons? Get to kill two birds with one stone that way!:)

/wishes he could go to Gilboa
//unfortunately diving funds have dried up in this household

There is a record for playing Monopoly so I'm not surprised.

But how is it really ironing? Is there a record for making tea underwater?

Somebody from FSU probably has the record for underwater basket weaving.

Guinness Records has become a joke. I hate how they have so many rules for certain records. The classic is roller coaster riding, where they're allowed 10 minute bathroom breaks every 4 hours or whatever. I say no. Get on the ride, pee in a bottle, poop in your pants, do whatever you have to do. THAT'S what a real record should be.

Or they could stop with records like that in the first place.
It is a retarded record, how about records of actual human accomplishment?
If your biggest accomplishment is that you rode a roller coaster for x hours you have failed at life.

I think they could simply use non-electric irons. Maybe some that run on acetylene like torches do.

simpsonfan 2009-01-17 10:26:54 PM
Records like this are bogus. Actually ironing something while on top of a mountain, okay. But underwater, no. The function of the iron would be too impaired.

They should disqualify any record that doesn't actually accomplish the task in question.

So the world's fastest lawnmower for example, should actually be capable of cutting grass, if at a lower speed, okay.

Guinness records is a joke.

This year I'm going for the world record for inventing mundane world records and wasting everybody's time with them.

World record for squeezing toothpaste out of tubes. World record for squeezing tomato paste out of tubes. World record for squeezing hand cream out of tubes. Can you see where this is going, Guinness?

Fibber. I've checked each and every one of those "Who cares?" and they all look EXACTLY alike. You had to have used copy and paste.
