Obama did not divulge just how he will overcome legal constraints, given the requirement of the post-Watergate Presidential Records Act of 1978 to keep a record of every White House communication.

If only the emails from his blackberry had to go through some kind of "server", which could keep a copy, instead of just wirelessly flying to the adressee's computer...

I'm guessing they'll work the "Blackberry is made by Canadians" angle to link Obama to socialism/being French.

Aren't records of communication on a server susceptible to being mysteriously "lost" ?

The problem is keeping track of the emails, the problem is the emails themselves. Because any written communication must be kept they try to limit the Presidents written communications, so they can cover his ass in case he says something "bad".

seems to me that this is the opposite of what was intended by the law. not to prevent the president from communicating, but just to keep a record of it.

i like that his mentality is "i will communicate, i just will keep in mind you'll be reading it".

NEWSFLASH!

[AP] January 21, 2009

-President Barack Hussein Obama's personal Blackberry device was
hacked by an underground hacker group. The information from
President Obama's Blackberry was then released on the internet.

In addition to the United States Nuclear Missile launch codes,
home addresses and phone numbers of all American citizens in
witness protection programs, and the phone numbers of various
Hollywood celebrity groupies, pictures were released as well.

Nor did he say how he would persuade his Secret Service protectors that the Blackberry does not pose a security risk, for instance if it is hacked over the air.

Interviewed by CNN Friday, Obama said the smartphone was among the tools that he would use to stay in touch with real Americans and avoid becoming trapped inside the presidential "bubble."

So does that mean he's gonna give out his cell number to everybody? Or maybe just his PIN number and sit on messenger all day long?

BARACK OBAMA: FIRST FURRY PRESIDENT

Kant Lavar [TotalFark] 2009-01-17 07:44:56 AM
Speaking as a military intelligence and security type, my biggest concern would be if he was using it for official business. BlackBerrys not only can be activated remotely, but emails between the device and the email server are sent as clear text. I don't know if there's a program, either first- or third-party, to encrypt BlackBerry emails, but if there is, I would still be concerned if Obama was using it to conduct official business.

Now, that being said, FOX News interviewed someone from the National Archives, who have responsibility to record Presidential messages under the Presidential Records Act. (I forget who it was, as the page is refusing to load, so I'm getting the URL from my browsing history.) At any rate, purely personal messages would not fall under the Act and would not need to be archived. So if Obama wants to keep it, and agrees to restrictions and cautions on how and where he uses it that all other federal employees have (i.e., can't have it around classified material or in sensitive areas), more power to him.

Blackberry = Internet porn in the bathroom... Bill hooked-up Obama with all the sneaky spots in the oval office you can rub one out without getting caught.

cirby 2009-01-17 07:59:12 AM
The big issue is that, since Obama is a definite and admitted BlackBerry addict, the "he won't send any classified messages" claim isn't very credible. I know a lot of BB nuts, and they have a bad tendency to send anything that comes into their heads. As POTUS, pretty much everything he does during the day can have security implications - he hasn't learned this yet, but he needs to.

Even if he manages to keep really tight information security by not ever managing to send any sensitive messages, the fact that he'll be carrying a single known device sending and receiving 24/7 is a real nightmare for most operational security folks. Best practice is to have several different devices, with unreleased or obscured addresses, and rotate among them in a random pattern (or use a device no more than a few hours and never use it again).

You can set up non-RIM BlackBerry servers for better security (with encryption thrown in), but it's a pain to access the wider BB system if you do.

rezin8 2009-01-17 08:16:03 AM
I can't believe that all of you think the main problem is what messages are sent from the blackberry.

The reason it's a security risk is because you can effectively triangulate someone's position using their cell phone signal. It was mandated that, in order to use E911, you had to be able to use a cellphone's signal to locate the user within a 300 foot radius. The secret service doesn't want you to know where the POTUS is. If someone is planning to do something bad to Obama, they could hack the cell network and find out where he is with pretty good accuracy in order to plan an attack.

Not only that, but Obama is a pretty savvy user, so he's most likely going to want the latest and greatest phone. One with GPS capabilities. And then, you'll be able to get even closer to him.

Could any blackberry user please explain why (s)he is using a blackberry ?

I've been doing some programming for blackberries lately and they are simply horrible. The user interface looks like shiat (the Windows 3.1 UI design team would be ashamed), the interaction with the device sucks ass (touch screen on the BB storm is very annoying, other devices have keys that are just too small), the device 'freezes' from time to time (shows an hourglass but remains unresponsive for 10-20 seconds), the build quality is crap (gaps around connectors, cheap plastic feel), developing software for them is hell (non-descriptive error messages, non-standard file formats, and general weirdness).

Of all the phone's I've used and developed for (and that's a *lot*) these are simply the very worst devices I've ever encountered. So: please explain to me, WHY ?

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2009-01-17 08:56:46 AM

If the Secret Service reacts by forcing end to end encryption on an industry for security, Obama will have done something good for the world.

But I don't think that will happen.
