From TFA:

With Fork In the Road, Young seems to be exploring three things - dirty blues, direct lyrics, and his LincVolt electric car project. That all sounds well and good until you hear the opening lyrics of the title track.

"Got a pot belly," Young sings, "It's not too big / Gets in my way / When I'm driving my rig."

Oh my God.

Neil's had plenty of lyrical clunkers in his career ("Welfare mothers/make better lovers"), but, Jesus, Neil.

Do you think he's just hit the point where he's so old now that he thinks he can just basically say stuff and nobody will care?

Ya know, like old people in the nursing home. Walk by, they scream, "I like noodles!", and everyone is like, "Aw, how cute".

There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

that?

Well, that's a metaphor.
It's kind of ham-fisted metaphor that oversimplifies the class struggle in society, but it's a metaphor nonetheless.

I always thought of it as a metaphor that's too silly to be taken seriously. I mean, yeah, he had something serious to say, I'm sure, but this stuff has to work at the surface level as well as the deeper level.

"Welfare Mothers" was a great song. It's only offensive if you don't recognize the sarcasm. I always thought that "Hard to believe that love is free now" was an excellent line.

Plus, I don't think there's anything wrong with lyrics about his belly. Most Americans, myself included, can probably relate. But what worries me is all the complaints about the lack of melody.

I checked out "Fork in the Road" on Youtube. I find it quite listenable and the lyrics are pretty funny.

I'll look forward to hearing more.

Yeah, Young. Has some interesting songs.

But this whole media- and fan-inflamed version of Young as a punk-infused folkster or whatever, which he informed by his whole Live Rust-Dead Rust Never Sleeps stunt, is just crap.

Young as punk rocker. Heh. Young as American/folk punk rocker is even a bigger laugh.

Whoops, I meant, Canadian/folk punk rocker. Now it makes sense.

I've actually read somewhere that it wasn't really meant to be a metaphor. More of just "Well, what if trees behaved like people?" than anything else. Can't remember where I read that though, so consider it pulled out of my ass.

I'm pretty sure that was the case in 1963. Some of us admire him for it, though that doesn't always translate into an album sale.

To me it's hard not to see The Trees as an allegory, but you're right he did say that the trees is pretty much nonsense

And Niel Peart is a really, really ham handed lyricist. But Ayn Rand was just about as bad as a writer, so it works out.

Headline would have been much, much funnier if subby had picked an old band who also released a recent crappy album, instead of Rush. Rush's last album was quite good.

GurneyHalleck [TotalFark] 2009-01-16 05:26:27 PM
As a lifelong Rush fan, I agree with the subby, at least in the case of Snakes and Arrows, which is the worst album they've ever produced. I don't understand why anyone thinks it has any merits beyond making the boys a bundle of money that's well deserved for most everything else they've produced. And as far as the snide remarks about Peart's lyrics--he was a fantastic poet up until about Power Windows, and then he started to phone it in after that. The lyrics from S&A are some of the stupidest word combinations I've ever seen him squeeze out. Ayn Rand still sucks, though.

And as far as Neil goes--he's always been one of those artists who comes out with a legendary album one year and then a stupid one the next year. He's got at least a couple more gems in him before he passes on, but it doesn't look like this will be one of them.

Great as he is, I absolutely believe Neil Young can still dump a turd on the musical world. His career is full of such ups and downs.

But fark the caption in the article for claiming Greendale was one of them. I loved that record!

Yeah, I remember from the last Neil thread. You're the moran who wishes he would only play his its from the '70s.

Greendale was an incredible concert. I hadn't heard any of the new (at the time) songs and didn't even know he was going play it all the way through.

I was thoroughly blown away. After, he came out and played about 45 minutes of old music.

You complained "Played two hits at the end as an afterthought."

I don't know what show you went to or if you left early.

Here was the "afterthought" I saw and heard though:

Hey Hey, My My
Like A Hurricane
Powderfinger
Sedan Delivery
Roll Another Number
Rockin' In The Free World

I mean farking Powderfinger? Holy shiat...
