As skeptical as I am of Obama, I find this to be very cool and optimistic news. They'll never be as powerful as they were with Jerry, but Phil's still keeping that flame burning. Maybe they can pull some Utopian vision in through the vortex for Obama.

I'm sure they'll do an "Eyes" in there somewhere, along with "U.S. Blues," but I think they should try to work a "Dark Star> St. Stephen> The Eleven> Lovelight" jam in there at least, just to blow some minds. "The Wheel" would be fitting and cool. "Hell in a Bucket" would probably be the most fitting of all.

I thought this was going to be a story about the dead kennedys and was totally let down by the fact it was about hippies. I could have fully supported Obama is he had the dead kennedys playing the inaugural ball.

Are they going on before or after the puppet show?

Crafty headline, subby.

Sadly though, my musical heroes are all for the other side.

Aw, I read the headline and thought he had asked for the Dead Kennedys to play.

Well,
Thousands of them voted for him, so I guess that's fair.

Oh come on, man. Haven't we gotten beyond placating these fu*king ancient hippies already? We really still have to make sure they're content? What's next, the reunited Airplane, moving the inauguration to Berkeley?

"Yay, Obama must agree with our dusty, bitter, 40-year-old political beliefs - he hired the Dead! Our world may have vanished decades ago but nobody told us!!!" Ugh...

Before the trolls come here and say it, I will......One hour? so, that's like what, one song?

I vote for the classic "Scarlet>Fire" then do an "Eyes>Slipknot>Franklin" set......that would fill most of the hour. Then polish it off with "Touch of Grey".

/why aren't they coming to Atlanta?
//who do they think they are? Phish?

Or Obama likes the dead and wants them to play.

Indeed, recall that the name of the post-Jerry band before Phil signed back up was "The Other Ones".

Abraham and Martin, then?

This is pretty cool news.

Maybe there's no political motive to it. Maybe Obama just likes the Dead.

"Wave that flag
Wave it wide and high"

But, I've got to admit (The Other Ones aside), the headline works better if Obama was inviting the Dead Kennedys to the inauguration.

You're skeptical of Obama, but you're optimistic that he's getting the former members of the Dead together for the inauguration?

Remember, Ann Coulter is a self-purported deadhead too and probably attended many more shows than Obama.

And the surviving members have made no secret of which candidate they liked either, so this isn't really surprising. Garcia really wouldn't have given a shiat about any politicians.

And just remember what Garcia once said: "We always fark up the big ones" (meaning the big concerts (Woodstock, the Egypt pyramid shows). Just think how bad they're going to play next week.

/will watch anyway

ComicBookGuy 2009-01-16 11:24:10 PM
I still haven't decided if I'm going to see any of the spring shows. I'd probably only go to D.C.'s, and maybe Philly.

Who cares? He was the one they should have killed instead of the other 2.

That show at Penn state was actually very good. I was surprised. Once that washed up Allman douchebag was finished, the Dead came out and (IMHO) sounded better than they have since about 91 or so.

In other news, Obama's first act after inauguration will be to legalize pot so that everyone can "really groove on" the music

any deadheads here?

what do you guys [or gals] think of "Live Dead" that live album from the late 60's [or early 70's? i forget which] ??
