Better be good. Can't remember the last Mode cd I bought, but it was shiat. Exciter?
Song of Faith and Devotion however was the dogs bollocks.

The most recent one (the one after Exciter) is really good - much groovier and more electronic than their '90s stuff. Hopefully the new one will be in the same vein.

Yeah, I loved their last album, Playing the Angel. I would definitely recommend it. I'm looking forward to the newest one.

Agreed.
Halo is one of my favorite songs.

I was going to see them in Chicago during Touring the Angel, but they canceled.
/prays to Personal Jesus for Omaha or Chicago tour

Ahhh but how many songs did Dave write?

And how many will feature Martin oversinging about senses and breathing and sinning? Poor guy's gotta bring it down a notch.

Last album could have REALLY done without Macro, Marty.

AufDerFlucht76 2009-01-16 01:59:08 PM
Well, I'm looking extremely forward to it. Now, I hope they tour somewhere close to where I live. Oh, and I joined the street team, which asked for my home address and I'm hoping they'll send me neat stuff in the mail.

Exciter was pretty good, actually. I hated it when I first listened to it, but after you listed to it a few more times, it starts sounding good.

"Suffer Well" was the first song that Dave wrote for DM, everything else was done by Martin and he does a good job.

Sound doesn't travel well in space, though.

Awesome. Playing the Angel really brought them back from obscurity. Looking forward to it.

Oddly enough, "Suffer Well" is my favorite song from that album. Although IIRC he only wrote the lyrics; the music was written by a member of his solo touring band.

Dave penned two other songs on Angel: Sometimes and Nothing's Impossible.

He's supposed to have at least another three on the new one (or at least that seems to be the arrangement that keeps Dave in the group....).

No arguments here. That and "I Want it All" - thankfully they're right next to each other so I can skip them at the same time.

Here's hoping that we can get a better mastering job on the next album, as well. PTA's mastering was an abomination.

Jeez, am I the only one who didn't like Playing the Angel? Exciter was good if you were looking for something soft and downtempo, but I personally feel that the last TRUE Depeche Mode album was Ultra.

Note: "I Want it All" and "Nothing's Impossible". "Sometimes" is by Martin and is on Black Celebration. It's unfairly maligned by fans in my opinion.

I stopped listening to Depeche Mode after Violator, and what little I heard from them didn't make me miss my younger days. However, I came across Playing the Angel and it was awesome. Probably my favorite album of theirs, and that's saying something.

Gahan's solo work is worth a listen. Not reinventing the wheel, but well worth downloading purchasing.

Crap! I forgot the title of that song...he repeats the word "sometimes" a lot, and I got it confused for the real title, "I want it all."

BTW, the real song "Sometimes" on BC is perfectly craptastic.

Yep... PTA had some of the worst mastering I have ever heard, and I was a mastering engineer in the 90s...

Wonder who is mixing it? I didn't think much of the mixing on PTA either - especially the vocals (Lillian). Actually, I haven't really felt that the sound and production has been up to spec since Ultra, but like a battered wife, I keep buying every release, hoping that somehow the album will be as good as SOFAD or Violator, or even Ultra. So far, IMHO, I haven't had much luck :-)

/check out the surround remasters of the older albums though - the PCM stereo encoded versions on the DVD are quite good in comparison to the normal releases.
//I really hope Steve Fitzmaurice doesn't mix the new one
///REALLY

interface2x 2009-01-16 06:07:48 PM
I've heard that the SACD and Vinyl versions of PTA had good mastering, but I've had trouble finding a rip as I don't have the hardware to play either.

paulseta [TotalFark] 2009-01-16 06:21:36 PM
I will answer my own question on who is mixing the new one - apparently a chap named Tony Hoffer, who mixed Gahan's Hourglass and Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree. Should be an improvement :-)

Few bands of any genre will come close to topping this album. One of the best records of the 90's for sure.

/Converge's cover of "Clean" is really, ridiculously good.

First CD I ever bought, though "Disintegration" was a close second.

I hope they do a decent sized tour. I haven't seen them since they were touring SOFAD.

Considering they released their best work in the 1990s, I think you've failed.
