Thanks subby. Love this song, and I didn't know there was an Emmylou Harris cover out there until now, and it's a good one. Though it did get passed around a lot; seems everyone's done it.

Quite welcome... and here's a great version by the composer of the song himself:

Fark can always use more Townes Van Zandt. A nice change from the usual "more cowbell."

Hmmm... now that I think of it, TVZ with more cowbell -- that right there, that's a weapon of mass dysfunction.

Sweet. I love her. Finally saw her perform last summer in SF at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival.

I like it. Never heard it before.

There's a great Townes van Zandt recording of this song where he starts out telling a story about how he got pulled over for speeding. The cops are looking at him suspiciously and he's sweating because he's got an expired license. Somehow what he does for a living comes up, and one cop asks him if he's "ever written anything I might have heard." He tells him about this song and the cop, incredulously, tells him that him and his partner use Poncho and Lefty as their callsigns. The other cop nods. (This is obviously after Willie made it a hit.) So he gets off with a warning. Pretty pedestrian story, but the way Townes tells it is really quite charming.

Wish I had a link but it was on a mix CD a friend gave me, and I have no idea where she got it.

The version on Live At The Old Quarter has a different joke. Townes was notorious for telling really dumb jokes. He'd play some remarkable song, usually one that would absolutely break your heart, and then go straight into telling some goofy joke.

Live At The Old Quarter is one I highly recommend, by the way. For whatever that's worth...

Didn't Townes die the way a singer-songwriter should? Chirrhosis?

Since we're sharing. My favorite Townes Song, covered by Guy Clark.

TVZ was an incredible songwriter. I was looking for the cover of "Marie" by Willie Nelson, which is a thoroughly depressing song, but no luck.

I've always thought she was one of the most attractive women in music. Whatever it is she did with her hair when it went gray worked really well (same with Helen Mirren).

Nice. But Willie and Merle's version is the best one.

I worked with Emmy Lou Harris when I was a camera assistant on Austin City Limits.

Met a lot of performers there, but she is by far the nicest person in the business.

Funny story about her hair that became a part of her show - - she had her hair pinned up under a cowgirl hat, and then after two songs, she took the hat off and let it down. All this beautiful silver and black hair came tumbling down her shoulders.

"Do you like it?" she asked the audience. "I dye it this color."

Beautiful, talented, AND funny. What a wonderful woman.

Man to have Albert Lee AND Rodney Crowell in your band... it's like bacon in your recipe, it would make anything good.

See that movie about Townes. Beautiful and sad.

Thanks subby! Emmylou is by far a favorite of mine. I have never had the pleasure to see her in concert, but will someday soon.

Nice, but my fave is still the Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard version.

She went gray years ago...and somehow it works. Pretty woman, and although I kind of hate country music, she's one of the few that does it justice.

I now will go listen to Patsy Cline = good country music

I came here to mention that, but had no intention of posting a link. Kudos to you.

Hot then; hoter now. She's one of those women who actually gets better with age.

She was great with Gram. And great with Neil Young. And great alone. One of the greatest voices in real country music.

/Thanks for the song, submitter
//Townes has to be my favorite songwriter.

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2009-01-16 11:36:49 AM
Only thing about Emmylou is she has that weird chin business going on where it looks like she had a bit of work done and they pulled things a wee bit too tight. Completely made up for by her apparent fanaticism for baseball (see backstage scenes in Down From The Mountain) of course... really, she's the bee's knees.

binkyman 2009-01-16 11:43:02 AM
too bad she's a peta tard.

Blasphemer ! The best version is on Live at the Old Quarter.
"What's white & crawls up your leg ? Uncle Ben's Perverted Rice! "
"Rest rooms Upstay-ers. Pinball Upstay-ers..." - loved that guys accent.
EmmyLou is still the sexiest woman in country music.
Townes died from a heart attack on New Years Day 1997.
One of America's greatest songwriters bar none.

MANY years ago I dated a woman almost as attractive who sang better; what a combo.

After she went grey, Harris was asked why she didnt dye it back to brown. Her answer was that she had earned EVERY GREY HAIR and was going to hide or change them for anyone. Cool answer.

'Boulder to Birmingham' FTW.

See that movie about Townes. Beautiful and sad.

And that. Here's the Be Here To Love Me trailer.

I count myself lucky -- the times I saw Townes play, it was the "good" Townes, not the falling-off-his-stool drunk Townes.

Love me some EmmyLou. Add Knopfer's guitar and her voice and you have a winnging combination.

Emmylou Harris has always been awesome, and she does look better than ever.

Another cool thing about that Willie and Merle video is how they put Townes Van Zandt in it.

Came in here to say the exact same thing. Those two were meant for each other. Damn shame. Grievous Angels is one of my favorite songs and she did a great cover with Ryan Adams in tribute to Gram.

She's one of the most beautiful women, evah, IMHO.

And, "This is Us" with Mark Knopfler puts her with one of my personal guitar gods. It's outstanding.

Her harmonies are beautiful, also. Check out her doing "The River's Gonna Run" with Sam Bush.
