i love boehner's faux-shock. if he's really surprised that they're going down a keynesian path to recovery, he must have been living under a rock for months.

burndtdan 2009-01-15 05:23:09 PM
to add: especially after boehner supported and voted for the bailout, which was more or less the same thing.

but that was giving money to rich people. maybe he's just shocked that they're going to try and spur the economy for people who aren't rich.

No, really guys. Cash is king. You *really* want to be holding a lot of dollars right about now.

Is it possible for the Democrats to do anything WORSE to the economy than the Republicans have done? If, as I suspect, the answer is "probably not," then it would behoove the butthurt 27%ers to go away until someone calls for them.

It's a clear conflict of interest for Nancy. She'll be steering taxpayer money into a business she owns a stake in. You understand that's wrong, correct?

You think it's okay to steer public money into your own pockets? There's laws that are at least being bent, if not broken and it's not a very popular thing to do. That's the public trust we're talking about.

GaryPDX [TotalFark] 2009-01-15 07:12:24 PM
whidbey: Well, I TRUST that Pickens is one of the most innovative private sector entrepreneurs in the field of green technology and I see this as a needed step to invest in ideas like his. So what's the problem, other than the fact you don't like Democrats?

Well, what it looks like to me is trading one energy tyrant for another. However, I have a connection to a business that will likely be doing NG conversions on vehicles. Natural gas is big up here. I like wind energy but I loathe centralized distribution by utility companies. The products are on the shelf for wind DC power systems and people could make changes on their own.

nice to finally have you on board. Strange, I didn't see you complaining during the last 7 years when the government was turning over every possible cent to Dick Cheney's bosses in Halliburton, not to mention Enron controlling our nation's energy policy.

What happened to you buddy?

A Republican shocked at 'borrow and spend'? WTF?

The last 3 Republicans in the White House flogged the HELL out of deficit spending. Ok, let's be fair - Clinton did too. And you know Obama will. Our economy and government have shifted into it, and we can't meet a budget if we don't.

It's just what we do.

You may be trading one energy tyrant for another, but at least he's one of your energy tyrants, that theoretically you shouldn't have to dominate with military power. He's a cheaper and more predictable tyrant, in any event.

As far as local generation, I entirely agree with you (perhaps a first). While upgrading the grid is important (for flow in both directions), the right answer for the bulk of energy production is local energy production, which removes some of the loss due to transmission inefficiency.

Personally, I get 100% of my power from regionally-generated wind, and I'll be a net-producer inside of 8 months. Timing is good- get in while the generation resources are available and cheap.

Economic health is based on the amount of money that is in flow. Hoarding the money doesn't help the economy, which is one reason why the first half of the bail out money failed. Banks got the money and did nothing with it. Congress decided that sending money directly to corporations would be the way to save the economy, well, apparently, that was a bad idea. How about, instead, the government send each person over the age of 18 a check for $50,000 and tell them to spend it and hand over all receipts to the government to prove that it was spent. Save your paychecks, spend the $50k. Any money left over after 12 months is returned to the government. The government also puts in a wage freeze and a firing freeze as well as a price ceiling (prices can't go up, but they can go down). There is also a price tax freeze. Let the citizens vote, using that money, on which companies stay afloat, and which ones die. The deals the businesses would be offering to get you spend your money with them would be incredible.

Now, their, of course, are those who wouldn't need that money, and they, naturally, wouldn't get that money. Steve Jobs, for example, has enough money that he won't need a $50k check to stimulate the economy. Paris Hilton, Brad Pitt, the President and all of Congress would do without, since they make more money than the average citizen does. Base who gets a $50k check on tax returns. Pay taxes, make below $150k/year, get a check.

/couldn't do any worse than the current Bailout plan

9% of the annual budget goes to pay interest on the national debt. That will be going up.
