A few months ago I won an Internet radio (^) from a local radio station. I have it in the downstairs bathroom and listen to it while showering. I have grown to love listening to various radio stations around the world. There are some seriously good stations out there and I look forward to giving this station a listen.

There's so much more out there, folks. Don't get trapped into listening what corporate radio shoves down your throat (or eardrums, as it were).

I though "independent" in terms of music meant free from major labels and major label distribution.

This article makes it sound like it's some sort of revolutionary concept to play Sinatra and Vicious in the same set.

I originally submitted this with the headline "The best radio station in the U.S. refuses..." but some admin decided to play editor. Had they left it alone, there would have been no confusion.

Radio station: "We're not going to play that corporate radio game! We're gonna stick it to 'the man' and go online only!"

Me: "Not making enough money, huh?"

Radio station: "Shut up!"

I believe in this context it means independent of corporate oversight into your playlist, play whatever the hell you like, even if that's Sinatra and Sid Vicious in the same set.

So they go online only and then streaming server gets crushed?

Could just be the fishing line we use as a connection here at work though.

God that station sucked. Badly.

And on top of that they played to the pretentious, self-important, faux-revolutionary "indie" culture.

"Indie" is a code word for "we like it because it's not good".

Yes, well, not everyone has the good taste to buy music because they think the girl on the CD is hot, some people actually listen to it instead.

Okay, that explains it I guess. I think the words "independent" and "indie" are too commonly used in music today.

I'm trying to browse the site to see some playlists, but it seems a bit slow.

I'm listening now, and it's AWESOME! Finally, a station that isn't afraid to say F-you to the mainstream and play music that actually takes talent to make.

12XU!

From what I've heard about the royalties internet radio stations play vs. FM radio, they're not going to be making more money by moving to the web.

A couple of years ago my favorite band gave me a copy of their CD which was about to be released. I was obviously lusting at the girl on the cover and one guy said "Yeah, that's my wife."

Me: "Well, who's ready for more wine?"

That's a little harsh. Does VH-1 play Spoon?

No, but they are "adult contemporary". Or another way of putting it, XRT is kind of like the NPR of Rock, in not a good way.

BTW Used to love XRT, when it was the only game in town other than the College rock stations.

actually from what I heard from a friend in an independant station is that they did change the way they count audiance and it does favor the Corporate stations.

Wizzin 2009-01-15 05:08:18 PM
Most radio stations are worse than the tv stations. I hop in the car, turn on the radio and drive halfway across town to my destination and hear nothing but commercials the entire time. I don't even bother with the radio anymore.

MentalMoment 2009-01-15 05:14:31 PM
The station was built to [fark] with KROQ (Infinity) by people from KISS-FM (Clear Channel). (^)

103.1 was good once. Used to listen to Dicky Barrett on the morning commute. But they were never an "independent" station.

Well at least we still have KROQ, which is playing brand new tunes from Sublime, Offspring, and Nirvana!

/or are these just the same tunes they've been playing for 15 years now?

Ha, Rich F. is a TFarker, that is hilarious. The Bay used to be one of my favorite morning radio stations (primarily because you guys played music), but I've all but stopped listening ever since you guys added that Bob and Tom crap. On the plus side, it did lead me to discover 103.1, which is excellent.

Infernal Wedgie 2009-01-15 05:46:23 PM
This news has worsened my commute immensely.

/was listening to 103.1FM on the drive to work
//will be listening to AM640 on the drive home out of spite
///they're all Clear Channel anyway

StevieWonder_DrivingInstructor 2009-01-15 05:50:19 PM
Indie 103.1 always kind of pissed me off, because of their damn smugness. Their playlist waffled between awesome and dogshiat. But, yeah, generally better than "same-old snoozefest" of KROQ.

Still prefer FM 94.9 (new window) in San Diego, though.

Gangway Fathead 2009-01-15 05:56:45 PM
Indie 103 was a good radio station.

Bash it all you want, it was a good radio station.

I do think the word "indie" sucks (in both music and especially movies) but the station played a nice mix of music that old fogies like myself could enjoy and stuff by whippersnappers that was worth checking out.

Plus every now and again, Jonsey would play Benny Hill.

Jonesy was also probably the only DJ on radio playing real glam rock. So that was a good thing.

Feh.
