Meanwhile, Burris is on the phone right now with the people who are in charge of his "granite resume":

Guess Blago and Obama sure showed him.

I just imagined a Roland Burris filibuster. The leadership could come up to him and say: "Rollie, there's this bill before the floor to allow mining companies to drop their slag into pregnant women's fallopian tubes. We think that it sucks, but we don't have the votes to force cloture [or whatever the hell sparks an actual filibuster]. Get behind the podium and talk about yourself."

He could probably stall until the next election cycle.

// Roland Burris, the junior senator from the State of Illinois, REALLY likes to talk about Roland Burris, the junior senator from the State of Illinois.

Harry Reid makes me so angry. I met him about 10 years ago and thought he was the future of American politics, but all he does now is make vague threats on "Meet the Press" and then fold like a card table for no apparent reason.

I keep thinking he must have some master plan to save the country that will reveal itself any day now... yep, any day now... Please stop making me look like a jackass for defending you all this time, Harry.

Not making an issue of it in the first place might have been a better strategy. It's wise not to pick fights you aren't sure of winning unless you're willing to look ineffective or foolish.

The writing was on the wall. Blago made the appointment knowing full well that no one wanted him to do anything. Burris, unless he's a complete moron, had to know that his nomination would be extremely suspect and would be treated differently based upon the circumstances. It was a dick move by Blago, and a stupid move by Burris. Whether or not the appointment was done by the rules is not the issue.

AntiNerd: I haven't been following this story that much. Is there anything really bad about Burris other than how he we appointed by a slimeball?

Yes, when he was Illinois Attorney General he tried to get an innocent man (Rolando Cruz) executed. He's been rejected by the voters of Illinois three times for governor or senator. He hasn't held public office since his disastrous time as attorney general in the '90s. He sucks. His appointment is an embarassment to everyone from this state. If the Republicans run Mark Kirk against him in 2010 he'll lose by a landslide.

A Dark Evil Omen 2009-01-15 03:50:24 PM
Speaking as someone who strongly supports Obama, come on. Sure, maybe Burris' hands are clean, but maybe not, and it would be better, as the phrase goes, to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. I'm sure there's a dozen qualified people who would love that seat and aren't associated with Blagojevich.

Give up on Blago now rather than hoping against hope for the next year or s. It'll save you some stresss and probably some hair. The Sun-Times reported this week that the feds have his dealmaking on videotape as well as audiotape. Couple that with the fact that Rezko is singing and things look REALLY bleak for the boy governor. Plus, he's like a cartoon when he has a press conference "I'm impeached? What? Just look at those disabled people I helped back there!"

I don't think DH was defending Blago there, so much as saying that denying the Burris appointment had no legal grounds. Which is true.

But yeah...Rod's a giant douche, and everyone knows it. Except Rod.

Reid should've exersized every legal option he had for preventing this douche from becoming a Senator. A governor who has been arrested and indicted for trying to sell a senate seat automatically casts doubt on the person who accepts said senate seat. And frankly speaks volumes about Burris' character, or lack of it.

So now that he is in. Can we please impeach him on grounds on he was not approved by the people of IL? Hell if we got laws in book from the 1900s lets use those if we need to. I just want this douche out and a real selection made. Also I vote more for the left and I would vote republican just to not have this guy in. I would even vote Jesse(sp) Jackson Jr over this guy if I had to.

I agree with everything you said in spirt, but obviously senators can be appointed without voter's approval. Hopefully he will lose big in 2010, and he can carve a big "FAIL" on his farking tombstone.

Compare this with how the GOP handles scandals, they march lockstep to defend their colleagues regardless of the scandal and how much evidence is presented up until the last possible moment. And that's why you have the criminals keeping their mouth shut and avoiding additional embarrassment to the party. When Patrick Fitzgerald was going after Scooter Libby the GOP called the conservative prosecutor overzealous, out-of-control and worse.

The Dems operate completely opposite, at the first hint of scandal they'll throw the guy overboard to make non-lasting meaningless political points with the MSM, pundits and the republicans. The isolated criminal, decides he's going to show the same amount of loyalty to his former party members that they shown to him. Blago had nothing to lose by appointing anybody.

Now Reid didn't have to be as amoral as the GOP, but could have acknowledge the moral, legal and practical complexities of the situation and vowed to make sure the senator who would be appointed is clean.
