Good. Maybe a few kids will learn something about the election process.

Okay, kids. Open your textbooks to page 251. Sally, would you please read the opening passage from Great Expectations?

[Sally reads]

Excellent. So what would Obama say about this opening? Yeah. I think there are too many white people in this book, too.

It's a sad day in Louisiana when a black man becomes president.

It's nice to know the ACLU is telling school districts how to manage internal discipline issues along with dictating curriculum.

cartersdad 2009-01-15 12:36:58 PM
I am wondering if the students can say that, "They will Pray for our president."

Probably not. The word "express" must be used in a non-offensive manner.

More like warning school districts not to impermissibly infringe upon the students' First Amendment rights under the false guise of "internal discipline."

When you have public schools saying students can't talk about an election, yeah the ACLU will get its hackles up and rightfully so

sepuku2: It's nice to know the ACLU is telling school districts how to manage internal discipline issues along with dictating curriculum. still looking out for those without the means to look out for themselves.

Remember that girl who was taken to task by her teacher for wearing a McCain shirt (or was it Obama? I get them confused) to class? I don't have a link, but this was real harassment (I think the child in question was under 10) - made to stand up before the class and tell them why McC/O was the worst thing America could do. The ACLU would have issued the same press release to the schools, had they known what Wentzes lurked therein.

Fun with the ACUL:

1.Make giant ugly-ass signs advocating the abolition of the 1st amendment with clashing color that violate city ordinances, then get a citation for them.

2.Call up the ACLU and say your constitutional rights are being infringed.

3.Tell them what your signs say

4. Laugh at their confusion.

The students and teachers and administrations certainly have first amendment freedoms, but not to be disruptive and jerks about it.

I just find it difficult to believe that the "school administration" is enforcing a policy of 'no discussion of politics' or 'let's not celebrate the new president', when they celebrate the presidents on holidays every farking year.

More likely, the teacher was just trying to keep the students focused on the work in the classroom and trying to prevent disruptions. Someone got their nose out of joint. There must be more to this story than reported. There ususally is.

Why the ACLU needed to get involved seems to be a bit extreme.

I am not against first amendment freedoms, just pointing out that there are instances that the ACLU sticks its nose in to too many places.

In an open letter sent to school superintendents this week, ACLU of Louisiana executive director Marjorie Esman expressed concern that students in some Louisiana communities were punished for voicing support for Obama's victory in the November election.

Let's try to remember that this is Louisiana we're talking about. There are some areas that seem to be semi-comfortable inching into the 1940s.

/Deep South? Nothing really all that deep there

Hell I hope not only the ALCU but every American has a say in what a school districts does. Plus isn't an educational institute where we teach kids to express their ideas and thoughts? Why minimize this because a darkie is president.

DarnoKonrad: Well yea, that would be bullshiat.

I strongly suspect those statements are misleading. It seems more likely that some students were warned because they were overly celebratory, etc, during school time. Voicing support is fine. Disrupting a public school is not.

Example - If I jump up in down in the classroom waving my arms, in the middle of class time, screaming my head off about how Allah is great, and the teacher tells me to sit down and be quiet, am I being punished for being Muslim? Are my rights being violated?

Having grown up in LA and being myself a product of a Louisiana public education... I'd say the school system needs as much intervention as possible, by the ACLU or anyone else who gives a flying fark.

That armpit of the US needs to be flushed. The only good thing about LA is bourbon st and the liberal gun laws.

I assume that what the ACLU means is that kids who are a part of white supremacist organizations, the Klan, Michael Savage's fan club, etc., should be permitted, nay, encouraged to discuss publicly the impending doom of America now that we've elected a darkie to be our President.

I mean, right? The ACLU is fighting for the kids' right to engage in UNPOPULAR speech, right?

/looky, snowballs in hell

Angel of Death: I can be virtually certain that that person is an idiot.

Probably not 100%, but yes that is a very very good litmus test for ones proclivity to sheer stupidity.

A simple, "What's your specific problem with the ALCU" is usually met with dumbfounded silence or bizarre proclamations of defending abortionists.
