If they want to do something like that and not be hassled by the cops, they need to move to a country with a constitution that guarantees equal protection under the law.

Holy Fark, that is absolute weapons-grade stupid right there. Equal protection under the law implies that you're in court. These guys will have nothing illegal done to them. But everything they ever do that's illegal - even slightly - will be found and prosecuted to the fullest extent. And the cops will always have to use force to bring them in.

There's ALOT you can do within the bounds of the law. Even more you can do when you ARE the law.

FTFAthe cover shot, which shows officer Hite lying wounded on the ground, is a Daily Star news photo used without permission

Why in hell would they print such a graphic picture in a public newspaper?

Police outrage should be directed at the Star for sensationalizing this officers murder just to sell newspapers.

Sounds like a great publicity stunt. The band left themselves a wimp out by using the picture without permission. Now they can pull the cover and claim that the Daily Star forced them to under threat of a lawsuit.

A lawsuit worth even more publicity, that is.

Benevolent Misanthrope: These guys will have nothing illegal done to them.

Correction: nothing illegal ever done to these guys will be investigated, nor will the perpetrators be prosecuted.

/The Blue Wall: it doesn't matter if it's illegal, so long as you're not caught.

You know, I was sitting around today thinking "Hmm, wonder why I don't listen to punk anymore."

Now I see why. I guess I grew past the stage where I thought plastering the image of someone dying all over the place to be "shocking" and "punk as fark" was cool.

Of course, with enough momentum, that band's cover could be worth as much as this one someday.

Ah, now I seem to remember why I stopped hanging out with kids like these. I'm past the whole "shock" thing. Wanna shock me motherfarker, write a good song, that's shock-value right there.

Crap, I was supposed to quote jake_lex with my previous comment.

I remember when I was in highschool, a guy who used to be in my class was runover by a car while riding his autoped. He was thrown into the air and fell in a mangled position. The guy was known as the "brown-nazi", because he was well..."brown" and he used to draw swaztikas on his shiat. Anyways, seeing as a snowflake like that had great friends, his friends filmed and took pictures of his final moments gasping for air and mouthing "help". They send a picture to the local paper, the next day everyone in school saw their classmate bend in half awkardly with a frozen look of panic on his face.

The only thing that went on in my mind was "That's great journalism right here, I wonder how the family felt when they received the paper this morning".

Freedom of speech. While in bad taste not illegal. I do hope someone steals all their equipment and they have to call the police and file a report.

I should be surprised, but I'm not. This is an example of common behavior and thought process in Tucson.

Came to say this. It's not like punks haven't suggested using cops as fertilizer before.

I just listened to a sample, and they are pretty horrid. Pop punk garbage. Nothing to see here, folks.

dr_mabuse 2009-01-15 12:34:12 PM
In the early 1980s the Crucifarks had a release (or perhaps it was a poster advertising a show) with a photo of a downed police officer on it, and the local news (in Lansing, Michigan) had a field day with it. Then, in 1992 they used a similar photo on their cd reissue, which led to a lawsuit...

dead cops are a sub-genre in the dead authority figures tradition of punk bands...

Farkomatic 2009-01-15 12:36:04 PM
While I fully support any band's right to freedom of speech, I think this is retarded.

Many "original" bands seem to have truly offending names and this just shows the level of offensiveness they will rise to.

But they start biatching and whining when there are not many clubs in the area willing to hire them. Who can advertise to the public what they are offering?

Kareeshus 2009-01-15 12:44:05 PM
But cops use pictures of dead people all the time for their Anti-Drink Driving and Anti-Gang programs. I'd say the band just followed the example of police that it's OK to use photographs of the dead & dying for their own publications.

FTA:

The singer also said he does not apologize to anyone it may have offended.

That would include the police.

Not that it changes the fundamental free speech issues at play here, but people I know in this town - several of them the kind of people that don't need much excuse to hold a grudge against an officer of the law - dealt with this particular cop and thought he was a pretty decent guy.

/played in Tucson punk band
//not this one

Most cops are pretty decent guys. But it's not like the band's point was "we hate this particular officer who got killed".

As Tucson Police Capt. Clayton Kidd asked in the Daily Star, "What part of an officer giving his life is humorous? I ask for the community's support in recognizing this is an absolute disgrace to Officer Hite, who gave his life defending out community. While they may have certain beliefs that they want to express, the venue in which they expressed it is disgusting and I'm outraged."

I believe this is what's known in the profession as a "Letter of Marque".
