I don't know that Ryan Adams' core audience consists of prepubescent girls, subby. You could at least try to be a little accurate in concocting a snarky headline demonstrating the vast superiority of your musical tastes and how woefully tiresome you find such common fare.

Are you supposing that 'Farker' and 'self respecting' are NOT mutually exclusive terms?

ryan adams is a total sellout who would do mongolian chants if there were any money in it. he should have quit in the summer of 69, although he never would have been played because he sucks.

If he had any sort of sense of humor at all, he would learn a Bryan Adams song and play it when people yell that out. Like how Moby used to play "Freebird" whenever anyone yelled that at his shows.

Honestly, most of the artists I listen to rarely do interviews or even have their picture taken. I don't know why people get so infatuated with these musicians and their petulant egos and temper tantrums like Ryan Adams and Kanye West.

My that's a sandy vagina.

FTR I couldn't tell you who Ryan Adams was. I think I heard him referred to on the radio once years ago, and yeah I thought they meant the canadian guy. After reading the article, he sounds like a douche, but should proabably be put on a suicide watch. He shouldn't be stopped, it's just that someone should watch him do it.

\\snark you

Hecklers have screamed out "Summer of '69" much akin to how people yell out "Freebird" at shows.

He usually throws a tantrum at that point and either starts hitting people or leaves.

Somehwat funny story. I don't know anything of Ryan Adams at all.

Was a Lolapalooza in Chicago. We were in the back of a crowd, watching some band. In front of us was this dude in all red leather or some such outfit. He just reeked of douchebaggery. Posing all emo/hipster, making all these sad and purposely disinterested looks. I mean, I don't generally judge or notice people around me... but this guy we couldn't take our eyes off of.

We move to the next stage hours later, its Ryan Adams... and low and behold Ryan was the douchebag in front of us. Ha!

Now that I read stories about him, it all does make sense.

Whiskeytown was his best stuff. Maybe he'll grow up and stop worrying what others think of him. I can hope.

And who goes to concerts simply to piss off the band? That is about as lame as it gets.

More like douchebags who ruin a concert for everybody because they can't stand not being the center of attention. What were they expecting from the band - singing another artists songs because his name sound similar? That's stupid.

Well, I went to a radio music festival back in the mid-90's and the first band on stage was Marcy Playground (Sex and Candy, ugh). Between two songs my 16 year old self was found to be yelling YOU SUCK at the top of my lungs. I stopped when he answered me, "Thanks" and continued with his set. I was terribly embarrassed and went to the second stage and saw Jimmy's Chicken Shack (freakin' awesome live shows).

I listen to him quite a bit. I don't understand the "emo" label... he plays sad, country-infused rock. I don't see any similarities between him and MCR, Panic!, or Dashboard Confessional. Not all sad music is "emo," or are Joni Mitchell and Johnny Cash now considered Emo as well?

And furthermore HardOn, I missed the memo equating Ryan Adams to a modern-day Wham!

What I'm getting from this is that it is better to just listen to music and not celeb press about musicians. I'm perfectly happy just knowing Ryan Adams from his music and being ignorant of the gossip. I just don't really care when it comes to people that are actual creatives (unlike mere performers like Britney, etc...); they do get a pass for being weirdos.

Saw him a year ago in Northampton, MA

I enjoyed this bit of banter in between songs when he was tuning. You can even hear it in the recording on archive.org

guy in crowd: MORE PIANO
ryan adams: uhh.. less audience!!
other guy in crowd: LESS MONEY
other guy in crowd: ungrateful!

Decent show, though.

I was at Humble Pie in Raleigh one night several years ago, and noticed this oddly dressed guy acting like he was the shiznit, looking like an utterly pathetic poser. I had no idea who he was, but somebody told me later that was Ryan Adams.

I don't know the guy, but he did shack up with a friend's sister for a time way back in the day here in Raleigh, and yeah, he was supposedly a tool back then too.

That said, lots of respectable folks and friends think very highly of his music around these parts, but everybody really misses Whiskeytown.

This is a fantastic point; as an artist who plays in public, you need to learn how to handle crowds or they will tear you apart. Sting used to curse and flip people off; it looks like moby dealt with things is an ironic way. But the Heckler is someone you gotta be able to handle.

The best heckler-handling in all of showbiz is, by far, Eddie Izzard.

I got to see JCS several years back and (I was really, really high) between one of the songs the tech forgot to cut the delay on the singer's guitar off and (being quite loaded himself) he started playing along with the loop. He just kinda jammed with the delay loop for like 5 minutes and the band took a break and drank beer while laughing pretty hysterically. Probably one of the best live shows I've seen in a long time. The best live SHOW was Tool on the first AEnima tour but the best live performance I've ever seen was Pantera/Anthrax/Coal Chamber/Soilent Green. Phil Anselmo came out during Anthrax and sang a Celtic Frost song and Scott Ian came out during Pantera and they did 'Caught in a Mosh' then Scott and Dime jammed for about 10 minutes while Phil took a shiat or something.

Ditto. He should have concentrated more on the music than trying to be a poet. Cold Roses had some great music, everything since has been overly stuffed with lyrics and just boring.

As someone who had the misfortune the other night of sitting at the bar next to dullard with turdjuice for brains who tried to tell me the Beatles White Album was "too emo", it seems now 'emo' just ubiquitously stands for any song that conveys innate human emotion.

So as a fellow paying customer who might be enjoying the show, I have to be distracted by the douchenozzle standing next to me scream, in all of his glorious wit and originaltiy, "Freebird" or "You Suck", because ... of course ... it's all about him. It's his world, we're all just passing by.

And the musicians are the egomaniacs?

He has a reputation of being a crybaby, so he brings it on himself. Remember how that one kid in class would always cry or whimper when picked on, so eventually everyone picked on him? Same thing.

So since the douchenozzle in the audience knows with some certainty that his douchenozzle behavour is going to elicit a douchenozzle reaction, and turn the attention on said douchenozzle, then it's perfectly okay to ruin the experience for everyone else.

I guess he thinks that he purchased a personal performance with his ticket, and the rest of us just paid money to sit in on it as he manipulates the experience. How lucky for us, and how gracious for him to allow us the privilege. I just wish the venue had printed tickets that said "One Evening with Ryan Adams Personally Playing For Drunken, Frat-boy Douchebag" on the ticket so I knew what I was paying for ahead of time.

No. I'd say if someone in the audience screaming out loud one name is enough to rattle your main act, you sir have paid money to see a pussy get on stage

and not the good kind

Umm, look...at every live show I've seen, from shiatty, going-nowhere bar bands to arena shows, the crowd makes noise and yells shiat. If Mr. Adams can't handle that, he needs to find a new profession.

Hell, you know what? I'll just go ahead and give this one to him. The next time someone yells "SUMMER OF '69!" at one of his shows, he should play a painfully slow-tempoed, nine-minute-long version of the song. If they keep it up at the next show, make the cover thirteen minutes long and, if possible, even slower. It usually shuts a heckler up if you play the song they think they're being clever by requesting. And nobody wants to hear a thirteen-minute-long, super-slow version of "Summer of '69", so the next person who screams it out will get beaten by other fans. Problem solved.

But perhaps Mr. Adams, who has written some pretty awesome songs in his time, would rather be a biatch and stomp his feet and say "I quit!".

He did, it seems: author. He cited "powerful stage-fright" as one of his reasons for quitting, so there is that.

My thoughts exactly. Nearly every show I've ever played in my life, if not every single one, there has been some genius calling out "Skynyrd" or "Freebird." I've come up with all sorts of work-arounds, but I think I might try the "slow, awful" approach. Of course, a 7-minute "Freebird" would have to be at 280BPM. That's probably a good way to go.

So once again, the rest of the audience has to sit through a 9 minute act of Summer of 69 in response to some douchnozzle in the audience decided the world is all about him and the rest of us are just passing through, rather than enjoying the concert they paid to see.

Here's a wacky, zany idea .. you're not a special snowflake. The world isn't about you. You're just one among many who paid to see the show. If you're not enjoying the show, you and your associated company can LEAVE and spare your douchenozzle behavour to those who willingly chose to be subjected to it that evening.
