(Contact Music) Interesting Cheap Trick, running out of songs that people recognize, plan a Sgt Pepper's tribute by performing the entire album backed by an orchestra. Never will "When I'm 64" be performed with such authenticity and earnestness   (contactmusic.com) divider line 31

Cheap Trick are still viable and vital. Their last two albums may not have sold well, but they were very good. And Cheap Trick are one of the best live acts out there.

And FWIW, the only one even close to 64 is Rick Neilsen, who is 62. The rest of them are still in their mid 50's.

I learned to appreciate that, for good or ill, Cheap Trick were a massive influence on 80s glam rock. From Slash to Nikki Sixx ect ect ect... one of the bands that always came back amidst claims of Aerosmith and T-Rex was always, always Cheap Trick

What they said.

Cheap Trick was a major influence to not only Glam Rock, but practically invented Power Pop.

If you ever get a chance to see them perform, don't pass it up.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Cheap Trick has rocked longer and better than almost any other band. My favorite Rick Neilson insanity is when he had a console stereo made out of balsa wood. He put a boom box in it and walked down the street with this blaring coffin on his shoulder.

I had an older classical music-loving friend who had somehow heard Live at Budokan. He then went into a period where he liked to point at people and say, "I want you ... to want me." Cheap Trick has the power.

a cheap trick, indeed!

/rimshot? anyone?

Even if they did influence those '80s glam rockers, Cheap Trick are still fine by me. I admire the way they hang in there, year after year, recording, playing shows, well after many of their contemporaries broke up are just fizzled out...

Cheap Trick rocks, it's a shame they don't get the credit they deserve. The only reason they're "running out of songs" is that radio refuses to play good music, and shoves nickelback and britney down our throats.

Go out and buy all their records, you'll find they have no shortage of great material, including the BEST Beatles covers.

I wish the article had more info -- what orchestra? Who's going to transcribe the music for full orchestra? The most famous guy I know for that (Jaz Coleman, who did Symphonic Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Doors, plus "Angie" for the Rolling Stones) doesn't do that kinda orchestra work anymore, only his own original music.

I suppose Danny Elfman could but he seems an unlikely candidate.

As much as I love Cheap Trick, they better have a top-notch orchestra and a good "composer" if this is gonna be good. And I'd like it to be great, even though I doubt I'll ever get to see it.

Rick Nielson has the best pad ever, including a full indoor basketball court, a million dollar guitar collection, owns several good/great restaurants, has probably banged Rachael Ray, and plays guitar on many records you own (not just Cheap Trick).

In other words, he is loving life. And is in a kick ass influential band.

Go Rick and go Bun.

My band has done that with every Beatles album since Rubber Soul on the 40th anniversary of their release.

We just did the entire "white album" in August along with other assorted Beatles songs. Check it out.

Not a Cheap Trick, just hard work (SFW, new window)

Elfman can't read music. He hums or whatever his melody lines to a transcriber. Arrangers, conductors and others with training and talent take over from there. Their credits come at the end of the picture, in the list of all those names most people walk out on. He was great in Oingo Boingo though.

Cheap Trick is on my lists of bands to see that I have missed out on so far.

Not bad at all. Actually pretty good. You need all that instrumentation to even approximate the orchestrations on those LPs. I can't imagine how much work those arrangements were. Nice work.

I first saw them in 79. Amazing band live. Their last album was ok but the one before that was amazing. Regardless - their studio albums don't mean anything till you've seen them live.

Besides - this is not a first for them.

Cheap Trick are all huge Beatles fans so this should be pretty cool.

/love their version of "Magical Mystery Tour"

Their version of Magical Mystery Tour is one of my all time favorite remakes

They have managed to stay together (!) all these years and stay true to their music. Met them in a meet and greet when they opened for Stone Temple Pilots in late 90's. They were classy and appreciative of everyone backstage (Robin and Rick helped my friend who was recording a promo fix her malfunctioning DAT recorder.) STP were obnoxious, predatory and in Weiland's case, pathetically wasted. And where is STP and its members now? Doubt STP will still be around after 25 years, if even alive, unfortunately, as they were pretty good in the day.

Love it when a FARK headline backfires.

This would be cool to experience...as long as they don't release this as a CD and/or DVD and expect people to buy it.

In NYC I've seen the Fab Faux live play Sgt. Peppers, the White Album and Rubber Soul/Revolver in their respective entirely.
All three shows were fantastic. (I believe they also did Abbey Road, but I missed that one.)

But would I buy a CD of the Fab Faux or Cheap Trick playing Sgt. P? No.

/Saw CT in '82 on the 'One on One' tour, and they were amazing.
//Zander still has one of the great voices out there.

Rickenbacker 2009-01-14 12:41:32 PM
I would buy a CD/DVD of that. If anyone can pull it off, and show respect, it would be Cheap Trick.

Got to see them do the Sgt Pepper Tribute last year at the Hollywood Bowl. Excellent. I mean, the whole thing sounded great! I was amazed how good Robin still sounds after all these years. Terribly underrated singer.

Can you honestly tell me you forgot? Forgot the magnetism of Robin Zander, or the charisma of Rick Nielsen?"

In the 90s I saw Cheap Trick open for Meatloaf in Atlanta. Easily one of the best shows I've ever been to. And Meatloaf was pretty damn good too.

People forget that Rick and Bun played on the Double Fantasy sessions w/Lennon, even though those recordings didn't show up until Lennon's box set.
