Both of their fans will be ecstatic!

Makes sense. They've been systematically re-releasing their entire catalog and it's been getting great reviews.

I'm personally most excited for the Terror Twilight reissue.

Wow, there's only two of us?

And there's one who commented here before me?

That means we're both in this thread! Hi Clancifer! What are the odds?

Yes, but I doubt many people feel embarrassed to own Pavement albums ten years later, either. And Pavement stopped before they started sucking.

I like how the "emo" band and the "metal" band guys have the same pose.

I hope they won't be headlining. I remember a rumor about The Smiths. I realize it's a multi-day event, but after a long day in the desert, I'd expect more of a pay-off than Pavement.

archie leach 2009-01-13 04:49:57 PM
They're not the only band that I've ever walked out on mid-set (survived 6 increasingly awful songs), but they were the worst - by a very large margin.

InmanRoshi 2009-01-13 04:57:02 PM
Made some alright records, but Dear God in heaven did they ever suck live.

Gangway Fathead 2009-01-13 05:08:13 PM
Dear Cochella

Please stop having bands I REALLY want to see. I am too old to drag my ass out to the desert to sweat to the oldies with a half million other people.

Don't forget New Kids On The Block. Their first album was released on a boutique label before they found a home with a major for "Hangin' Tough."

Best band ever.

But if they're doing it just for money and not enjoying it...then they should just give it a rest.

I hate irony in music. I hate bands that believe that there is some ethos in not being good at what they do. Smashing Pumpkins, for all the fail they are now, released 3-4 amazing albums, that were filled with a guy wanting to be the biggest rock star in the world, and making the sort of music that made it possible, and he took it seriously.

Pavement made disposable music. Period. Steve Malkmus is just as big a douchebag as Billy Corgan, he just doesn't have the songs to back it up.

I've never understood the "irony" charge against Pavement (when I hear "ironic" in regards to bands, I think of Weezer) I also think they were very good at what they did, even if it was as far afield from SP (another band I like) as imaginable.

At the end of the day there are a lot of Pavement songs I can sit down and play and sing with an acoustic guitar (You are a Light, Range Life, Shady Lane to name a few) so it's not like they weren't writing "real" songs.

You mean Panic! At the Disco and Fallout Boy won't be reuniting in 20 years to the delight of middle aged Gen-Y'ers?

Probably for the best.

This.

Billy wrote the best goddamn album of the 90's, while Pavement made excuses as to why their records sounded like a highschool band's demo tape: they were too cool to care. At the end of the day no on is going to remember who the fark Malkmus was because he never tried hard enough to make a decent record.

Gish, Siamese Dream, Pisces Iscariot, most of Mellon Collie. I agree, 3 - 4 is the correct count.

I'm going to argue for 5 with "Adore" mainly because, though it deviated stylistically from the previous albums, that was the one that got me into the band.

Proof? This

you know how i will prove im more cool than a band that thought they were cool because they pretended not to be cool?

i will come into this thread and comment about how much the band sucks. and i will do it without irony.

Adore, for me, was the last nail in the SP coffin. I listened to it twice and then gave it away.
That's only the third time I'd done that with an album in my life.

Since this is probably the last Pavement thread for a good long time let me leave you with this advice...

watch out for the gypsy children in electric dress, they're insane.
I hear they live in crematoriums and smoke your remains

roscotsmalls 2009-01-14 03:18:17 AM
Smashing Pumpkins- Over serious mope rock for pretentious whiners who like to watch themsleves make pouty faces in the mirror...

Pavement- Funny, goofy and sometimes clever music for people who like to sit in lawn chairs and drink beer....

I will have to go with Pavement on this one

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

3 Pavement albums are better than the very best SP album, and I like SP just fine. Gish or Siamese Dream do not even come close to Slanted and Enchanted, Wowee Zowee, or Brighten the Corners.

They'll form Indie-Supergroups (complete with mascots).

I'mSupposedToGetPudding 2009-01-15 10:26:27 PM
Early SP was much better than later SP because Corgan's godawful voice was drowned out by some solid rock music. Somewhere between Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie someone lied to Corgan and said, "Hey, your voice ISN'T horrifying," so he cranked up the vocals, started playing dressup instead of playing guitar, and the result was painful.

Pavement weren't trying to be rock stars. Yeah, sometimes they sucked, but they didn't do it in makeup.

/feels old, now.
