I think you mean untune their guitars.

/love me some Sonic Youth

Cool... though the last couple of albums I heard from them were pretty stagnant and uninspired, in my opinion.

But I like these guys a lot, so I'll end this post on a positive note - Daydream Nation still stands up as a great freaking album and should be in everyone's collection.

No, they just need to wait for Thurston to fark his guitar again.

Are you kidding subby? Tuning guitars on stage is their whole act!

Rev. Skarekroe [TotalFark] 2009-01-13 04:58:29 PM
Holy crap! These guitars have been out of tune for 25 years! What were we thinking!? No wonder those old records sound so noisy!

UncleScam 2009-01-13 05:15:19 PM
i know this takes a big poop on the joke, but i've seen SY twice - they have a whole TEAM of people tuning their dozens of guitars.

the 'sonic nurse' tour was great - their live line-up was strong with o'rourke (sp?) on guitar/bass duty.

Thurston Moore is about 45 now. Why does he still look like he's in high school?

H31N0US 2009-01-13 05:47:03 PM
This is that band that it's cool to like, despite that they suck, right?

Luxowell 2009-01-13 05:49:05 PM
Rev:

Well, not THOSE guitars...

About 5 years ago they had a touring trailer stolen that had all their gear in it.

The theives were probably baffled to find guitars with stuff like 3 D strings... in a row... on the same guitar.

It must be nice to live in a self-centered world where only your opinion is fact. Too bad we don't all live there, huh?

Jealous much? And your bands name is...? Hey, is that Nickleback I hear on the radio? You better go run over and turn it up lil buddy

Not as good as the Minutemen, but they can't go on tour anymore. "Dirty" got me through some good times years ago. Three cheers for Sonic Youth.

Rather Ripped was on my car stereo that whole summer. Their best one since Dirty, if not better. I hope they don't go back to 45 min of drone.

Bomar: Can't wait to see them again. It will be SY show # 10 for me!

They showcased a lot of the higher energy songs on the last tour (Rather Ripped), and not so much of the shoegazer stuff they've been playing since A Thousand Leaves. I hope the new album reflects that.

Re: those pointing out Thurston is nearing 50.

At SXSW last year, he did a solo show featuring songs from Trees Outside the Academy. For the encore, he introduced the Velvet Underground rarity I'm Not a Young Man Anymore explaining that he's "nearing the big five-oh." And he goddamn killed that farking song. I mean holy shiat, it was the most amazing performance I've seen of anything, ever.

I listened to most of Daydream Nation again today and I must say that while I recognize their impact, it didn't do much for me. Does anyone have a suggestion for some of their newer stuff for a SY noob?

Walkens Syndrome 2009-01-13 10:00:04 PM
Necrosis. Try Rather Ripped. Its the one that came out in 06. Songs are catchy, not too long.

Try Pink Steam from Rather Ripped. I've seen it live twice, both times as a 2nd or 3rd encore, and it was incredible energy.

And give Daydream Nation another try after a while. The driving groove of Candle, the punk energy of Silver Rocket, and the sultry vocals of 'Cross the Breeze grow on ya...

I worked backwards and then forwards from that. I'll never like anything post-Daydream as much as everything before it (Dirty is a possible exception) but they really have some great records later into their career. Try "Experimental, Jet Set, Trash, and No Star." I just got back into that one.

Was never a big fan of them in the 90's, just couldn't get into them, but they were interesting none the less.

So, fast forward to 2004. The wife and me are at Voodoo Fest in New Orleans when what to my wondering eyes do behold, Sonic Youth will be playing. Hey, those guys are legends, let's check 'em out. Their fist song was 20 minutes of a looping unoriginal pile of noise. The second song was "...against George Bush" and was a looping unoriginal instrumental pile of noise that ended with them faking destroying their instruments. The third song made us want to kill ourselves. We walked away.

The Polyphonice Spree were awesome. The Pixies blew my mind and Green Day just made the night a whole helluva lot of fun.

Then they did their job. Although I thought they stopped doing that in the 80s.
/Reading Goodbye 20th Century right now. Love SY, but they are a boring band to write about.

There are very very few bands I despise, but Sonic Youth is one of them.

I thought Rather Ripped was really good. Everything post-Daydream Nation is kind of hit or miss, though. It will be interesting to see where they go now that they're off DGC.

Just finished that. Overall not bad, but certainly nothing really groundbreaking revealed.

how about a little respect?
Even if you don't like their music, recognize that they're pioneers in the noise rock circles.

One of only two bands I've ever seen get booed off of the stage.

Opening for Neil Young and Crazy Horse @ Seattle Center Colesium circa 1991.

/Drivin'-'N-Cryin' kicked Sonic Youth's ass that nite

I saw that tour. Buncha baby-boomer stiffs waiting for mellow Harvest material. They didn't like SY (who were pretty good that night) and they sure didn't like the frigging noisy as hell Neil set they got that night either. During that tour, Neil jammed with them on 'Expressway to yr Skull' which he referred to as the "most beautiful farking song ever" or something along those lines.

I personally never could stand Drivin'-N-Cryin', but as live SY is a very hit-or-miss thing (I've seen them around a dozen times, of which maybe half were brilliant, three were good, two uninspired and one flat-out terrible), I totally believe that Drivin' were the better band the night you saw them.

It was in 2000, I saw the last show before the theft in Berkelley. I've seen them about 15 times coast to coast with taters and toast! First time at the Rat in Boston 1984
