none of those bands sound interesting in the least, based on the "sounds like" that they listed.

doublesecretprobation [TotalFark] 2009-01-13 12:05:43 PM
I Should Care Why?: Hands down the best project the brilliant Wes Borland has ever been a part of, and yes, including Limp Bizkit.

oh yeah, i'm going right out to buy all those albums on that guys authority!

Stopped reading after the first paragraph -

1.) Driver Side Impact - Emo/Post-Hardcore

Yeah.

No thanks.

Yoweigh [TotalFark] 2009-01-13 12:14:24 PM
post-hardcore? wtf does that mean?

SockMonkeyHolocaust 2009-01-13 12:17:09 PM
It's all just pop music. Who really cares about its artistic purity or its ability to be recognized by other people whose careers hinges on being able to sell units?

OldScotch [TotalFark] 2009-01-13 12:20:02 PM
Yoweigh: post-hardcore? wtf does that mean?

Persumably, they were hardcore emo, but now they've wimped out.

In any case, I disagree that I should hear of them.

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2009-01-13 12:20:55 PM
THose are corporate rock whores, completely generic looking and pushed out there by a label. EVen the entire article itself smells of cheap promotion. And there is nothing genuine about any of them, they all look like pre-fabricated poseurs with make up and absolutely nothing to say. the kind of band that will be long gone next month

YOU have better taste than that, whoever you are

yeah, my work here is done. not a chance any of those bands are good if the author thinks he needs to qualify that a project is better than even limp bizkit.

Yoweigh: post-hardcore? wtf does that mean?

i think it means that it is to hardcore, what post-punk is to punk. that is to say; derivative of said earlier style, but evolved into another genre.

yeah, this. Sadly, we probably will hear of them.

Sorry subby, I will not like the Jonas Brothers no matter how much you claim they "rock".

1.) Driver Side Impact
Boring and generic. A million bands sound just like that.

2.) The Confession

Nothing new here either.

3.) Black Light Burns
A little more interesting, but one of the douchebags from Limp Bizkit in the band.

4.) Fair to Midland
System Of A Down syndrome.

5.) Red

FM radio fodder
. My first impression after a few seconds of each song on their MySpace page is kind of a cross between Disturbed and Tool. Total fail.

Guy Innagorillasuit [TotalFark] 2009-01-13 12:38:45 PM
Yoweigh: post-hardcore? wtf does that mean?

It doesn't mean anything when used by a guy that thinks those five bands are "fresh" in any way shape or form.

I_Love_Verdi [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-01-13 01:05:48 PM
Tricky: It's pretty clear based on the photos that these are all really just the same band.

I must be really, really old, the only bands I've heard of on that whole page are Nine Inch Nails and Iron Maiden. All the other bands sound like random words put together to sound "trendy" and "cool" (or whatever kids are saying these days for something that is culturally significant to their age group).

Ninja_Pancakes: (or whatever kids are saying these days for something that is culturally significant to their age group).

these days we kids say "hibbity-bop" instead of "cool." please feel free to use hibbity-bop in conversations with any youth you may happen across from now on.

/you're welcome

DslainteC [TotalFark] 2009-01-13 02:23:26 PM
Look, I consider myself to be a hibbity-bop guy, but I don't think I'd like any of those bands.

I'm 26. I'm not that old. This article is for those people seeking to be slightly more underground than Entertainment Weekly. I already know what these bands sound like without even having to listen to them.

No really that is a very open minded attitude. I don't need to hear them to know they suck. Lord knows you would have no integrity if you liked a band outside of ironing maidens and Rush.

/I dont think i will listen to any of these albums

I see everybody is throwing the hate down on these guys (rightfully so, I might add).

I've tried on a couple of occasions to get a greenlight for a survey thread looking for the best newer music, but didn't come to fruition. Anyone feel like giving me some suggestions as to what you think is good these days? I have a pretty wide range of "likes".

Mirrorz 2009-01-13 02:57:32 PM
I'm not a fan of most newer bands but I kind of like Black Light Burns.

Some of the instrumental music sounds like it was on John Carpenter's The Thing soundtrack and that movie will forever be awesome... or until hollywood farks it up with a remake.

Now that I think about it, that might have been on that album of cover songs...

When are you going to learn that your continuing use of "Ironing Maidens" is just not hibbity-bop?

Farked Up - The Chemistry of Common Life. (apply un-filter as needed)

Yes, it's a critical darling right now, but damn, it makes some serious good noise. Hardcore with a side of shoegaze. If you're good with a lead singer that has a serious case of the angry screaming, then they're worth a listen.

omahatattoo 2009-01-13 03:03:23 PM
What do you farkers think of Protest the Hero, Apocalyptica, and The Sword?

this is like the 3rd place i've heard them mentioned in the last week. i've heard a couple of snippets, and like that they still sneak in some harmonizing with the screaming. worth buying?

More proof that any douchebag with a PC and an opinion can be a music reviewer.

If only there was some certification you had to get to review music (or anything for that matter) we might not be subject to band after band of mediocre hacks appealing to the lowest common denominator...

/It's a dream. I know.

FWIW, I kept hearing about TV on the Radio a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised when I did give them a listen. Golden Age off the most recent album is a damn fine song. Sorry.....yeah screw this guy and all he stands for!

Hey, no problem and thanks for the compliment.

The album is absolutely gorgeous. Stephen Hitchell has exceeded every expectation I had...and he's got a live album due this month as well!

This.

Like most people, as soon as I saw the "sounds like" I moved on to better things, like this piece of tape I found stuck to the bottom of my shoe.

killahgrag [TotalFark] 2009-01-13 03:28:01 PM
FTM is decent. Heard of them thanks to the Zune Marketplace. The Confession sounds like something I might like. I'm really digging the way emo-core and old-school thrash metal are melding (BFMV, A7X, Haste The Day, It Dies Today, Trivium (although more old-school thrash than emo-core)).

You will never be able to make it to the top of my listening charts right now though. No one will ever top Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power, Metallica - Master of Puppets, Machine Head - Burn My Eyes, Tool - 10,000 Days, All That Remains - The Fall of Ideals, KsE - Alive or Just Breathing, and Me First and the Gimmie Gimmie's - Ruin Johnny's Bar Mitzvah (very, very seriously).

Or go to the live concerts of the bands you do like and actually show up to the show early and pay attention to the opening bands.

/Finger Eleven (opened for Fuel, took my gf to it)
/Fear Factory (opened for Black Sabbath and Nirvana)
/Trivium (can't remember)
/Machine Head (can't remember)
/Coal Chamber (Anthrax and Pantera)
/Soilent Green (same show as Coal Chamber)
/Slipknot (Ozzfest)
/Sublime (Warped Tour)
/Clutch (opened for Marilyn Manson (shut up, they used to be good before they lost their guitarist and drummer) and Jack Off Jill

//however, I've seen Days of the New 3 times (Fuel/Collective Soul/DOTN, Metallica/Jerry Cantrell/DOTN, Veruca Salt/DOTN/Creed (when they first hit the radio)) and they were booed off the stage all three times

Uzzah 2009-01-13 03:46:50 PM
Again, there is something for everyone in this weeks' lesson. We have some emo stuff, metal stuff, and as always some good rock and roll.

Ah. This is a new definition of "everyone" that I wasn't previously familiar with.

Not new, but I recommend getting your hands on Oceansize's criminally overlooked Frames.
Also pleasantly surprised by recent recommends Elbow and The Twilight Sad.
For instrumental stuff (i.e. 'post-rock') I highly recommend 65daysofstatic, Caspian, and The Evpatoria Report, particularly their first LP.
Really bleak stuff but I'm expecting great things from these guys:
Her Name Is Calla.

I bought it and haven't regretted it. Yeah, I still buy CDs, I'm strange like that. It stands up to repeat listening. If you're a music geek then "Farked Up is to Hardcore what Husker Du was to Thrash" might be the easiest analogy.

They've managed to piss off the punk/hardcore iconoclasts with three guitars, some synths and massive overdubbing. That just adds icing on it.

In terms of standout tracks personally "Son the Father", "Crooked Head" and "The Chemistry of Common Life" are my faves. "Twice Born" is the one you can find on most review sites as a standout track. The live versions you can find on youtube are crap, sound-wise, because they're generally some guy on a camera phone.

In some way I think they're critics darlings because, well, they're kind of a great white hope for punk or hardcore to finally embrace change, which ironically enough, they've been loathe to do. There's been a general lack of shakeup in music so that could be the reason for the hype, besides the fact they do good stuff. They've got some great energy and it's desperately needed in the day of hipster irony.

Yes, I'm evangelizing. But I haven't been excited about a recent album in a while now.
