(Rolling Stone) Followup Iggy Pop remembers Ron Asheton: "Musicians were influenced by what Ron pioneered. The most obvious would be Sonic Youth... bands that use dissonance and overdrive. I hear a little bit in Smashing Pumpkins... also in Nirvana"   (rollingstone.com) divider line 18

Nooooooo!!!!!!

Ron Asheton was one of the people responsible for punk rock and heavy metal. That guy could turn out awesome riffs in his sleep.

Man, this sucks.

I don't mean any disrespect towards this dude or his band and former band mates (I don't listen to them so I can't judge quality) but there were plenty of big bands using those things before they made it big.

There's a memorial service with some special guests on the 17th in Detroit. Niagara organized it.
Lifted from a press release:
"For more information on the Ron Asheton tribute, go to myspace.com/niagaradetroit. There will be a cash bar in the Hall as well as in the Jazz Café. The Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts is at 350 Madison in Detroit."

He came up with the most primitive, minimal riffs that pretty much influenced the punk bands of the late 70s also
