I just came in here to say that almost all Corporate Punk bands suck, and that Blink-182 certainly did.

I hope they never come back; they were a symptom of what has become the tragic dilution of the term 'Punk Rock'. It was for that reason that I was intensely annoyed by both Blink-182 and all the dumb kids who bought the MTV line that they were a radical, dangerous band. What a joke.

A generation later, the same sad thing is happening with Avril Lavigne, which I still cannot believe. When people refer to her music as "Punk", I take enormous pleasure in laughing right in their faces.

When I heard Blink 182 was on "indefinite hiatus," I did myself a little jig. But then I realized they were just splitting off into two separate bands. There never was any personal conflict that drove a wedge into the band. This was a cold and calculated maneuver on their part. To quote the Ghostbusters: "let's split up." "Yeah. We can do more damage that way."

I don't care what their cover story is. They tried and failed to orchestrate a two-pronged assault on our ears, only to be driven back by apathy.

I just came in here to see if anyone's gone all "more punk than you!" snobby yet. I leave satisfied.

/bonus points because "Avril's not punk!" was included
//points subtracted because "Punk tapes in my Walkman! Uphill both ways!" hasn't been used yet.

I like Blink 182 (I know, the horror!)
Take Off Your Pants and Jacket was a good album.

While I certainly used to like Blink 182 between ages 13 and 16 (and, yes, still re-visit Dude Ranch once every few years, they're popularity is responsible for the corporate hijacking of an entire genre.

Enema of the State paved the way for "pop-punk" to enter the mainstream (yes, more than Dookie), and is thus responsible for what we see being labeled "punk" today.

"True" Punk bands didn't seem to mind riding their coattails for a bit --- got dragged to a Mad Caddies show and a band called The Real Mckenzies were playing. RM was much better than Mad Caddies, much, and they wore kilts!

However, they were riding the circuit with MC.

god, I hate Mall Punk.

Seth'n'Spectrum 2009-01-12 06:49:50 PM
Blink 182 were fun. Try denying them that. Their songs were catchy and essentially harmless, and because everyone else was too busy taking themselves seriously by searching their own assholes for 'creative talent', they managed to take a large bite out of the public's attention. Thus, they are hated.

That said, if I wanted to listen to punk, I wouldn't listen to them. Doesn't mean they weren't a really good band though.

deevo 2009-01-12 06:54:31 PM
I always found blink-182 tried too hard, even when I was 12.

And Mark Hoppus seems like a bag-o-fail to me. I mean, grow up already. Tom has his Angels & Airwaves thing, it does absolutely nothing for me, but whatever, it's fresh for him. Travis Barker's certainly doing his own thing. Mark's like caught in being a pop-punk kid forever or something.

The Dynamite Monkey 2009-01-12 07:05:58 PM
Not my favorite band, but I have to admit I always liked the way they arranged, record and mixed the guitar sounds on their records... sounds simpler than it is.

growing up i hated blink 182 because they were "fake punk", "sellouts", and all over the radio.
About 2 or 3 years ago i realized they weren't all over the radio, and actually enjoyed a few of their albums (Chesire Cat and their latest self titled are my favorites.)
I think when i stopped taking everything so seriously I was able to enjoy the random stupidity, humor, and immaturity. Once you realize they're not trying to spit in the eye of the man and they're not trying to assault the British Queen they can be quite enjoyable.

Yeah man, punk rock is all about terms and labels. You nailed it!

A generation later, the same sad thing is happening with Avril Lavigne, which I still cannot believe. When people refer to her music as "Punk", I take enormous pleasure in laughing right in their faces.

I never understood this. So you don't like Avril's image? You don't like Blink 182's image? All you seem to care about is whether they're "punk" or not. I don't get it.

Is it considered "punk" to care about genre definitions? Or is it more "punk" not to care and just listen (or not listen) to music without worrying whether or not it's "diluting the term punk rock"?

/Dude Ranch is a good album.
//So is Let Go.
///I'm not punk enough for you!!!!!

huskers97 2009-01-12 08:34:12 PM
I'm more punk than all of you, so I'm getting a big kick out of these replies.

FreakinB 2009-01-12 09:01:09 PM
I liked them. Not my favorite, but enjoyable. It helps when you ditch the classifications and take it for what it is.

If you don't like it that's fine, but don't try to hold them to a definition they obviously weren't holding themselves to.

may there never again be a blink-182 side project

If you're over the age of 14 and care about what is or is not "punk", it might be time to grow up.

There's only two kinds of music: stuff you like, and stuff you don't like. Labels and categories are for those incapable of thinking for themselves.

echoshizzle 2009-01-12 10:20:44 PM
I thought blink 182 was good. Their first albums were pretty decent, but i enjoyed their later stuff more. I dunno why, but most "real blink 182 fans" loved dude ranch and chesire cat more.fark that.

I gotta say, aside from Take of Your Pants and Jacket, I've liked every Blink album. They played music they liked and didn't take themselves seriously. Yeah, it was called "Pop-Punk" and to say it didn't have any relation to punk is kidding yourselves. It might not be "real punk" but it had some roots in it. They were harmless and fun, and they weren't trying to change the face of music or anything.

I agree with this 100%:

This. I farking loved Blink when I was in high school and really wished I had gotten to see them when they were still together. They belong in a separate category than real punk, but I still wouldn't put them in quite the same category as Avril Lavine. I dunno, probably has something to do with how they don't take themselves so seriously, and Avril thinks that she's speaking to everyone's souls or something. Or it could just be that Avril became big a few years later than Blink, when I was old enough to tell the difference between manufactured pop-punk and real punk, who knows.

/Also probably had to do with how much my little sister was into each band.

marius2 2009-01-13 03:24:52 AM
I liked blink, was afraid to admit it when I was younger. Take off your pants and jacket was the last album I liked, but they would still get a hit or two after that. Cheshire Cat and Dude Ranch were two of my favorite albums from that era. Enema and take off were good as well, lacking when compared, but still good.

But yeah, it has been sad about 50 times but oh well... No need to compare them with other punk bands, it is the record labels that make up the genres and descriptions. Blink always seemed like they were just having fun. Travis is amazing, I saw them live when I was a younger kid and it was great to watch them do their thing, glad I went.

Heh.

Fark you subby.

Blink were the best band to come out of that pop-punk shiat fest they unwittingly catalysed. Anything else that came after was trying to emulate their success, and failing miserably.

Anyone dissing them for not being "real punk" is just afraid that their hardcore friends won't play with them anymore if they find out they listen to anything besides Black Flag and Propaghandi. Sure, they're not hardcore, but they're not manufactured by any means. Can't a band be genuine and accessible at the same time?

If they reunite I'll be one of the first in line to see them, and if it's anything like their last tour, it'll be farking awesome.

/was first in line for their last Aussie tour.
/last to leave, got to meet them backstage after the show.
/liked everything up until Dude Ranch.
/and everything AFTER.

I've always thought that Blink was fun music, although they were never one of my favorite bands. I'm against a reunion, however, because Angels and Airwaves are one of my favorite bands, and I don't want DeLonge (dickhead that he is) to stop making his own music.

I'm constantly surprised at how legendary Blink is among the teenage Warped Tour crowd. To those kids they're the pierced and tattooed Beatles, Zep, and Elvis. Check out the Warped message board for a good laugh.

Um yeah... except that Blink were formed two years before Green Day got their break from Dookie, so what were they trying to emulate exactly? Blink & Green Day were cut from the same cloth mate.

/Besides, Blink >> Green Day.

It all went downhill once they kicked out Scott Raynor. I saw them open for Primus once and was blown away. Barker ruined the band.
