I remember back in 1981 my dad picked up the one I was playing with and solved it in about 20 minutes - didn't see what the fuss was about....

Joelogon [TotalFark] 2009-01-11 06:36:26 PM
Screwdriver. Problem solved.

Julieahni [TotalFark] 2009-01-11 06:37:19 PM
I have never solved it. And I'm at peace with that.

hamiltonjdavid [TotalFark] 2009-01-11 06:42:28 PM
Yeah, and anyone could solve it in a few minutes by using Google to search for "Rubik's Cube Solver".

Link (new window)

Well, good for him though for not even bothering to buy a book or enter a few words into a search engine or something. Why learn something useful when randomly twisting a cube for a mere 26 years will get you to the goal?

WTF is breakfast TV?

TV in the mornings. Some Britishisms are complicated, but this one is pretty much self-explanatory.

In 26 years, even without google, he should have been able to discover the various patterns of moves to swap faces with each other. I mean, I don't know how you can play with something for years and not figure it out.

I can't solve the damned thing, but I never tried all that hard. I also can't play chess. I mean I can, and I'm pretty good for the first half of the game, but I can never see to the end to get to checkmate. Sucks.

though, it wasn't that hard..

In all seriousness, some people's minds are wired differently than others. Think autisic people. They are socially worthless yet they can calculate to the .000000000000000000th decimal in blazing speed.

Doing a Rubik's cube relatively fast is about as useful as being able to quickly tell someone what day of the week they were born on after learning their DOB.

Winning in Vegas, now that's something.

I recommend learning some of the basic mates (Queen/King, King/Rook, King/Bishop/Knight, etc.) and then go from there. The recent Chessmaster games have some pretty decent tutorials on it and they aren't too expensive. Especially if you get an older version like Chessmaster 10 or CM9000.

FTFA:

A spokesman for the governing body for competitions involving the puzzle, the World Cube Association, said it was 'definitely the longest it has taken' to finish the cube.

Well, that's one record that is easily beat. I'll just say I'm still trying to do mine - after 30 years. There, beat that, suckers!

Um... for the satisfaction of figuring out the puzzle instead of looking up the solution?

The point of a puzzle is not to look up the solution. The point of a puzzle is to solve it.
