All the really important people have negative numbers.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2009-01-11 06:31:16 PM
I'm tempted to propose the same thing for domain names. One billion dollars per year divided by 10^(number of non-dot characters before TLD), something along those lines, with a floor.

So if I get a license plate that's 42 characters long, will the state pay me a few grand?

Delaware does the same thing, but I think the lowest you can get is 4

TFA:Plates with four or fewer digits used to go only to the well-connected. Under Safety Commissioner John Barthelmes, those who want the plates apply for them, and the numbers are awarded as they become available to those with records of community or other service.

Is having a 4-digit New Hampshire license plate really that prestigious? Maybe the cops go easy on them, like the people with FOP stickers?

Is this a New England thing or something? A few years ago, the History Channel did a 10-part series called "The States" where they spent about 8 minutes discussing the history and culture of each of the 50 states. The fashionableness of low-number license plates was presented as one of the major aspects of life in Rhode Island.

Everyone here has vanity plates already, so I'm not surprised at all.

I thought this was a Middle Eastern thing as well . . . something about the Sultan of Brunei paying millions for a plate with just "5"

Too lazy to Google. I'll just assume that's the way it happened.

I read somewhere that the Saudis will pay millions of dollars for the single digit ones.

You know, I grew up here and never heard about this low number thing until I recently moved back. Now I know 3 people with 3-digit plates. They are quite proud of them.

Why do people care about low number license plates?

rindeee 2009-01-11 11:54:52 PM
Oh for the love of Alah. This is a carry-over that started in the Middle East, carried over into parts of Asia, and now has hit the mighty Eastern Seaboard. Many Arabic countries have a '1' for the supreme ruler (King, Sultan, pick your poison), 2 for the crown prince, and so on. The lower the number, the closer the relative (and thus wealthier). The Asian's loved the idea and auction the stupid things off in many countries (similar to their lucky number plates). This is just retarded.

Abu Dhabi is not part os Saudi, contrary to popular belief. It's the place Garfield kept mailing Nermal to. About an hour's drive from my apartment. Not enough bars to make it worth a visit.

Arabs also like palindrome plates: 12321 or whatever.

Delaware is the same way. The lowest numbers are getting bought for over 100k. Even numbers in the 20k and 30k range can fetch over 1k. Black plates are the only real investment in delaware now; real estate can tank, but low number plates' value will never go down.

If you've ever spent any time there, you'll know that there are few other aspects of life in Rhode Island.

Eowunyth: Why do people care about low number license plates?

Pick your favorite reason. But some people will use them if they have fleet vehicles with a couple letters in front to identify the company.

What really amuses me is here in NC you get 8 letters and characters, and there seems to be no limit on the creativity, or lack thereof in vanity plates. IMGR8 aside.......

lasercannon 2009-01-12 12:04:27 AM
I would want a complicated license plate, it makes it more difficult for people to remember it after one of my hit and run incidents.

swr2000: Delaware does the same thing, but I think the lowest you can get is 4

4 is the lowest that is not owned by the state (1 is for the gov, 2 is for the vice gov, 3 is for sec of state). I heard a rumor that 4 is owned by dupont co and is attached to some rusted, old-ass truck somewhere.

mistervague 2009-01-12 12:05:26 AM

My family once went to a super-fancy restaurant in London. Parked out from was a yellow Lambo with a license plate that said:

5
KUWAIT

Check with my man Kurt Vonnegut. His plate ran CHOICE. It runs upside down and backwards in a mirror. Also on a pack of Camels. But that's another story.

And if you said that zero was not a number you would be wrong. Zero is even you know and falls into the set of the natural numbers (integers)
