(Yahoo) Obvious Bush defends harsh interrogation tactics. This is in no way a plug for his favorite network's best TV show that happens to be kicking off its seventh season tonight. Besides, Bush is RUNNING OUT OF TIME   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 218

"We believe the information we gained helped save lives on American soil."

great. prove it. Citation needed.

what's that you say, "National secrets"? "Would jeopardize operations"?

that's what I thought.

You can like '24' and be against torture in real life. Entertainment != reality.

/really, people are saying that

We should totally kick that guy out of office.

I started a website to try and get people to help me do it a while back, but all I got in return was some crazy character from MIB giving me concern troll crap. Oh well, at least I bought Drew some beer.

"the information we gained helped save lives on American soil."

Annnnnnd..... he just gave his supporters, and those looking desperately for a way they could "legitimately" jump back behind him and start waving flags their rallying call for the next four years, and the "I told you so" if anything happens in the world after he leaves and these practices stop, no matter the reality.

Bicycle safety tip 2009-01-11 07:20:04 PM
I saw this interview. What a dumbshiat. More so than the financial collapse and the failed war on terror, his legacy will be the fact that the national debate is now about whether or not holding a person upside down and pouring water into their lungs constitutes "torture". We've come a looong way in only 8 short years.

signaljammer 2009-01-11 07:20:27 PM
I don't watch the show, but I am just in to reiterate that torture doesn't work very well, usually.

XMark: Is torture really that useful anyways?

I prefer to kill them with kindness. It's amazing what people will tell you when you stare into their soul and tell of them shiat-stained beauty you can see inside. And maybe give a few instructions on "brain washing."

It makes people so fuzzy they will tell you anything, but mostly they just start spouting "the truth."

I never like the "if you torture a guy, he'll just say what you want to hear" argument. I mean, the Pentagon has guys whose job it is to figure out more effective ways to torture people. They practically have PHDs in torture. So if they've put all this science behind it, and it's still unreliable, where the hell is my tax money going?

/Yeah, they have just as many guys on staff who are finding out more efficient ways to get people to say what other people want to hear.

It's ridiculous, yes, but it's so silly it's awesome. Think of it as a big ole chocolate-covered television donut with sprinkles.

Don't forget an innocent person being accused of being the mole, and the surprise return of somebody who we thought was dead (not just Tony. Edgar will come back as a cyborg or something)

You will fail. There is no CTU from what I have read. But they already showed a bad guy with power in the two hour movie.

WFern: and began legitimately advocating fascism

Sigh.

Yes, and Batman advocates vigilantism and Fight Club advocates blowing shiat up. Anyone who watches Dirty Harry (or any cop movie for that matter) wants their cops to break the rules and just blow people away.

Anyway, if you watched the show, torture doesn't work most of the time, and Jack does it against his agency's orders.

thesubliminalman 2009-01-11 07:32:29 PM
Why is a serious story threat like bush etc being thread jacked by a tv show? Anyone pay attention to anything important anymore? Thought not.

And, at some point Jack will be classified as rogue by CTU, and have to operate alone... or with the help of one loyal CTU member who believes in his innocence.

Considering we hanged the Japanese that did this in WWII, yeah. Part of me hopes that Bush leaves the country and is picked up and flown to the Hague. Part of me realizes it would be a terrible thing for the country overall. So, I'll just hope the soon to be ex-president sits on his a$$ and stays safe behind US law until we're willing to admit that, in a moment of fear, our leaders caved and destroyed some of the principles we stood for.

Then I hope Americans have learned to grow a f*cking spine and realize what being an American means. I hope they realize that you sometimes have to pay for freedom with your life. I hope that it means the end of the fear.

Torture does not produce intel only statements the inflictors want to hear.

My dad was in special forces for 30 years and recalled waterboarding as part of their training of what to expect when capturd.

Remember when torture is what the bad guys did as we were not like them?

http://www.theonion.com/content/node/30624 is closer to the truth than anything I might say. We all spent so long being outraged, that now it's like... "Bush said something outrageous... crap, I'm out of ketchup." Sad? Yup... incredibly. Look through the threads of the first six years of his presidency, and you'll see fightin' spirit. Now... *sigh*.

Few thoughts on 24

Used to love 24 and loved Seasons 1 - 4 then they tried to kill President Palmer (brother) again with a bomb with another insider's help. The writers turned into unimaginative, repetitive, and boring plot devices thus killing my interest and I haven't watched 24 since.

Loved the Jack heroin addiction and him in Mexico. Loved Curtis and hated the way his character was written out. Loved David Palmer, loved his death, but hated to see his character go.
