(YouTube) Cool The theme to CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" by the Barenaked Ladies is a lot longer and funnier than what you hear on Monday nights. Still not as hot as Kaley Cuoco, though   (youtube.com) divider line 65

I was on an American Airlines flight last night and they were showing Big Bang episodes on the cabin screens.

It was the episode where they're playing Klingon Boggle and they wind up watching America's Next Top Model with Penny.

I think I hurt myself on the armrest from laughing at this episode.

/sign of a good show: when reruns make you laugh.

Show could be SO much better with out the laugh track and 3 camera sitcom setup. Could just be my hate for that style though.

Three sitcoms not using it would be hard to list, they all just use it out of definition. True scottsman and all that.

Listing GOOD shows that used that would be a better question.

Hollywood seems to think that format works for them, so they keep using it. Who am I to suggest different?

But still, I find the laugh-track kills the jokes more than reenforcing the timing and punch. Making for dry delivery and robotic acting.

Production value and cost would obviously change, and that may be the major reason for the majority of its current usage.

In conclusion...do i have a point or anything?

No, im just half drunk, the Eagles won, and I dont like laughtracks. =D

I really wish CBS didn't have such a fit about this show. I can watch just about any major network television show online so that I may catch up. CBS doesn't like this show to be on hulu or their OWN website so I can't catch up. I went to some other sites and found that many people were having issues finding this show anywhere online as well. While other major tv companies are making advertising from things like hulu etc, CBS remains far behind the curve unable to adapt to modern television trends. The sad part is that there is no reason for this, and the show is about nerds, it's ironic that they wouldn't make it available on the internet a place where nerds live...

3 cams & laughtrack is almost obsolete at this point. It's a great way to make a show on the cheap, however.

Greenline: 3 cams & laughtrack is almost obsolete at this point.

The existence of Chuck Lorre Productions would invalidate that theory.

The only comedy in the top ten besides "Desperate Housewives" is "Two and a Half Men".

Let's not forget the complete failures of TV series such as Friends, Seinfeld, Cheers, and a thousand more.

Desilu's 3-camera, studio audience setup is not going away any time soon.

It's filmed in front of a live studio audience.

One of my favourite parts of the show is reading the blackboards in the background because that's real physics. Sometimes I recognize it too!

I immediately thought of TMBG's 'cover' of Why Does the Sun Shine... the tempo, beat, and overall cadence is really almost identical actually. BNL's tune is still plenty clever and well done on its own though.

I love the show, and its theme song. Although, I do have one quibble over the lyrics: why would autotrophs drool? They don't need saliva, since they don't have to digest food... they make their own (hence autotroph: auto = self, troph = nutrition).

Yes, yes... very Sheldon of me.

Damnit I hate "Big Bang Theory". I literally spaz out while I'm watching it, I just can't stand to watch the characters.

BECAUSE TRAINING MYSELF NOT TO DO THAT SHIAT WAS HARD!

It's like I can feel all my hard-won social skills, the results of countless trial and error human interactions, are slipping away as I revel in watching a bunch of nerds be nerds. After about five minutes I start screaming at the blonde because she's stupid, and her supposed "real world" smarts are anything but, and I'm trying to convince the geeks in the show that they've got the wrong value for the specific heat capacity of water or something.

It's at this point I need to be given a beer or a tranquilizer and I require at least a good half hour of observing normal humans before I feel ready to socialize again.

My non-nerd wife loves the show (the often offers to settle
disputes with Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock now), so at first
I was leery of a show about nerds that she liked. I gave it a
try, and it didn't catch my fancy. My wife reminds me strongly
Penny (in many ways).

Until about the 3rd episode I saw, when they were at the
restaurant talking about who would win: Godzilla or a bunch of
LOTR Orcs (assuming the Orcs were backed up by a Panzer division).

I've had that conversation, so that told me whoever was writing
the show knew what they were talking about, so I've continued to
watch.

And Kaley Cuaco is HOT (and Sarah Rue ain't bad, either).

It starts/started back today (12 Jan in the USA). The number of episodes in the rest of the season isn't official yet but probably a standard 24. No confirmation for third season yet, but then the second season won't be finished until around May/June so that's no surprise.

I agree with whoever upthread said a sign of a good show is it's funny in repeats. I've watched every episode several times and it's still hilarious.

If it's funny at all, it's already better than any BNL song I've heard.

Matter of taste, I'm sure, but I find them hugely boring, even annoying. I especially can't stand that 'Apartment' song. I feel like a drunk moron is slowly beating me with a plugged-in guitar.

I know plenty of people who are big fans, and I'm very happy for them. It's just not for me, even a little bit.

The Big Bang Theory drives me nuts. It has good geek humour, but it also works in stereotypes that are just wrong, and I can't stand stand them. I wonder if it's how black people felt watching comedy depictions of themselves in the 30s-50s. Also, standard annoying uncomfortable situations that every ordinary American sitcom does because it's expected.

Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock was hilarious though, thanks for that link.

Overall though, I think The IT Crowd is a far better geek comedy, because it goes more for geek humour than for making fun of geeks. Which I get plenty of in real life thanks.

The Barenaked Ladies are a bunch of unfunny, untalented, fat, ugly canadians. They suck. Anyone who likes them sucks.

We choose to be geeks. I think their abuse of other stereotypes (Indian families, overbearing Jewish mother, ditzy blondes) is more lazy than the "geeks in the wild" type.

I do really like this show and watch it weekly on DVR with the wife. While a bookworm and very intelligent, my wife isn't a "geek" but still loves it. I think the character development and consistency with Sheldon is the best thing about the show.

While the "laugh track" is a studio audience (yeah I was shocked, too), it is obviously one with a massive noise gate and heavy compression: dead silent or loud white noise, plus cue cards. Ugh.

Really? I thought it was the complete opposite. The IT Crowd just seems to make fun of geeks and used silly/basic techie stuff in the few episodes I watched before I got sick of it, whereas The Big Bang Theory's characters actually have conversations I've participated in. Sure, the characters are exaggerated (they all are in sitcoms), and Leonard annoys the heck outta me (kinda reminds me of me a few years back) but hey, I found it amusing.
