Did Iran threaten to wipe them off the map?

No, they are the map.

Or any mention of us not being on it.

I assume the point is that we keep insisting we're not really in Europe when we so obviously are.

"We have given space for the free expression of artists from 27 countries. Art is to arouse emotions and it is provocative sometimes," he said.

And, as every ar-teest knows, the more offensive it is, the more people will cover their dismay by calling it "art".

Agreed. Show a picture or it didn't happen.

And somewhere there is probably another map with Britain and 'no' EU.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who didn't see anything about Britain beyond the headline.

When I was living in New Mexico, I was amused by a joke map of the United States Southwest. New Mexico was missing, a statement on how so many people think the state isn't Part of the U.S.

Loki-L 2009-01-11 02:53:50 PM
That's the problem with a rotating chairmanship. Everyone gets their turn including those who really shouldn't. Now we can look forward to half a year of headlines along the lines of "EU President says or does something really stupid" and everyone will get the wrong impression that the people responsible somehow have the backing of a majority of european voters.

\ at least it should be entertaining
\\ boring Sweden is up after that
\\\ looking forward to Cyprus in 2012

Yeah, it's called "Great Britain & Ireland," oddly enough - and Michelin publishes it. Those haters.

ar_gyrion 2009-01-11 02:58:38 PM
Most Brits don't seem to consider themselves European, and many will gone on about how that they are different than the Europeans. Seeing with what the other countries are represented(ha ha, the French strike a lot and the Dutch have a lot of Muslims!), that is probably the message, the Brits don't see themselves as Europeans so they aren't on the European map. But I suppose one shouldn't expect that the Telegraph and its readers doesn't know when it is being made fun of.

Sure, there are joke maps of probably every US state, but would you make them a feature of your state capitol building? This just sounds ill-natured and inappropriate.

I would have assumed it referenced Area 51 and all the secret military testing in the desert, saying "it doesn't officially exist".

Enough of the sissy effete whining of the wine-and-cheese sets about who is on who's map. I don't give a damn for the whole lot of em, THEY caused both world wars, and THEY screwed up Versailles giving us today's Iraq and Middle East and THEY are responsible for ALL the Islamofascist terror in the world.

So I'm saying it now: LISTEN, EUROPE! Yes, YOU, Europe:

www.munoz-group.net

We hear in the US are tired of cleaning up after you. You can fight with each other all you like about whose on what map. From here on out the US will fight the war on terror without you. Maybe we'll move all the rest of the Muslims to YOUR countries, map or not, an let YOU deal with them.

GO USA

There are maps in classrooms in Argentina and Chile that show South America pointing UP, what we would consider North. It's all about perspective. Why is Antarctica at the bottom of the world? It doesn't look that way from space.

Our modern maps are Euro-centric.

BlueBook 2009-01-11 03:15:03 PM
I always thought it ridiculous that Europe was considered a separate continent, when it's so obviously a glorified peninsula of Asia. And yet Greenland is lumped in with North America! Where is the cartographic justice?

Folkstone, UK is closer to Calais, France than Avalon, Catalina Island is to Long Beach, CA yet no one has a problem with the Santa Barbara Channel Islands being a part of California -- except perhaps the Catalinos.

Oh, wait...

Conservative Roman Catholic Poland is depicted by a sculpture of priests raising the rainbow flag of the gay movement
...

France, despite the efforts of President Nicolas Sarkozy to reform its labour laws, is represented by a map of France covered with the inscription "Strike!".
...
The Netherlands is shown as having sunk beneath the sea in the aftermath of climate change and all that appears above the waves are the minarets of mosques, an explosive reference to the country's high levels of Islamic immigration.

HA! HA!

Crap, your right. Well Roswell, White Sands, and Los Alamos are all out there. That's all secret government stuff, too.

I was born in New Mexico, and moved up to Connecticut just before my 9th birthday. When my mom was registering me for school, she had to show them my birth certificate. Since New Mexican birth certificates have everything in both English and Spanish, the lady she gave it to actually asked if my mom had a green card or some other form of ID for me that proved I was an American, and not a Mexican citizen.

A buddy of mine dated, then married, a girl from New Mexico. For some reason I thought she was from Arizona and once asked her "what part of Arizona are you from?" She said "EVERYBODY thinks I'm from Arizona!" Now I understand why she got so irritated, she thinks everybody doesn't realize her state exists!

You do realize that each artist did the portion for their own country (i.e., a Polish artist would have done that one)
