(London Times) Obvious "The music is the aural equivalent of a malfunctioning dryer. The pubescent lyrics about big balls and lick sticks do a disservice to the word innuendo. So why honour AC/DC? Why not venerate Beavis and Butthead while we're at it?"   (timesonline.co.uk) divider line 87

Why honor them? Because they sell records, lots of records. Take, for instance, everything in the top 40, or top 100. Its all shiat, but those "artists" will be rewarded and honored because they made money for their respective company(sold lots of records). Music hasnt had to be good for a while now.

they've lasted.
They sold millions of albums in the 70's, 80's, 90's, and now. That alone is worthyf or espect.

Hey Beavis and Butthead was great.

I really loved Mr. Buzzcut

So, Beavis and Butt-head, I understand Mr. McVicker has made a little arrangement with you guys. Yeah, a little probation. You see, class, Beavis and Butt-head here are not allowed to laugh for a whole week. That's right, and if they do laugh, they'll be expelled, and they'll have to go to Hope High School where they'll get their asses kicked on a daily basis by all the other delinquents. Ha ha ha! Well, I was real glad to hear that, because this is sex education week. That's right, sex-ed week! We're gonna be talkin' about the PENIS! We'll be talkin' about the VAGINA! Do you think that's funny, Butt-head? Do you find it amusing that we'll be talkin' about the TESTICLES? Yes, we're also gonna be talkin' about VENEREAL DISEASE! SEXUAL INTERCOURSE! And we will definitely be spending a lot of time talking about MASTURBATION!

Beavis and Butthead critiquing Johnny Cash:

Johnny Cash, Delia's Gone

Butt-head: Uh...who is this dude? He looks familiar.
Beavis: Oh yeah! That's um, um, uh, what's his name, uh...Captain Kangaroo!
Butt-head: Captain what?
Beavis: You know, Captain Kangaroo! With Mr. Green Jeans and Magic Drawing Board. You know.

Beavis: Um...what kind of music is this?
Butt-head: Uh...I think this is like some kinda gangsta rap.

Butt-head: I bet this dude scores a lot because like, he wears black.
Beavis: Plus, he's like, old.

Johnny Cash: Kind of evil make me want to grab my submachine.
Beavis: Whoa! This is pretty violent.
Butt-head: Yeah. Enough is enough.
Johnny Cash: First time I shot her...
Butt-head: Whoa! He shouldn't have shot that chick. She's pretty hot.
Beavis: Yeah, really!
Butt-head: I would've taken her off his hands.
Beavis: Yeah, you know what he should have done? He should have fired some warning shots in the air, and that would have scared her away. And then I could score.
Butt-head: I guess if a chick has to choose between dying or like doing it with you, you might actually have a chance of scoring, Beavis.
Beavis: Yeah, I know! That's why I was suggesting it.

Well, she's got a point. AC/DC are sort of juvenile dick-wavers without a lot of complexity in either music or lyrics. On the other hand, this is rock and roll we're talking about, so if she's looking for subtle maturity and thoughtfulness, maybe she needs to STFU.

elvisaintdead [TotalFark] 2009-01-11 12:01:29 PM
Why not? Even one of AC/DC's songs or BnB's cartoon has already had way more influence than your pinchy little 'career' ever will.

AC/DC used to be about the only act that I would consider a hard rock comedy act. I mean, c'mon, when Bon was writing the lyrics... Big Balls, The Jack, even Dirty Deeds. Most of their songs were pretty funny. "Killed me when I saw the wet patch on her seat... Was it Coca-Cola?" Yeah, that's a straight-line parallel to the old Porky's movies. And if you judge them by that measure, they were great. Top of their genre. Funny music for horny young stoners.

Since Bon died... yeah, I dunno. Ya ever know someone who just got tired of who they actually are, and decided they were going to adopt some bullshiat persona? And then after a while, they just accept their own made-up past as history?

That's how I feel about 'em now. They've become a cartoon of themselves. The Scooby Doo guest shot can't be far behind. And Angus in that schoolboy uniform in his 50's is just sad.

crimsin23 [TotalFark] 2009-01-11 12:44:44 PM

Waah...I don't like them so they should not be acknowledged. Their fame and influence is not as important as my own opinion.

Hey Joan, you know what? I don't like Bob Dylan. But I respect the man's talent and influence. I do not listen to his music, but I acknowledge his talent.

And that article was more prepubescent and Beavis and Buttheadish than ANYthing AC/DC ever did.

Someone tell her that without AC/DC we might not have Beavis and Butthead. And come to think of it, they are worth praising.

And really, if you're the band responsible for Back in Black? You deserve tons of praise.

If you don't like AC/DC, you don't like rock music. Period.

Regardless of taste, if you put on AC/DC at a party, pretty much EVERYBODY will rock out to it. They're one of the few things that just about everybody around can agree is awesome. And those that don't probably organize their sock drawer for fun.

FlyingPig [TotalFark] 2009-01-11 02:40:16 PM
And also, Beavis and Butt-Head was great social satire if you actually paid attention. Those that think it was just about fart and boob jokes missed the point. It could be enjoyed on just that level, but it was also ridiculing the stupidity of a whole lot of social institutions. Mike Judge is not a stupid man.

Roto-Rot 2009-01-11 02:55:23 PM
Grumpy middle-aged women tend to like sophisticated music such as El Divo and Celine Dion (or whatever their friends listen to). This is because of their impeccable taste, independent thought process, and objective understanding of music. And singing about farking is okay as long as the music is soft.

I never much cared for AC/DC, seems like they've been playing the same song over and over since Back in Black. BUT--they never went the power ballad route, they always seem to be having fun, and millions of people love them. I have to give them credit for that.

They've sold 200 million albums all containing basically the same song over and over again in about 150 slightly different variations. That counts for something.

It's not that I don't like them, but AC/DC defines "overrated", imho. They do what little they do well, but they've made a 35 year career out of rewriting 3 songs: the "fast" one, the "not-so-fast" one, and the "not-so-fast" one that turns into the "fast" one. Add lyrics about "rocking", hot chicks, and/or your balls, shake well, reheat as many times as necessary, and serve loud.

People give the Stones crap for hanging around forever but love AC/DC... why fear songs that have more than 3 chords? I think it's because AC/DC's music is practically guaranteed not to induce any brain activity other than moving your head back and forth in rhythm. As long as alcohol is the recreational drug of choice on this planet AC/DC will have a career.

/ don't even have a sock drawer

Bauer [TotalFark] 2009-01-11 03:36:46 PM
as a drummer who was basically forced to play their songs...due to the 'masses' love for 'songs you can fuk and drink to'...

i share the blame in keeping their bullshiat alive and well.

-i'm sorry for that.

rock died a long time ago.

when aerosmith sold out to 'run dmc'...it was over.

only greed and lust for things unatainable, keep them going.

Well in AC/DC's defense, they have made decent music the past 15 years, the stones havent made a decent song since what, '81?

TV, telephone, penicillin...off the top of my head. For a small country (~5m people) we punch well above our weight in these things.

Musically: Franz Ferdinand, Glasvegas, Travis, Simple Minds, Idelwild, Teenage Fanclub, Snow Patrol, Primal Scream...and I didn't even mention The Proclaimers...

Funny you mention the Stones. Keith Richards said it the best: "AC/DC only plays one song, really, but they play it better than any band has ever played any song, ever."
