He spent 5 years and 15,000 hours writing a game without first assuring he'd have access to the necessary development software and the means of finishing the game?

Most appropriate tag of the day right here.

Dumbass tag a close second.

Yep. I guess he missed that "never go full retard" memo. I'll see he gets another copy of it.

I guess he should have targeted an open platform 5 years ago. Nintendo really has had a huge hate on for non-licensed game development that goes back to the NES days. Everybody that fiddles with developing software for the DS knows that going in.

An idiot that spends 8 hours a day, 365 days a year for five years on a project that has no hope in hell of ever paying a penny was insane when they started.

Because People in power are Stupid 2009-01-11 11:55:22 AM
Why must it be nintendo? Why not just release a free demo over the interweb and sell the full version for $1?

Don't get the urgency.

There are some videos on YouTube of Bob's Game. It's not really a game though since there isn't any gameplay.

I'm sure Nintendo's greatest worry is that people will start dying because of lack of access to their dev kit.

Won't someone think of the...um...retards?

Wow. Check out the guy's blog. He's nuts. It's easy to see why Nintendo didn't want to enter into a business relationship with the man.

The reqs for AD status are to facilitate Nintendo's business. Aka Money. NOT as your personal project enabler. Besides, there is homebrew. No comprende?

Why exactly is it that Nintendo won't sell him the development software anyway? It isn't as if Nintendo is some kind of golden chalice, they have released tons of low rent shiat that was obviously made by either idiots or insane people before.

Why stop now?

In his Youtube videos, he brags a lot about the amount of stuff in the game, and technical innovations like no lag time when going into new rooms - would this realistically fit on a DS cartridge and be playable with the hardware? (I have no idea, I'm asking.)

El_Swino: Wow. Check out the guy's blog. He's nuts. It's easy to see why Nintendo didn't want to enter into a business relationship with the man.

An actual quote from the blog:

I am far better than Miyamoto, Itoi, Kojima, Carmack, and Wright COMBINED.

I understand spending a ton of time on a project that you believe in, but you don't need to be a dick about it and talk shiat about the guys who created Mario, Zelda, Metal Gear, and the Sims just because Nintendo decided to ignore you. Faking your own death certainly doesn't give you much credibility with them either.

If the guy got together a development company and cranked out a few half-decent PC titles, he might have been able to be taken more seriously by Nintendo.

Besides, there are plenty of other venues where he could market his game, such as on Xbox Live arcade. Of course, he would need to port his code to run on those systems, but I have a feeling that he might not have thought his cunning plan all the way through and coded his game to run exclusively on the DS. Depending on how he coded it, it could take him several thousand more hours to port his game to a different platform.

I love a lot of Nintendo's stuff, but if they told me to fark off about a game I developed, I would just go somewhere else to have my game marketed. Doing a webcam sit-in that no one gives a shiat about is just a waste of time that could be used to do something else.

Reminds me of the guy on AtariAge who ported Gorf to the Atari Jaguar, and tried to get it published by Midway. They weren't interested in their terms(hand over source code, etc) so he keeps it all to himself, save for a few copies he sold. Then he gets pissed that a few sold copies traded hands for a lot of money, and he didn't get that money. The same forums I read about this now has discussion of porting other licensed games to the Jag, thus repeating the fail in the future.

Has anyone seen the tool-set fro NWN2? Looks like it uses some sort of C based language. I did well in Algebra so I figure I could make it work.

Anyone have any input on the best way to approach learning this language? Take a class? Just go for it? Make a friend who programs? The potential seems pretty cool if you are creative.

I feel bad for this guy, he seemed kinda mavricky (hea).

Scarrio 2009-01-11 01:10:57 PM
As someone who does the same kind of work in my spare time, what was with this guy? Sure he's a Nintendo fanboy, and when he realizes they're a company like any other he loses it?

There are so many other platforms he could bring that project to: XNA is beyond easy in most respects, and has a pretty healthy community. Or as other people have said, he could just plain old open it up on the homebrew circuit. Instead, he completely blows it.

And unfortunately, the game doesn't look half bad either. What a dumbass.

grinderman 2009-01-11 01:11:09 PM
Well, there's little else for him to do but change completely. At least he has that to look forward to. It would have been worse for him to march along with his disillusion for the 100 days, not get the Nintendo gig, shrug it off and still keep trying an ultimately doomed career path for years to come. Instead, he did it right; he failed spectacularly and with great finality.

Because the DS is such a haven for amazing games. I don't think Nintendo has ever said no to a license (no matter how terrible). Most of the DS titles are complete shiat but the ones that are worth it make the system worth owning.

strathmeyer 2009-01-11 01:18:24 PM
The_Time_Master: Why doesn't he just get a pirated copy of the Dev Kit?

He developed the game for five years with one. In order to release the game, he needs a license for a real one, which Nintendo doesn't care to give him because he's not a large corporation they can scam and manipulate.

Skooma 2009-01-11 01:19:09 PM
Seems like an interesting game and he put a lot of effort into the graphics, music, functionality, and interactions. No wonder the guy fake committed suicide, he put in 5 of the prime years of his life into this. Just for that I'd pay some dough to play it.

I think he should have finished his 100 day sit in and spent the entire time generating hype for his game. If he wouldn't of had a psychotic break down and faked his own death, I probably would have emailed Nintendo to give him a chance.

I find FinalDarkLord's comment (Jan 10th 2009 6:20pm) interesting, about how this could possibly just an elaborate troll -- especially coming after DoomSaber's comment about the different alternative development ideas 'Bob' claimed to be entertaining just before the fake suicide.

The same forums I read about this now has discussion of porting other licensed games to the Jag, thus repeating the fail in the future.

One of the gamer news sites I go to occasionally runs stories about David Braben who co-programmed the space exploration game Elite. Lately, Braben has gone on record biatching about the used games market and how developers don't get any money on the sales of used games. Even before that, he had a long history of dickery. Bottom line is that some developers tend to have too large of an ego.

My advice: Unless you simply want to do a labor of love to gamers for little to no profit, you need to figure out and implement a profitable business model if you intend to make any real money in the game industry. That includes remaining flexible with your options instead of relying on a single company to market your shiat merely because you are a rabid fanboy of their stuff. Even if the guy in TFA got his hands on a licensed dev kit from Nintendo, it still does not guarantee that his game would make any significant money. Especially if news of his douche temper tantrum were more widely known in the gaming community. On top of that, Nintendo could easily do a deliberately shiatty job marketing his game.
