Came here to say this. I haven't even been into metal since maybe the 9th grade, but that was pretty damn good.

Instrumentally it's awesome, but I can't get into growling/grunting vocals.

I like metal bands with singers who still SING, dammit.

Normally I agree with that but these guys are an exception for me. Musically the entire outfit is hyper-talented and the singer doesn't always use that style.

True. The riff to me sounds kind of like "For Whom the Bell Tolls" sped up about 80,000 times.

There are a lot of metal bands I would love EXCEPT for the vocals.

I clicked about eight other links of the band's videos, they all have a very similar vocal style. Care to point to an example?

I like grunting/growling or whatever it is they want to call it. My problem is, either do it well, or don't do it all. I love singing vocalists in metal, and I dig the guttural ultra low vocal growls of brutal death metal as well.

However, bands like Lamb of God have that annoying vocal "shouting" I can't accurately describe, but I'll refer to it as the "I'm so INSANE!!I've had enough of your shiat!!I'm gonna stand-up for myself! NOw I'm in your face and we're about to throw-down!" vocal style, that you see younger kids shout allong to while throwing awkward punches in the air.

Musically, the guys are talented, but I guess I'm not into the "modern" metal craze. As soon as I hear their riffs I think "Wow, this could have been good, instead it's kinda wimpy". (this coming from a guy who has no problem admitting he celebrates the catalogues of Lionel Richie and The Bee Gees"

I've never heard 'Cookie monster' vocals used to describe it before. Very good way to describe it. And it also ruins a lot of metal bands for me as well.

No they are not. Many bands that are better. Immolation, Wolves in the Throne Room, Ceremonial Castings. etc.

BigSnatch [TotalFark] 2009-01-11 12:26:11 PM
1. Lamb of God is no better than most Nu-Metal bands.

2. Most lead singers don't yell, they use their diaphragm. If they yelled, their voice would be gone in only a few years (think James Hetfield).

3. If you think that bands with harsh vocalists that grunt and growl are bad, then you have a very small sampling of real metal to listen to. But I'm sure you know everything about metal since you listened to some thrash bands in the 80s and have a few Iron Maiden and Judas Priest records.

4. Finally, because this thread needs some real metal in it:

Actually, I'm pretty big into current European thrash, prog, and goth-metal right now. I hate "death" and "gore" metal because it's just silly. But nice try.

Here's (Redneck. That's a better example of him following a clear melody. Yes it's deep and brooding but a certain departure from today's SHMHC. I think he sounds more like Phil Anselmo here than other songs.

As for this week's group of hater, we do this every week. Some weeks it's LoG others it's Dio others it's Pantera. We try to get a fairly wide sampling insofar as the genre allows. The only thing I avoid is Norwegian Death. That stuff's just pure evil.

I was under the impression that he was equating harsh vocals with Death Metal and something he called Gore Metal. I was wondering what Gore Metal was since he decided to use that term.

Lets see, when you what to create an authentic representation of anger/aggression....do you break out into song?

Really, the screaming/yelling/growling is a necessity in the heavier styles of metal. You can't find another vocal style that accompanies this level of aggression than what you already hear.

Plus, this is from 6 years ago. Lets listen to something current....
