Biden's visit to Afghanistan follows his trip to neighboring Pakistan, where he met with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

It's not everyday you get to meet all three triple point scrabble scores.

Is being in the Marine core like when you kill a marine, hollow him out, and climb inside to stave off freezing to death?

Good, They should send the whole Army over there, Frankly I don't want those losers coming back over here. They lost in Iraq and now have to spend the next few years in the asshole of the earth Afghanistan good luck guys: ) No, I shouldn't say "they" lost, they have been payed handsomly for pretending to be U.S. soldiers, more like the American and Iraqi people lost.

It's the crusades all over again, have to send these assholes somewhere. Too bad the kill ratio isn't higher.

This tends to be ignored. FTFA:Compounding the problem, the region is also the world's largest drug producing area, and hundreds of millions of dollars from the trade finance the insurgency.

Its kind of like the crusades, except replace Christiandom with Democratic Liberalism and the Islamic forces can no longer fight with any courage or resolve. Saladin would weeping if he was around to see this.

I wouldn't call the the tribal illiterates of Afghanistan the warrior elites of Islam but I see what you are trying to say. If the U.S. and NATO forces were not there they would probably be fighting each other as they always do. I just don't like that the government i was born into has launched such a shameful exercise in M.I.C. profitability and sacrificed our media and resources on the fear that some tribal peasants in a wasteland will somehow bring tribal Islamic customs to 1st world countries. It is rediculous.

I disagree, There are Trillion dollar armies sitting on Muslim land(In fact one of the poorest countries on earth) and yet the Resistance remains now and will remain when they leave. I am no fan of suicide bombings or targeting civilians and I think they are just as cowardly as using spy drone attacks, and in fact I denounce them both. In the future the U.S. will look back and wonder why they spent their most affluent years "bravely" battling peasents on the other side of the world especially when it is not the peasent countries they will have to worry about real soon.

The idea of the Ummah as a serious political idea died with the Ottoman empire. There really is no Islamic force in the political sense; it is simply a romantic idea that draws in a lot of support from the uneducated or unemployed in various parts of the world.

Unfortunately, the parties that employ the idea of pan-Islam have the advantage of the 21st century technology. Could al-qaeda deliver a nuclear device into Europe? I would say damn near impossible at this point, and I don't lose any sleep because of terrorism. Yet, on the other hand, 'injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere' has always been an axiom worth following. Afghanistan needs stability, jobs, rights etc. Having a developing economy there means a little bit of safety for us, but a whole lot of safety for them. The best example of action working might be the Korean war and the resulting division of those we helped and what they might have lived under.

Of course, all this is staked on the fact that I am not a moral relativist. Democratic liberalism is the best form of thought, and I have yet to see otherwise. Come to think of it, Saladin was a Kurd, and Islam didn't do much for his people. He might have agreed with me.

Sadly you are correct. The leaders of the Muslim Countries are shameful at this point(except Iran) but as you said a lot of those poor uneducated people are living in the past where people associate with Religion rather than Nation states. I see this trend continueing though so I wouldn't count out the Emergence of a new Islamic State. Al-Qaeda tried in Iraq, but trust me when I say this; they will not stop trying: )

Islam has a huge number of problems ATM(Allah guide us), and I personally think the True Monotheist in the more advanced countries are the future to bringing about change for the better on a global scale, not the tribal backwood sects.

I wouldn't say that the absence of a true nationalism within Islam is completely true. Turks, Kurds, Azeri, Pashtun, Tajik, Arab, etc. will trump pan-Islam when the idea of the Western enemy is no longer viable. Despite Nasr's failed nationalist movements, I think the unifying factor in the Middle East will be the modern Arab nationalism in Egypt, Jordan, Syria. It will be Islamic in form, but even the modern Muslim Brotherhood is becoming much more moderate in Egypt. Same rationale with Iran and Persian nationalism. It might even be brought about by Iranian influence in Arab politics in Iraq, despite the Shiite commonality, hard to say.

I am not saying that Islam will not be a guiding factor in the future, but that it will take a more relaxed form. Sharia law for an example will draw from unlikely sources to fit with modernity. Like when the British in India used 'anglo-Muhammadan Law' in colonial Sharia courts, but also differing madhahib communities that discuss legal frameworks for Islam in nationalist democracies.

Agent Orange... no crops of any kind... no income for the civilian population... increased poverty and starvation... more suffering and more reasons to hate the foreign troops. Maybe you should think of something else to say.

How about: Give the locals the means to turn poppies into morphine and let them sell it to the medical industry. Everybody profits.
