How many were Britons? I expect we'll hear that on the news later.
A ferry carry 250 people sank today, no britons were injured.

I'm guessing the official capacity for the ferry was 50 people.

It's probably the US's fault because we didn't warn them about this, and we didn't send aid in time.

A boat that can carry 250 people capsizing... in 7 foot waves... I dunno I think it would be hard for anyone to swim.

Wait, you mean to tell me people are more concerned with events that affect their community than those that happen on the opposite side of the planet?

NO WAY!

This is all George W. Bush's fault. He didn't protect us from the tidal waves.

FYI:
That's the equivalent of 25 Americans.
120 Americans die every day in traffic accidents.
That's the equivalent of 1,200 Indonesians.

Correct, this is 100% Republicans fault. Even when Obama Nationalizes all transportation and things an accident like this happens, it is the Republicans/Bush's fault.

So?

So where's your merciful allah, now?

I call tough shiat. They took out an overloaded, ill-maintained, old piece of crap ferry into storm seas and then somehow you are surprised when it capsizes? LOL.

I say Darwin is laughing his ass off.

You better hope that plenty more ferries carrying allah's faithful capsize. There's a shiatload of them.

Less than 20 comments before the political sniping started. Not bad.

Let's add a little religion to the mix, shall we?

Does it seem to anyone else that the great preponderance of "natural" disasters seem to happen in the predominantly Muslim areas of the world? And that the timing of said "natural" disasters always seems to coincide with some flare-up of tensions someplace else in the Muslim world?

Maybe Allah (Blessed be His name) is trying to tell the Muslim followers something?

/howzat?

If your going by weight, you are most likely correct. 25 Americans weigh about the same as 250 Indonesians.

I'm all for irreverent, politically incorrect humour, but why the hell do the Internet Tough Guys need to make this story into something more that it is?

250 people died in a tragic accident. That's all you need to know. Trying to bring racism into it or using it as a chance to bash Muslims or 'liberals' is just utter stupidity of the highest order.

Well it's difficult to be a hard-ass or a wise guy over the issue of third-World countries not having an enforcable Maritime Safety Policy, much better to demonstrate your massive intellect in some other way.

Most Indonesians don't know how to swim.

I lived there for a few years, and it was amazing how often these went down, and how often nobody or at least almost nobody lives even with life boats, life vests, etc.

I took helicopter survival courses when I was there so I could fly out to rigs I worked on. Anyway the Indonesian instructor would always give a little speech at the end that just because a helicopter goes down doesn't mean you are going to die, and if you stay clam and try to get out you will live. One time there were no Indonesians in the class and he didn't give the little speech. When I asked him about it he said that most Indonesians, even after the training will just figure there is nothing they can do while "bhoullies" (slang for white people, or any foreigner in indo) will try and get out. I don;t know how true it is, but he seemed to think so.

Overloading ferries is pretty common. I spent a month in Indonesia last year and took a couple of ferries on the east side of Sulawesi.

The first was pretty old. I couldn't stand up straight in it, and it was divided into upper and lower bunks. Four of us had to share the space equivalent to a queen-size bed and about 2 feet high (so you couldn't sit straight up, either). During the overnight trip, one of the locals I was traveling with told me about a similar ferry that had capsized a year before when someone went on the roof deck to get a better mobile signal. When he got a good signal, he let everyone know and dozens of people rushed to that side of the boat.

The other ferry I took was a jet-boat. After the first ferry I thought, "OK now this is traveling in style" until they loaded the passengers. The boat was designed for about 150 people, and there were at least 250 on it, plus tons of stuff they were hauling around. We ended up sitting in the aisle for the six-hour trip. At least they didn't allow smoking, which was a surprise.

As for the asshat "serves those damn Muslims right" comments; outside of the small Aceh area on Sumatra, Indonesia is very moderate and becomes even less traditional as you move east. You might want to crack open a book sometime and learn something about the world around you. Or, better yet, go there someday. It's a beautiful country with warm, caring people. Many are uneducated and yes you'd think they'd figure this ferry thing out by now, but Indonesians are very deferential to authority and have been at the mercy of corrupt and incompetent governments, police and military ever since the Dutch. If you haven't seen how things "should" work, you have no frame of reference to know that they can be different. It's going to take some time to set things on a better course, but they're getting there.

A little respect and assistance by the US can go a long way in Indonesia. And despite everything you hear about how "they all hate us," I was treated well by everyone I met. I can't wait to visit again.
