This guy is a master manipulator of his public image. I've never heard his music, but he is good at keeping his persona in the media.

He got in a car accident that almost killed him like 3-4 years ago, and has had a hard time recovering from that.

Besides that though, it seems to just be an accepted fact that D'angelo is just a lazy guy who borders on alcoholism and doesn't give a shiat about the music industry anymore. I hope that ain't the case, but even Questlove hinted at it a couple times.
