Is there any chance he won't win either way?

Flipping parties to hold onto your power worked wonders for Lieberman's image.

As a NYC Dem, he's got my vote regardless of what party he runs under.

Sure he's a grandstanding blowhard, but most politicians are. He's been relatively fiscally prudent, and the city would be in tougher shape right now if someone else had been in charge, IMO.

He's a better choice for the future of the city than some hyperliberal that the Dems are likely to put on the table.

Poopstain, we clearly disagree on our opinions of Bloomy, but I have to say you have one of the most entertaining bios on Fark.

The problem is that he violates federal law to make points with his gun grabbing buddies:

More than three months after Mayor Bloomberg's announcement that he had sent private investigators into five states to catch gun dealers making illegal sales, he is refusing to turn over the evidence they've gathered to the federal agency that investigates illegal guns.
...
Because the investigators are private citizens, they would have broken the law if they actually made straw purchases or intentionally filled in incorrect information on the gun licensing forms. Also, some states have stringent rules about hidden video equipment. Law enforcement sources said it is unlikely the investigators would be prosecuted, but that the ATF was sending City Hall a message to stay off its turf.

Bloomberg, City Stall on Releasing Evidence Regarding Illegal Guns

If you encourage and pay people to break federal firearms laws, isn't that grounds for a conspiracy charge?

Serious hypothetical scenario. Maybe they did break the law, but that's not what the article says.

You didn't read the whole thing:

The city won't turn over the evidence, which includes videotapes of gun dealers allowing so-called straw purchases of guns, until the ATF signs an evidence-sharing agreement that would prohibit the agency from "publicly disclosing evidence without notice and consent from the city," the mayor's criminal justice coordinator, John Feinblatt, said.

The only way for them to know if the is actually a straw purchase going on is if they were the ones making the straw purchase.

Even the ATF told them to stop it because they were violating the law:

New York Daily News
Feds shoot down Mike's gun suit
BY MICHAEL SAUL
DAILY NEWS CITY HALL BUREAU CHIEF
Thursday, February 8th, 2007

The federal government will not file criminal charges against any of the 15 out-of-state gun dealers accused by Mayor Bloomberg in a federal lawsuit of selling guns illegally, the Daily News has learned.

In a stern rebuke to the city's high-profile crusade against illegal guns, the feds warned the Bloomberg administration that it could face "potential legal liabilities" if it continues to conduct sting operations that fall within the jurisdiction of federal agents.

Bloomberg announced the filing of a federal lawsuit last May against 15 gun dealers, who he lambasted as the "worst of the worst." The city later filed a similar lawsuit against another 12 dealers.

In both cases, the city sent private investigators to gun dealers and secretly videotaped them making what Bloomberg called illegal "straw purchases."

A "straw purchase" refers to when an individual talks with a store clerk about purchasing a gun, but then gets another person to fill out the required federal forms and undergo the mandatory background check.

According to a letter sent to City Hall, the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and various U.S. attorneys' offices have determined the city's findings against the 15 dealers "do not rise to a level that would support a criminal prosecution."

The letter - sent Tuesday by Michael Battle, director of the
executive office for United States Attorneys at the Department of
Justice - also scolded City Hall for engaging in sting operations
involving persons "without proper law enforcement authority," saying that could put the city in legal jeopardy.
Battle added that City Hall could "unintentionally interrupt or jeopardize" criminal probes.

Asked if the Bloomberg administration plans to stop conducting the sting operations, Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler said, "Not necessarily."

"The city hasn't violated any laws," Skyler said defiantly, adding that the city will continue to pursue its civil lawsuits against the gun dealers.

In other words, the ATF told them to stop making straw purchases or they would file federal criminal charges.

PoopStain: fark this motherfarker. He's a goddamn liberal fascist, not a republican. He's addicted to new taxes, oppressive edicts, and his own voice. Let the farking Democrats have him. He's not good for NY city in the long run, and there's no reason to early invest in the blowback now.

He's also a douchebag.

Are you having nicotine withdrawl crankiness because he won't let you smoke?

Somehow, I think that finishes like "Magpul Flat Dark Earth" and "Advanced Tiger Stripe Brown" would just be kind of inappropriate on my baby:

I'll stick to traditional bluing and browning, thanks though.

You should see the plum brown job my dad did on his Baker Rifle. Talk about deep purple! It's a thumper, too: .62" caliber. Mine is only .54".

By the way, due to "unprecedented increase in demand", the ATF is running out of form 4473, and it is allowing FFL's to photocopy it as a temporary measure.

Form 4473, as anyone who has watched "Red Dawn" knows, is the form that gun dealers must use to record individual gun sales.

I wonder what a tacticooled-out black powder rifle looks like. On second thought, maybe I don't want to see that.

Sounds like your dad has one hell of a gun. That thing must kick hard.

I've always liked your "don't tread on me pic."

Fish in a Barrel, checks profile.....woah.....nice collection.

That's just *WRONG*.

I likes me the modern stuff too, I've owned an AR-15 in the past, but new is new and old is old and never the twain shall meet.

Sounds like your dad has one hell of a gun. That thing must kick hard.

Shoves more than kicks.

He built my gun, and he's got a bunch of others he's built. Hell, the first blackpowder gun I ever shot was a Hawken he had made (mostly from scratch) back in the early 1970's.

I've always liked your "don't tread on me pic."

That flag hangs on my wall at work now. On the opposite wall is a 13 star American flag. It's easier for people to take the message of the first one if they think it's related to history.

My biggest problem with Bloomberg is that he is, essentially, a failure. Every major thing he has attempted to accomplish hasn't worked out. Jets Stadium on the west side, Olympics, rebuilding of the public school system, etc. He has essentially floated by because his administration has faced no real turmoil. And now, going into one of the hardest time in recent history, he's mired by the stench of corruption in his handling of the term limits that would otherwise have prevented him from running.

He had a terrible reputation as a trader, he had a terrible reputation as a business man and now he's managed to prove the adage about a million dollars in ink.
