I loves me some Zeppelin... it is a damn shame they stole from Muddy Waters. And others. But I still like 'em.

Yeah, they took a plain burger and made a Wendy's Baconater out of it.

Damn shame bout that.

I'm just saying. Last year when they played live, they did 3 Presence songs.

is stolen from the 17th Century.

The traditional version kicks ass too.

Thats a very good analogy, actually... I like Zeppelin for the most part, but when they do full-on lifts ("The Lemon Song") that is when I cannot stand Robert Plant (in comparison to Muddy, Wolf, or any of the other greats) and even Page get on my nerves and I have to turn it off.

Bonham, on the other hand, is ALWAYS on it.

I wasn't going to be the one to say it, so I'm glad someone did. "Achilles' Last Stand" is my all-time favourite Zep piece. I recently found out that it's also Page's favourite.

I never tire of his muddy, sloppy, fatfingered imitations of the great blues men. You are awesome Jimmy. Happy birthday!

What a great way to start the day.

Man, that yelping by Plant in the very beginning is intolerable. Never liked that 'dueling' stuff with Page's guitar. It's in way too many of their live recordings.

It's great when he sings it straight, however.
(Shaun Ryder/Black Grape approves, etc.)

Not as over-rated as a "Pat McGroin"-type name joke.

Gangway Fathead: Presence is an underrated album.

I remember when Presence came out and I was pretty unhappy with it (same goes for In Through the Out Door). I still can't listen to those two albums. Zep III was the second record I bought with my own money and it's still my favorite of the bunch.

I used to work with a guy who was at this show (MSG in '73). He said he'd never seen more dope in one place in his life, before or since.

When they finally released a decent live CD a few years ago I was really blown away. The version of Over the Hills and Far Away starts off slow and sorta quiet, but when the band kicks in, it's sounds like an explosion. (new window - turn it up to 11)

I think you're thinking of "Gallows Pole" which has it's roots from a traditional folk song.

Happy birthday Mr. Page!

I only recently became aware of The album Presence and its influence on Rush and similar bands is astounding. Love Presence, hate Rush.

there would be no Zep without Jimmy

a brillant soloist

created massive riffs

knew how to layer mulitple guitar tracks and parts expertly
giving each its own place and tone - a master -

III is the one LZ album I'm ashamed to say I haven't been able to get into. I know it's a favorite of many. Houses is still my favorite (so obvious, I know). Wish I had ever seen them.

I don't think it's a shame at all; they lifted material from others and made their own statement with it. What, nobody has ever done that before? Music is meant to be interpreted - there's nothing wrong with Zep's covers of classic blues, and people should stop making such a big deal about it. The plain burger -> Baconator comparison is right on the mark. Besides, I think their many, many brilliant original works ably attest to their skills and talent, whether you like the covers or not.

Thanks for the post subby - good stuff.

No, "Night Flight" is on Physical Graffiti. Terrific, underplayed song; I love the energy of it.

Achilles Last Stand is my all time favorite song. I had a magazine the tabulated both guitar and bass. It had more overdubs than any Zeppelin song at seven. The drums kick my ass every time. There's no real melody or hook to it either, which makes it sound very different too.

DeltaX: I think you're thinking of "Gallows Pole" which has it's roots from a traditional folk song.

No. Over The Hills and Far Away is a quite famous traditional English song. But only the opening acoustic guitar bit in the Zep song bears any resemblance to it (other than the title of course).

i really like jimmy page, i like his guitar playing, his tone, the way he produced the zep records.

but he's kinda rather sloppy sometimes.

I prefer acoustic Zeppelin. They were better folkies than they were blues burglars.

And now a thousand years.....betweeeeeen

I agree, I always thought at first it was because he was tired. As I heard that the lads didn't like the Madison Square Garden shows used in the movie because it was late in the tour and they were getting burned out. But now from the stories I heard later I would blame the heroin. Here is a clip from 1983. I don't think he is completely straight.

That's a big part of his charm. You'd never hear those kinds of mistakes on today's rock recordings, which in my opinion is a big reason rock has lost so much of its character. "Perfect" players are overrated, and pristine recordings kind of miss the point when it comes to rock music.

Jimmy's favorite song (new window), and probably the best version of it without studio or live tricks.
