~2011...

"But sir, the Hoosiers are starving"

"Let them eat sugar cream pie"

Never eaten a sugar cream pie -- nor heard of one. If Indiana needs an offical pie it should be the jumbo pork tenderloin.

This is done in legislatures all across the country every year. What happens is some teacher does the "How a bill becomes a law" class by having her class actually write a bill, and getting the local politician to ram it through the house. No legislator is going to go against a classroom full of kids just because it's pointless, and the time taken doesn't really amount to much.

There's no harm here. your state has a unique product, species or something else, it's not wrong to want to recognize it. We're going to be in financial hardship for a good long time - even if the overall economy recovers, individual states and industries will be hurting for a while. If we remove all levity from government, we risk making it into a governing machine, instead of a group of people.

If I were to eat a last meal, it would be a giant breaded pork tenderloin sandwich with a slice of sugar cream pie (although we just called it cream pie). Maybe some of that broccoli salad with the raisins. And ambrosia.

I was born and raised in Indiana. And never in my life have I even heard of "Sugar Cream Pie".

Ever.

Like all things with three names, Sugar Cream Pie is completely fictitious.

Odd to learn so many people have never heard of it, I'm from Indiana and always thought this was a staple of "holiday food."

It's ok, but a little on the insanely sweet side. Mom always gets them store-bought since the recipe is incredibly complicated from what I've read.

Looks pretty easy --- a pie for when settlers were out of fruit in midwinter...you even mix it with your fingers...

Pastry for 9-inch one crust pie
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups granulated pure cane sugar
1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream, room temperature
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Whole nutmeg

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Prepare pie pastry.

Place flour and sugar in the unbaked pie shell. Add cream and mix well using your fingers to slowly mix the dry and liquid ingredients (the prevent the cream from whipping). Add vanilla extract and continue stirring with fingers. Sprinkle with freshly grated nutmeg.

Bake 10 minutes; reduce heat to 325 degrees F. and continue baking for approximately 45 to 55 minutes. Center will appear soft, but pie will set up as it cools. Do not over bake. Remove from oven.
