Holy fark, if I had the HD space I'd download all that.

In other news, The Slip doesn't suck.

You can tell you're a good band when you can give your stuff away for whatever you want to pay and still make money.

I'm not even that much of a NIN fan and I still find this pretty farking cool. That article was really interesting too, a testament to fan loyalty.

I have Comcast with a high speed connection and a bandwidth cap of 250Gigs/month, so I am getting a kick out of these replies.

Yeah, remember all those "NO ONE WHO DOESN'T PIRATE MUSIC WILL RUN INTO THAT CAP" idiots when this was announced?

Here is a perfectly legal download that will almost put you at double that space. Fark Comcast.

aww damn, i have the hdd space but not the bandwidth :(

at 65Gig a month it is going to take a while.

See, this is where you are wrong. We here at Comcast firmly believe that free trade can never be "gratis." A man is only as worthy as his skill in business; thus, to lower the fine art of music to drug filled rantings of Woodstock and Cory Doctorow may be a high ideal, but it is a poor measure of the man.

More precisely, if we believe that some services are to be expected values, we will come to believe all services are such. This virus has already taken hold in these great United States. Welfare, Medicare, progressive taxation, and now- the absolute worst platitude yet- customer service coupled with a worthy product; well, let me say this, Comcast, GM, Ford, HP, Disney, The Airlines, and the Republican party have not worked tirelessly for 60 years to give you a product worth buying, we have worked to give you a product that you will buy, that you must buy, that with the swipe of a card, the monthly calling of debt, the dull pain in your right cheek from a mountain of plastic reverberates your very soul and speaks to your inner consumer.

Let me repeat- music is not a purpose, a voice, a harmonious message- it is a 3 minute reminder that there is no "soul", "you", or "I"; rather, there is iPod, iPhone, my life, my computer, myspace, Facebook, friending (not friends), textbooks- not texts, schools- not education, and Fark- not news.

This is extremely cool. Especially since my band is going to be releasing our first album in a similar pay-what-you-want format as Ghosts.

Just wait until the many, many different versions of those three shows that claim to be the best one hit the torrents, and dl some of those.

When a major label pats you enthusiastically on the back what they are actually doing is dislodging your colon and causing it to prolapse. Then they stand on it so you can't walk away.

This is incredible. Trent Reznor's the prime example of how to successfully build and strengthen a hardcore fanbase.

Anybody remember back when you heard "sure, SMALL bands can give away stuff to get publicity, but that'd never work for actual musicians? Our business model of raping and pillaging customers will work just fine, thankj00 very much!"

TheUltimateLink 2009-01-08 07:10:27 AM
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why NIN will always be better than your favorite band, no matter how much you whine.

Go Fast Turn Left [TotalFark] 2009-01-08 08:04:44 AM
Not a Nine Inch Nails fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I've always had the utmost respect for Trent Reznor and how he's treated his fans. There are a LOT of people who could learn a thing or two from him.

Teddy Hopper 2009-01-08 08:52:30 AM
Wow. I saw this headline and figured this would be a thread bashing NIN. Glad it is not. I love that music is moving in an open source direction. If we have less wankers playing music for the sole purpose of becoming rich rock stars/pop divas and more people making music and distribting it because they love it, we're gonna have much more much better music.

the light show on that last tour was phenomenal. is anyone else doing anything like that?

Rev. Skarekroe [TotalFark] 2009-01-08 08:58:05 AM
Teddy Hopper: the light show on that last tour was phenomenal. is anyone else doing anything like that?

Not that I know of. I've said it before, but Trent's picked up the torch that Pink Floyd dropped in terms of light shows.

sonicfluid 2009-01-08 09:46:15 AM
YAY! I finally get to say it - I submitted this with a better headline. And within about 30 seconds of the announcement being made on nin.com. Does anyone know if fark has a support group for unfortunate souls like me?

Oh yea, and NIN rules my universe :-D

LeilaK [TotalFark] 2009-01-08 09:57:25 AM
TR said this is probably the last show he's doing on this scale--the next shows will be stripped down. All the tech is labor intensive and expensive (and he's the one footing the bill), and attendance wasn't as hoped. A real shame, as "Lights in the Sky" was absolutely the best live show I've ever seen. Even my husband, who doesn't like NIN, was very impressed.

//Looking forward to fanvid

Not a fan of his music, but you gotta admire when someone is that dedicated to their fans. He's doing it the way you should be, an6d the way hopefully more artists will be doing it in the future.

Keep in mind he's also financially able to do these things. A lot of other artists who are new don't have anywhere near the amount of resources.

Reznor was the poster child for "major label sell-out" early in his career. He may have been, but he's also done a lot more to give back to the scene than many other artists in his position.

The guy's made a fortune, has a great business sense and knows what fans want. I just wish most of his fans weren't a bunch of NiNnies. :p

The kid farkers are amusing. They never pay actual money for anything anyway and lecture about business models.

I believe it's in 3 parts, none of which would fit on a 30gb hd even if you deleted everything else on there. Your best bet will be to check youtube as people will be creating tons of short clips using the footage.

Awesome news, Trent is the man.

I'm planning to do the same style free release as The Slip with my self-recorded album, and this kind of news makes me excited to do it.

I have, they either hadn't or had forgotten.

And, what?

Kids are incredibly easy and dumb spenders. Always have been. If you're failing to get KIDS to give you money, you're doing it wrong.

assegai: I thought he was free of all contracts?

I would assume that there would be rights issues for music that was released while under contract with previous labels.
