our cat is named Designer Kitty. he was named by my husband's ex from before we met, because the all-black kitten went well with her all-black designer furniture.

we usually just call him "Kitty" or "Guy" but it doesn't matter any more because he's gone completely deaf. he's 18 and hyperthyroid. still eats like a pig and poops like a champion (sadly, not in his box too often, but usually on the linoleum).

TypoFlyspray 2009-01-07 03:07:10 PM
Mine:
Grey Tabby - Dustbunny
Siamese - Cobweb
Mackerel Tabby - Michael Michael Motorcycle (named after a guy I knew when I was like 5)
Dead Mackerel Tabby - Matilda the Hun
Grey & White Megacat - Angel (Came with the name)

(Wanted to do Silverfish and Mildew to keep the filth theme going, but the Mrs. wasn't having it. Her cats tend to be named "Kitty", so I usurped the naming rights.)

Next Female Cat: Miss Thang.

Dog: Thor, the Thunderpuppy (a Norwegian Elkhound. Should have gone with Loki instead, then maybe he wouldn't be afraid of thunderstorms.)

That doesn't bother me. If the kids want to call the dog "Pizza", what's the big deal? He'll probably end up with a bunch of nicknames later (as has been evidenced by other comments) and it becomes a slightly embarrassing story you can tell about your kids. It's not like their naming their new brother and sister "Pizza".

When we adopt cats in my family, we try to keep the cat names as close to the shelter names as possible to they'll still recognize the sound of us calling them.

My cat's shelter name was "Makyla" (Ma-KYE-luh) so I just shortened it to Mac.

and she comes every time I call her.

Three boy monsters with silly names...

The first is Bakemono. His name is Japanese for "monster" because he is one. He is a longhaired black and gray tabby cat.

The second, a stray who adopted us, is Fakemono. He looked enough like Bakemono to trick us into letting him in. Then he just kinda stayed.

The third, another stray trying to move in, is Spotsamono. He looks like Bakemono...only with spots instead of stripes.

When I was young, my family rescued a grey cat. We were all alergic to it and decided it really needed to go back to the humane society. Then we learned that a woman down the street placed cats for people and did all sorts of background checks, which made us relieved because we really loved that cat. Except my brother.

When we dropped off the cat, my brother told the lady that the cat's name was "Dog Head". She said, "That is an interesting name!"

When I said goodbye to the cat, I noticed that my brother had purchased a pink collar tag and had "Dog Head" etched on it. He would always go that extra mile.

We had a cat named, "Edward Scissorclaws" (ya, rly!), who recently passed away at the ripe old age of 18 (or so -- he was a stray that adopted us). When he was younger, he could accidentally and unintentionally slice open your appendages like you wouldn't believe. He was also diabetic for the last four years, and we had to give him insulin shots twice a day.

We miss that poo generator.

Cats (7): Sir Reginald Duke of Chutney (Reggie for short - name stolen from Disney's Robinhood), Bascal, Fidget, Furious, Zoom-Zoom, Shmoo and Boney Moroney

Dog: B'Dog (Buh Dog)

Cats from the past: Pergl, Jebus, Dinsdale, Amalie, Sinclair, Zephyr, Flower, Zig Zag, Krunk, Norben, Thurman Murman, Igor, Fancy, Clancy, Virgil, Greasy, Iggy, Chim-Chim, Hogarth, Edwina, Thomas, Jerry, Smokey. There are more, but I am drawing a blank. My Husband and I rescue cats and find them homes. The seven from above are mine - the rest are rescues I was able to find homes for.

We also have a feral cat we call Yellow Kitty.

We have four cats. Gumby's an orange tabby, lacking all but three teeth. Gem is a mean gray kitty (well, mean to the other cats; usually nice to us). Wrecks and Skylar are the two gray kittens of the family (Wrecks used to be Rex, but his name was changed due to his habit of wrecking everything; Skylar was named by one of my sisters).

Gumby, unfortunately, went from 17 pounds last December to 10 pounds this December. The docs can't pinpoint why the exact weight loss, but since his bloodwork has all come back normal, they're leaning towards lymphoma. The only way to be sure is to do a biopsy, but a) we're poor and can't afford it, b) it sounds painful, and we don't want to put him through it and c) he's old (somewhere between 13 and 16 at last guess). In the meantime, he's not eating right (he'll eat kitty treats, but sticks his nose up at wet food or tuna), he's missing the litterbox often when he pees, and he's getting scrawny. It breaks my heart to see my Gumby-man like this, but...what can I do?

I have two hand-me-down cats. One is a Maine coon named Pablo; the other is a huge orange cat named Newton. My neighbors used to have a cat that went by the name of Kittyface. Now they have a few cats: Abby, Simba, Muffs, and (depending who you ask) Blue or Neenee. Blue kicks ass, and I just refer to her as Ninja Cat since she will scale a stockade fence and hop up on the roof with no effort. While on the roof she'll meow so people notice her. (she also has the cutest chirp for a cat that I've heard)

Galactica Actual: We have a cat named Puck because he is a mischeivious little elf. We often call him other things though, which I shan't reproduce here, except for "The Puckster."

Incidentally he is small and black and also resembles a hockey or espresso puck. But it's exactly that: incidental.

We have a little rat terrier dog named 'Puck' because she was meant for the big dogs to kick around. Her main nickname is 'Puckula' for the way she bears her teeth and snarls when they are playfighting.

Cats are Mouse (calico manx), Pogo (wildcat tabby) and Mitzi (orange tabby), all female. We're thinking about keeping a black tomcat kitten we've preliminarily named 'Bear.'

/we have a zoo too .. there are more dogs
//our one year old daughter calls Puck 'kitty' because she is the same size as the cats.

The naming of cats is a difficult matter, It's just not one of your holiday games; You may think at first that I am mad as a hatter, When I tell you that each cat's got three different names. See, they got their ordinary name and then they got their fancy name. And that makes two names, doesn't it? And now it's got a third name. Can either of you two guess what that third name is? Come on! Above and beyond, there's one name that's left over, and this is the name you never will guess. The name that no human research can discover, but the cat itself knows, and never will confess."

Hmm, I currently have 6 cats residing with me, including a mom and 2 of her kittens I rescued last August:

Dinah, my 14 year old Tortie; daughter named her after Alice's cat in "Alice in Wonderland"
Bonnie, almost 11 years, gray & white; a stray named after Bonnie Parker because she was so hard to capture
Sadie, 5 yr old seal point Ragdoll; came as a rescue, already named - she's called Sadie the Poopin' Machine, as she has some litter box issues
Alice, 2 yr old black & white mom; she kept trying to escape my bathroom through the mirror, hence; Alice
Buddy, 6 month old b&w kitten; he's just so friendly!
Eboni, 6 month old black kitten, with a white patch on chest; Tropical Storm Faye passed through a few days after I rescued Alice & her brood (they were only 4 wks old), and I kept seeing a pretty, black meteorologist named Eboni Deion (sp?) on the Weather Channel a lot that week....

I know, boring, and TMI...

Ezme - what did I miss about that name?

Since I'm posting again anyway. My neighbors in Fargo had two black cats that had been left by previous renters. One was called NotThere and the other Marshall. You never saw NotThere until he was already running past you in the other direction. Marshall had a white spot in the middle of his chest that looked almost like a star. Unlike NotThere he would often sit on the steps, be talkative and just in general hang out keeping watch on the neighborhood.

Black persian with a white patch on her chest named Guinness. First thing I thought of when I adopted her was that if I stuffed her in a 2-liter beer mug, she'd pretty much resemble a Guinness.

She's more like a dog than a cat, though. Waiting at the door for me when I get home from work. Then follows me to the bedroom, while I get changed. Then follows me everywhere else in the house. She'll come when I call her, but not if anyone else does.

My cat's name is Mufasa. Not terribly original, but I give him a lion cut every summer so that he can be king of the jungle and call him "Mu" for short. I think people think I'm saying "Moo", but that's funny, too.

HA HA Goodfella ! My Zoom-Zoom is the same way ! I found him asleep on the back of the couch with his two front paws above his head still stuck in the curtains. I also found him asleep in the middle of the floor - again with his front paws stuck in the curtains - he was able to pull them off the wall, but not retract his claws. We think he is a little slow as well - but as you said, great for entertainment purposes. White with blue eyes - so he is deaf as a post. We call him our short-bus-riding kitty.

I have two cats I got this year who's names totally beat out any of the winners. I have "Domo Arigato Senior El Gato or Das Kitten for short" and my all black kitten "Lucy Furr Obama Von Satan".

The Vet was tons of fun with Das,
Vet: Well that's a mouth full, I'm just going to put down "Das Kitten:
Me: That's not her name, her full name needs to be on the paper work.
Vet: There is that better?
Me: You forgot "for short" it is vitally important they you get her full name on this paper work.
Vet: It's just for our files we really don't need all that on here.
Me: if you want to be my cats vet you do.

Friend gave me her cat. Name's Luna.
I asked her "What kind of name is that?"
She said "You know, from Sailor Moon?! The Anime?!" Never watched the show.
Talking to one of my other buddies and I tell him I have a cat now and her name is Luna.
He said "Why did you name your cat after Sailor Moon & before you ask how I know that name is from Sailor Moon, I used to watch Sailor Moon...and I have a tattoo of one of them."

/Luna decided to entertain me this morning by attempting to jump onto the 1-inch windowsill & pulled a faceplant into the window.

ok here's your cheesy, love story + cats = how we came up with our cats names...

While living in Colorado, I proposed to my wife at the Eagle Valley Humane Society's Martini Ball. A big, formal event, to raise money. When the Vail Daily did a write up on the event and humane society, they featured two very tiny stray kittens that were dropped off just that week. A few weeks after she accepted my proposal, she figured she would surprise me and adopt those cats from the article. Since it was at the Martini Ball, we named our cats...cosmo (for cosmopolitan) and Marti (for martini).

/cheesy, i know
//still married, though!
///and both cats are a healthy 22 pounds!

Names of cats I have owned:

Serta aka "Serta Perta" aka "Poopy" (recently deceased...sigh)
Sealy aka "Tinky" aka "Tinks" aka "Tinkerbell"
Teddy aka "Teddy Bear" aka "Teddy Bear Byron" aka "Teddy Grahams" aka "Honey Grahams" aka "R2D2" aka "Squeeky"

Serta and Sealy were twin brothers from a stray litter that was born in a mattress, hence the awesomely appropriate names.

Teddy is a new buddy for Sealy, and his shelter name was Byron. His coat and pleasant demeanor account for the Teddy / graham cracker / honey references. The hilarious noises he makes account for R2D2 and Squeeky.

Wierd names of cats I have known but not owned:

Gooby aka "Goober" aka "Goo"
Boocat aka "Boo" aka "Booberry" aka "Boobird"
Claus (sounds like "claws")
Toulouse aka "Toulouse-Letrec"
Sambo aka "Sam" (yes, this is a black cat)
Elron
Crazy Mama

Cat owners: I can't get my new kitty to pee in the litterbox. Right now we're trying to leave him in the room with the litter box in it with the door closed (and some water and food when overnight) but everytime he comes out he tries to pee on the carpet. Any tips please? He's driving us nuts!

FlyingGeek 2009-01-07 05:45:27 PM
Final goofy cat name thought: I haven't yet known a cat owner that didn't have several names for each of their cats. Usually, there was an official one that was listed with the vet, and at least two or three more (usually quite silly or sweet) that resulted from the serious brain damage that close proximity to cats inevitably causes (see the XKCD comic displayed earlier in this thread.)

Is he "new" or "new to you"? As in, is he an older cat or a kitten? If he's an older cat, is he neutered?

Light Fuse Get Away,

There are several factors that I am aware of that may make a difference:

1. The proximity of the litterbox to their food and water.
2. The litterbox itself
3. The litter itself

First, cats do not like having their litter box anywhere NEAR their food and water. If you have everything in the same room, put the litter as far away from the food and water as possible, and also away from favorite sleeping spots, etc.

Secondly, cats commonly do NOT like fully enclosed/covered litter boxes, primarily because the odors are concentrated. Cats don't like the smell any more than we do. If you aren't already using one, try a simple open litter box, and clean it often. Side note: If you have multiple cats, you may need multiple litter boxes. Some cats just won't go where others have gone before, so to speak.

Finally, some cats are very finicky about litter, and can be very resistant to change if they are already used to one type. You may have to try many different types. If you got the cat from a shelter, ask the shelter what they used...it may be as simple as using what the shelter used, and if you have a different personal preference, gradually replacing the old style with whatever you prefer. If your cat doesn't like the common scoopable/clumping clay stuff, try something with a different texture: pine pellets, newspaper pellets, etc. Cats sometimes also resist heavily perfumed litter, so if that is the case, try something unscented. Also, always make sure that there is enough litter in the box that the cat can bury their waste.

Other thoughts:

If they aren't already, definitely have your cat spayed or neutered, especially if they are male. Male cats (and sometimes females) pee to mark territory (although they usually spray, not just pee.) Neutering reduces this instinct, usually to the point where they won't do it anymore.

Make sure your cat is healthy and has no potential conditions that might be contributing to the behavior. I have a cat who is disposed to developing crystals in his urinary tract / kidneys. In the past, when he developed blockages, it became very painful for him to pee. As a result, he would avoid the litter box (probably associating it with pain,) and would pee elsewhere.

Light Fuse Get Away,

Also, as your kitty is only eight weeks old, make sure he can get in and out of the litterbox easily. Small kittens may have a hard time if the tray is too deep, and may decide "hell with it" instead.

(I actually have the opposite problem: one of my kitties is very tall, and he'll end up kicking all the litter out of the box attempting to bury his offerings.)

We use Yesterday's News newspaper pellets for litter in an open box which we clean more or less every time we manages to go in there. His food is in there but not too close to the box...

The litter box is plenty easy for him to get in; he can jump up on our bed no problem and he has gone in the litterbox on his own before, it's just not a constant thing, unfortunately.

Right now we're trying to leave him in the room with the litter box in it with the door closed (and some water and food when overnight) but everytime he comes out he tries to pee on the carpet. Any tips please? He's driving us nuts!

He doesn't like the litterbox and is telling you so the only way he can.

First, you want to dump the litter you're currently using and clean the box out...THOROUGHLY...with an enzyme destroying cleaner...bleach won't work (you will also need to do this with the spots on the carpet to kill any odor-causing bacteria...they can smell it and it draws them back to it as an "OK to pee here" spot).

You might also consider getting a different box...maybe a larger one?
F'rinstance, my guys like having one that allows them to turn around a time or two and choose their exact spot, and they farkin' hate the little hood that came with it...so we don't use it.

Yeah, the open litterbox is unsightly...but the cat doots and puddles on the floor are worse, so the hood stays OFF.

Then you might want to try this...
Cat Attract...a lot of people on another forum swear by it.
Good luck!

Did the previous owners have cats that peed on the carpet? Dump a load of white vinegar on the spots where he pees. The smell will be awful for a while but it goes away, and hopefully kitty will learn those are not pee-spots. Also you might try blotting up a pee-stain with some paper towels and putting them in his litterbox so it smells like the toilet to him. No expert, these are just my suggestions.

ObscureNameHere: I always wanted a turtle just so I could name it "Hopesprings".

When someone asked "What's that?", I could say:

"Hopesprings a turtle."

Friend of mine had two geckos...they were dubbed "Art" and "Roman".
You guessed it..."Art Gecko" and "Gecko Roman".
Also named his grass snake "Rufus"...which cracked me up exceedingly.

The name Rufus means Red One...and the most noticeable thing about a grass snake isn't just his lack of legs...

I used to have a cat named Kitsophrenic. That is all.

2 Dogs:
Snoopy - He came prenamed. He is NOT a beagle. He does snoop though.
Mandy, aka Miranda, Princess of Hope. Her first owner got her when she (the owner) had cancer and named her for her hope that she would get better. Sadly, the hope worked for the dog, but not the owner. She is a sweet and silly dog. She is a Papillon. 10 lbs of stupid. If her ball falls under a blanket, it is lost forever.

2 Cats:
Louise - A tabby. Her sister was Thelma. She is loving and fat and relatively normal for a cat.
413374 - Aleeta, or Leet for short. She is a Tuxedo terrorist. She is 6 lbs of mood swings. She beat up Snoopy, the 55 lb dog, this evening. He appears to be deathly afraid of her at the moment. No kidding either - she is very sweet until the next moment when she is NOT. I think she needs bipolar meds.

My wife has had other cats as well, like PB (Short for Poopy Butt), Kuesse (aka Kisses) and Liebling. I had Duke and Worf. Yes, Worf. He was a warrior all right. Named by my son when he was 3.

My brother, a veterinarian, worked with a cat rescue group, and helped them find homes for some of the cats. You're away ahead of me.

'Lemon Drop' was found wandering the streets, clawless and starving. I don't know who named him that or why. He was cream-coloured with some topside markings that were kind of a dark yellow, but the name never seemed right.

He gained weight back - a lot, and this was a big-boned cat to begin with. He ended up looking like a great big bowl of French vanilla ice cream with butterscotch dressing. He liked to come into the bathroom when I was there, and liked to do this not in the normal cat way by pushing the door open just enough and slipping through, but by whomping the door open like stable gate. "Hey there, horse," I said once, and decided that was a better name.

My brother persuaded me that 'Horse' might be confusing on veterinary records, so I changed it to 'A Cat Named Horse'.

I got to know him better. Really big, really docile, really sweet, and really, really dumb. I changed his name to 'Lenny'. For records consistency, this was formally 'A Cat Named a Horse Called Lenny'.

Lenny had to go to my folks' when my own cat started beating up on him (when she realised that despite his much greater size he would not fight back). He died a couple years ago of an abdominal cancer. Honestly, the first clue was when he started losing his appetite. We'll miss him. Whatever the hell his name was. I don't think any of us really knew, except for him.

She really didn't know what color she wanted to be. And for some reason she only has 1 freckle on one side of her face lol.

Had a cat named Sam, but my dog kept pestering the cat and I kept yelling "Duke... leave sam alone!" So, the cat's name became Sam Malone.

Kitty Foyle is named after a 1940 movie.
Aliases Ratbag, BabyGirl (even tho she's 15), Ima Get You Kitty, Cat of Elegance and Beauty, Miss Pantalones, or C-A-T (tap her forehead 3 times while singing N-B-C chime melody).

My daughter's cats are named after cheese: Monterey Jack and Pepper Jack. Her friend's are now using names with jack but not cheese. So there is a blackjack, magic jack, (magic eight ball?) someone was not clear on the concept.

My cats have stupid names for stupid reasons. One of them is Kosmo. My ex- named him after the Seinfeld character but at the time I was more interested in Cosmos, but whatever. The other one my ex- named "Spawn" because he was a little terror. Until we found out he was a she. Then we renamed her Ivy.
