No, he really isn't. He ran and won on the notion of cleaning house, stopping wasteful spending and bureaucratic gridlock. What he ended up doing was simply adding on top of the wasteful spending with his own pet projects and nepotistic appointments. Now we're in worse shape than when we got rid of Davis.

Don't let his rejection of these illegal tax increases fool you either. He's only doing it because the dems wouldn't go far enough in relaxing environmental protections for companies.

True. I just never tire of people putting these people in charge and then honestly being surprised when shiat takes a dive.

Bush is classic example: We elected a full blooded oil baron to the whitehouse. Few years later "How the fukk them oil companies making record profits and why are we in iraq? I WANT ANSWERS DAMMIT"

For good or ill, Prop 13 isn't going anywhere. A politician would have a better chance of putting a 75% tax on Social Security benefits than he would of getting Prop 13 nixed.

As a californian living in the Sacramento area I can tell you my take on the problem. There is no room for moderates one side believes that the role of a government is to tax and spend and the other side will not even consider raising any taxes no matter how needed. The problem is also the people we vote for all of these bond measurements and also lock a certain amount of minimum spending on certain programs regardless of the fiscal reality. On a final note I would do away with the term limits, it gets rid of politicians just as they are learning there jobs and replaces them with complete idiots. The current speaker is a perfect example she is such a loud mouthed dictitorial harpy sne makes Pelosi seem nice and matronly.

Honestly, Ballot Initiatives are one of the biggest problems in California politics. I honestly believe that citizens shouldn't vote on individual laws because of the susceptibility of the populace towards good/bad marketing and advertising campaigns.

Essentially, the vast majority of the electorate is uninformed - which is why hopefully we elect people who are. We do a much better job as voters as measuring the success/failure of policy through observation, than we do at prognosticating the outcome.

My 2 cents of course.

Getting rid of Grey Davis was one of the very smart things the people of california have done in the last 20 years. But it's a worthless gesture when you replace an idiot with another idiot, and you fill up the legislature with idiots.

California was ground zero for the late 90's tech boom. millionaires were created over night money was flowing people bought cars, houses, $10,000 dinners and they'd paid taxes on all of it. California brought in an extra $35 billion in tax revenue and Grey Davis did absolutely everything within his power to funnel every last dollar into the sweet heart deals the state employee unions received. When the tech bubble burst and all those overnight millionaires went back to flipping burgers tax revenues fell by exactly 35 billion dollars. Except California was already contractually locked into spending that money that no longer existed. And so the first big financial crises from which all the other crises since have spawned. Kicking out Grey Davis was a good idea A better idea would have been to replace him with someone competant.

If all 50 states are plunging off an abyss into economic ruin. California threw itself over the cliff chained to an anvil screaming "I'm gonna win!"

I was here when we passed Prop 13. The property tax rate was in the vicinity of 3 percent of assessed value and it went up every year. People were getting taxed out of their homes and it was ugly. The state isn't starving for money. We have at or near the the country's highest rates on income, business, sales, and gasoline taxes. Even with the limitations imposed by Prop 13 the state is still in the middle of the range on property taxes. Our problem is out-of-control spending, not a lack of revenue.

TwistedFark 2009-01-08 12:18:30 AM
SCUBA_Archer: As opposed to the susceptibility of Legislators to Lobbyists?

Well, logically, at least a legislator has to make a conscious decision to go against what's right for the state (I suppose from his/her particular ideological standpoint) in order to play patty-cake with a lobbyist.

Citizens, however, don't do that - most of us take whatever we see on t.v. as the gospel truth (particularly if it's well presented or fits our preconceived notions or limited experience).

Like I said, us voters are far better served by voting against stuff than we are voting for stuff. We're terrible at predicting what's going to be the correct plan to take, mostly because democracy is really kind of shiat at making innovative decisions. We're just not well suited for. We are, however, extremely good at knowing when "shiat is farked up" - which goes well with the concept of voting people out of office for making mistakes.
