This is completely bumming me out, another legendary band is finished with

Thanks for showing us what a funhouse sounded like, Ron.

Your brutal, insistent and primitive guitar riffs was everything punk aspired to be. Thanks for teaching us that simplicity can hit you like a ton of bricks, thanks for bringing rock back to its very core

your devastating wall of nihilism will be sorely missed

That is sad, although I thought the three stooges had all died years ago.

you know, I was considering submitting this with that as part of the headline.

Sadly, Iggy's been dead since 1996. It's just that nobody can screw up enough courage to tell him.

FARKING THIS.

/I have the complete "Funhouse Sessions" on my iPod, so pretty much every day one of those 120+ tracks comes up on shuffle

Today We Mourn A Stooge.

balls .... I could say "I guess the Mosquito finally got him"

... or "Now the lead singer from Destroy All Monsters can go back to Radio Birdman"

.... or "who will buy Rock Action a root beer now?"

.... or "Say hi to Dave Alexander for me"

.... or "some guys will do anything to get out of mom grounding you for dropping out of school to go to England to buy some Beatle boots"

but I guess I'll just say "Thanks" for letting me jump onstage and put my head practically inside your amp during "I Wanna Be Your Dog" at the Orpheum in Boston a few years back. And thank god you guys were actually able to get back together and create some seriously good memories and go out as "on top" as 3 degenerates from Ann Arbor could.

See ya, you awesome semi-fat bastard. I'll drink a beer for you in Ypsilanti if I'm ever out that way.

Y'know what would be depressingly awesome? If they played all 9 minutes of "We Will Fall" for his funeral procession.

That would be creepy rock awesomeness.

ghoulie_mask 2009-01-06 01:28:18 PM
nope, a tribute to number 30, Gerry Cheevers, B's legend.

But let us get back to mourning a Stooge.

Damn. Saw them at Lollapalooza '07. They absolutely killed. Iggy invited the crowd to rush the stage and when they did, the band just kept on playing. Harder. And louder. Especially Ron.

An incredibly awesome show, and an indelible memory for me.

RIP. And goodnight, funhouse man.

Damn, this is awful. I actually knew him through a friend that Ron did a movie for. Today's not a good day at all. And even though the movie didn't make a lot of cash, Ron did a lot of good work on it, and...it's just a bummer, man. I don't know what else to say.

Yep. They did the same with one of the guys in Dave Clark Five.

wigglebiscuit 2009-01-06 04:18:08 PM
I put Fun House on as soon as I heard. Damn, what a shame. How Iggy and Scott outlasted him is a mystery for the ages.

I read 'Please Kill Me' a few years ago, and Ron came off as probably the nicest guy in the book. The story of him becoming friends with a post-stroke Larry Fine (from the other Stooges) was really cool.

/Rest in Peace, you glorious Stooge.

Valdes 2009-01-06 04:34:53 PM
That said, I hope James Williamson gets to be in the R&R HOF ceremony in Asheton's place. Are he and Iggy on bad terms?

This is the only thing that makes me feel sort of ok about this:

The early line-up of the Stooges are touring with Iggy, but without you? Would you play with them again if they asked you?

The Stooges have been up for Hall of Fame a number of different times and they never made it and we probably will never make it, but if they did and they wanted me to I would do that for them. I would rehearse it. I can still play, I'm a bit rusty. But I don't think I would do a Stooges reunion. There were some great days and it's good to be young, but other than that it was pretty tough. Although there were good memories too. We were young and wild and unfettered by anything, skipping out on hotel bills and doing nutty stuff.

goddammit that fu*king sucks...

Valdes: Are he and Iggy on bad terms?

I dunno about now, but AFAIK they ended on bad terms back in the 70's. My memory of 'Please Kill Me' says Ron seemed pretty negative about Williamson too, though that may be because the guy took his guitar gig and Ron got demoted to bass.

/I like Asheton's playing a lot more than Williamson's, though James is the more technically skilled guitarist.

As a youngin who really wanted to see The Stooges one day, this news is a big heartbreak. Henry Rollins was right when he said that everyone should have a copy of 'Fun House'.

R.I.P. Ron Asheton

Didn't the reunited Stooges refuse to play any Williamson-era songs?

And all the bootlegs done after Raw Power was issued before the band broke up too.

I'm really choked that I never saw the reunited Stooges now. Fun House is one of my favourite albums ever and this is really heartbreaking.

I don't know if they refused, but when I saw them at the Memphis in May show, they didn't do anything off of Raw Power, so I would guess that was the case.

/crazy awesome show
