What goes through Roethlesberger's mind during a play:

'Hike!' Ok, I'm dropping back now, dropping back. Was it supposed to be a 10 step or a 12 step drop? How many steps have I already taken? Oh well, this seems about good. Ok I guess I should look down field now... Hines Ward? Not open. Sh*t. Oh crap, here comes a guy to tackle me, I guess I should get rid of the ball. No, let's hold on to it and see what happens. Side step, side step. Phew that was close. Ok, now I should definately get rid of the ball, but there's no one open and I really want to throw it to someone. Oh crap, Ben, here comes another guy, time to vacate the pocket. Running, running, running. Ok that bought a couple seconds, now what. Well, this guy wrapped around my legs is slowing me down quite a bit. It might be time to get rid of the ball seeing as two linebackers are about to hit me really hard. No, let's take the hit like a man. Plus the fans will think I'm tough. What's another injury anyways?

insano: Roethlesmcbergerstein is terrible

He's hardly terrible. I mean, yes: right now, his QB rating is 80.1. Not good, especially considering the caliber of the team he's playing on.

Of course, when he last played the Chargers, he went 31/41 for 308 yards. No INTs.

Personally? I don't think there's any one problem on the Steelers offense. I just think the entire offense hasn't come together as a strong unit.

Funny thing is, I understand that people think LT is whiny after some of his comments and his sideline demeanor.... but Rivers? Whiny? Not really. He does mouth off quite a bit and honestly, the only whining I have seen is people who complain that he like to jaw.

I went to a Chargers preseason game this year and watched as all the starters played a few downs and then inched their way to the locker room for the rest the game. Meanwhile Rivers had to finally be pulled at halftime by Norv, he wouldn't stop running out with the second and third stringer offensive players. He spent the rest of teh pre-season game walking up and down the sidelines following every play, yelling encouragement and talking about plays with guys who hadn't even secured a spot on the roster. I don't know him personally but I just haven't seen anything that suggests he is the douchebag that people want him to be.

If you have a problem with players talking trash to each other, go watch golf. This is football. It's a badass, fast moving, hard hitting, intense game. He's not talking to you and you have no idea what kind of trash Cutler or anyone else is saying on the field. The only whining I have heard is from people complaining about his whining.

Dear Coach Tomlin,

Start Byron Leftwich and keep Big Ben out of service until such time that he decides to throw touchdowns to people in black and gold uniforms and not cough up the ball at the 3-yard line.

Sincerely,

A Steelers fan

The problem is not Big Ben, the problem is the awful, awful Steelers line. You have to hold on and make plays yourself when the pocket collapses that quick.

It's funny to hear people blame him for everything, though. Doubly so when people want Leftwich to play.

ElwoodCuse: The problem is not Big Ben, the problem is the awful, awful Steelers line.

The problem is Ben, the line, the non-existent ground game (caused in part by the line, by the lack of competent play design/calling). Everything about the offense is wrong.

I really think that it's the lack of the ground game that hurts the most. The Steelers have never been a team that wins on their quarterback's arm. With our clumsy o-line, runners don't get the blocking they need. For some reason, Arians doesn't run plays where the runningback gets a lead block from a fullback. Since the o-line can't tie up the defense, it's impossible for Parker to bounce to the outside and put up the sorts of yardage he usually does.

Also, after watching the Chargers' punter pin the Colts again and again, I really miss Sepulveda.

ElwoodCuse 2009-01-06 10:30:30 AM
Oh for sure. You could do Mitch Berger burns all week.

jake3988 2009-01-06 10:30:39 AM
Roethlisberger has sucked ass all year and we're only 12-4 because of our defense. If our defense was even #2 in the league, we'd be out of the playoff picture.

Roethlisberger needs to rest until at LEAST next week. Leftwich has been awesome when called upon.

Put Leftwich in, damn it.

Bartleby the Scrivener 2009-01-06 10:42:49 AM
i agree with teknomanser and jake.

the problem with the offense is not localized to one person. it's the whole unit from Arians on down. Arians has not shown an ability to call plays in response to changing defense, the line collapses, parker has been injury prone and inconsistent, nate washington drops gimmes (but does step up under pressure), roethlisberger gets banged up (or feigns injury after a puff tackle), and so on. surprisingly, the steelers have done their best when they go no-huddle. i'd bench ben for this game and let leftwich step up; he's shown an ability to do so, stays calm in a tight pocket, and can scramble when he needs to. start moore as well, and let parker get hungry.

also, without the d, the steelers would have been 8-8, maybe 7-9.
if...if...they win the super bowl, the whole d should get MVP.

Hines Ward is a dirty, dirty player. His little Cheshire grin makes you let your guard down...

CD_Ridge 2009-01-06 10:50:44 AM
It appears to me that Arians shoulders a lot of the blame for the lack of offensive production this year. When the Steelers go no-huddle with Ben calling the plays, they move the ball more effectively. Arians' play calling is too predictable.

He then somehow gets the pass off, hits santonio holmes wide open for a touchdown.

Yes, he gets hit a lot, yes he holds onto the ball a lot, but he also creates big plays from extending the play a lot...

Last year, especially in the beginning of the year, no one seemed to complain about Arians when the Steelers offense was putting up 30 points no problem and Willie Parker lead the league in rushing...

One year with a terrible line, and massive injuries to the RBs, and everyone wants his head, now. Arians is fine, a good OC... he just needs a consistent offense and a line that will hold up.

FortKnox: He then somehow gets the pass off, hits santonio holmes wide open for a touchdown...but he also creates big plays from extending the play a lot...

sure, but that should be the exception, not the rule. if those plays are made, it communicates to the offensive line that what they're doing is sufficient. if he needs time, it should be from protection and not panic.

also, as an addendum, the steelers have historically rushed ben back in after an injury (most notably after the motorcycle/appendicitis thing). yes, it's a playoff game, but i'd rather have decent back-up at 100 percent than a starter at 80 percent.

Man, I'm getting tired of so-called Steeler fans and their bandwagon attitude towards starting QBs. Ben is one of the best QBs in the league. Leftwich is a retread, a good retread, but his starting days are over.

Our offensive trouble is entirely O-line related. The only reason we won 12 games this year is because of Ben and our defense.

sure, good play means less criticism; the point is that when things are going bad, you have to adapt your play in response to the problems. for example, when parker is getting negative yardage on the run (see the tennessee game), you call different plays. of course there's also the distinction between the play that's called and the play that's executed. like i said, i don't place the blame on one person; the offense as a unit has been miserable. the only solid players have been hines ward and heath miller.

Save your breath. You'll never convince any of these idiot haters that he isn't a douchebag. Just sit back and watch him win games.

I see a great defense (Pit) going up against a great offense (SDG). I see a mediocre offense (Pit) going up against a good defense (SDG).

it's just as bad to be a big ben fanboy who can't recognize his limitations. ben is good, but he's not good for right now. if you're skiing for the gold medal, would you use skis with broken bindings because they're the ones you're used to, or use another set with solid ones?

The problem is that Parker has absolutely no business being an every down back because he could never run between the tackles. Bastage ruined my fantasy team twice getting 1200 whatever yards in a season and only 2 TDs because he can't plow through a goalline defense.

The Steelers are a traditional power run team and they don't have a power runner. I'm surprised they didn't go after Duckett in the offseason, but they thought they could use Davenport to fill those needs and that obviously didn't work.

What limitations? He holds the ball a little long, so what. He also makes a lot of plays out of nothing, has great arm strength, good accuracy and reads defenses pretty well. If he could get 1-2 seconds more in the pocket out of his line, he'd be racking up numbers this year.

What would going to Leftwich get you? Other than a fresh face? Leftwich has had very little playing time all year and you want to start THAT guy in your first playoff game?
