(Rolling Stone) Cool U2 break down new album, which includes 7-minute track with "Joshua Tree-style gospel feel." Also likely to have "Rattle & Hum" kind of preaching, ending in: "Am I buggin' you? I didn't mean to bug you"   (rollingstone.com) divider line 53

As usual, Liters Love U2.

Also, U2 just sucks for reasons beyond hipster snobbery. They just don't make interesting music. At all. It's the same reason why Nickelback is popular - if you make the same song 15 times in a row, morons will love it.

Tell ya what, sell as many albums and concert tickets as they have and see if you're not just a bit pretentious yourself. When you accomplish as much as they have you're not acting like you're better than everyone else, you ARE better than them. I'd say they should stop being to pretentious when they start selling fewer and fewer albums.
Also, as for them "recording the same song 15 times," so what? Even if they do record the same song 15 times it's still better than all the other crap out there. Not only that but people rip them when they change (90's U2, or for that matter anything past their first few albums) and then rip them when they don't change (All That You Can't Leave Behind). Which is it people, same old stuff or new stuff? You can't rip them for doing BOTH.

to work off these two statements: you really can't play the "Pretentious Indie Hipster" card when U2's probably about as pretentious as it gets and were indie darlings in the early 80s.

I don't quite get the hate for U2, but I also don't get the love for their last few by-the-numbers albums.

They did their 90's albums (which I personally loved) but most people hated because they were different than their previous stuff. They learned their lesson and then started making albums that they knew people would like by going back to their older stuff which so many people claim are so great. Like I said before, I'd rather take a song rerererererecorded by U2 over most of the other crap that's out there now and apparently I'm not alone in this opinion.

U2's last two albums are NOT "back to their older stuff". They stopped being weird, but now they just make bland radio pop.

So startlingly ignorant I don't know where to start.

One of the band's hallmarks, one of the thing sthat has earned them critical acclaim for years upon years, has been repeatedly reinventing their sound. Love them or hate them, either is fine by me, but to deny this is to pretty much announce your ignorance.

Which judging by the critical and popular response seems to be working out ok for them. They tried experimental stuff. It didn't work. They make the stuff people want to hear. It is well received. Why wouldn't they?
Also, the standard of weird is different now than it was 20 years ago. What's normal today is quite revolutionary back then. Not only that but, amazingly enough, men in their 40's sound a bit different than young men. Shocking isn't it? Especially when you consider that most of their audiance has aged too. The horror of it all.....

U2 should hang it up. Their music blows lyrically and melodically (Uno, dos, tres, catorce?, meaning 1,2,3,14!), and Bono is a piss ant who wants to be granted sainthood. They absolutely suck, and it's okay if you like them. But their music means nothing to me.

Wow, a band should just hang it up if they don't meet one person's approval. And people talk about U2 being full of themselves!

I'm not the only person in the world who has nothing but disdain for U2. Their songs all run together, and Bono really is not a very good singer. I'm sure their last few albums were auto-tuned, because the man lacks talent. If I could sum up U2 in a sentence fragment, it would be "depressing, lousy music for teen movies".

sorry, but I won't let "the other crap out there" set the bar that low. If newer U2 is the best you can find, that's pretty sad. I can't say newer U2 is bad, but it's not terribly interesting.

shoegaze99: So startlingly ignorant I don't know where to start.

Yes, because a headline where the singer describes the music in the terms of a previous album is clearly indicative of their ability to reinvent oneself.

At least AC/DC has the big balls to admit they only really have 8 songs

I'm in the "doesn't care for recent U2" camp. But Achtung Baby is one a best farking albums ever made. In any genre. Upon release it was roundly trashed by a lot of U2 faithful, but history has definitely been kind to it. For some reason (to my ear, anyway), they just went straight to Suck after that. But that album was incredibly ballsy and defiant both in tone and in departure from that 'U2 sound.' And the tour was pretty mind-blowing, too.

Don't get me wrong, I think their 3 albums from the 90's were their best. Most people, however, didn't particularly agree though, at least with the last two.

Stay Cool Babylon 2009-01-06 01:40:51 PM
BTW, the girl I took to "Zoo TV" in '92 or so actually said, "Bono is so sexy I'd fark him in front of my mother."

There wasn't much for me to say to that. I do remember thinking, "Jesus, I'm standing right here!" I guess it doesn't matter, because I got some later that night and poor Bono had to be content with his millions of panty-drowning female fans. Sucker!

I wish U2 would have stuck to their Joshua Tree guns. That album was incredible and a nice edition to their impressive catalog at the time. Ever since Discotheque, however, they have done nothing but stain their once impeccable record. Maybe this one will turn things around. One can hope.

A lot of people feel that way. But "Pop" is actually a concept album (a fact that, AFAIK, the band has never talked much about), and after I finally understood it, it became a lot more listenable.

(Hint: watch the video for "Please", then go back and listen to "Do you feel loved" and "Playboy Mansion".)

"The point is," he said, "that people like you and me, Slartibartfast, and Arthur--particularly and especially Arthur--are just dilettantes, eccentrics, layabouts if you like."
Slartibartfast frowned, partly in puzzlement and partly in umbrage. He started to speak.
"...." is as far as he got.
"We're not obsessed by anything, you see," insisted Ford.
"...."
"And that's the deciding factor. We can't win against obsession. They care, we don't. They win."
