From TFA:

Alarmed passengers huddled away from three sets of open doors, through which cars could be seen below on Stewardson Way as the train sped to 22nd Street station

Yeah, because if you get near the open door, it'll suck you out or something.

Same. Dare we dream of a sequenced trifecta?

They should find the asshole passenger that forced one set of door's open and possibly triggered the rest of them to be frozen open and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.

I hate jackasses who think because they were not paying attention think they can go around backing up on interstates or putting other people in danger in order to save some time.

FreakinB 2009-01-04 10:39:04 PM
I'm picturing this happening on my subway to work, which is usually very crowded. Even underground, that would suck.

rackrent [TotalFark] 2009-01-04 10:39:21 PM
Hey, I was just wondering if anyone has mentioned that there is a "100 foot" trifecta in play?

rancidPlasma 2009-01-04 10:41:10 PM
New West to 22nd station is one of the longest spans too. I would have sat with my feet dangling outside for shiats and giggles. Pussies.

Don't you know that doors being open on things above the ground cause them to hurtle out-of-control to the ground, followed by a huge fireball?

/Hollywood always shows it that way.
//Tom Cruise wouldn't lie, would he?
///oh, wait. nevermind.

GODDAMN! The train took off???? I would have paid big money to see a train zooming down the runway and heading for cruising altitude. Anyone got a video?

YOu know, as an old urban explorer who has faced everything from unexpected torrents of sewer water and up to giant ants (a tip of the hat to James Arness and Co.), open train doors sound very interesting. Where are my blasted flashlights and boots?

FritztheCat 2009-01-04 10:43:33 PM
Right now, it appears there is a possibility of 3 different articles showing up on the front page of Fark that involve '100 ft.' in one form or another.

Yeah, because if you get near the open door, it'll suck you out or something.

No... but if you've ever ridden on the Skytrain around that section of track you'd know it goes through a fairly large turn complete with the track tipping slightly and centripetal acceleration in that area. Not to mention Skytrain isn't the smoothest ride in the world to begin with. It isn't likely you'd be bounced out of the door, but not impossible. Prudence wins over bravado.

It's not being sucked out but some other passenger pushing you out.

A lot of psychos in this world... sometimes you don't want to take the chance one is standing near you.

Under ordinary conditions a train won't move if the automated system detects a door open," Hardie said, who added there will be a safety review to try to determine exactly what happened and how to prevent it recurring.

...technicians were also working on doors at the far end of the four-car train and had disabled the alarm.

I like when these things resolve themselves

This was the guy -- he was trying to collect on his life insurance. They'll never find him though, because of course he was sucked out the door.

As soon as I saw the headline i know it was about the Skytrain. They claim it's one-in-a-million but that's a huge lie. It happened when I was on board twice, and one time it closed on my foot and started moving before I pulled free.

It's a piece of crap. Can't handle snow to extreme rain, overcrowded, occasionally stops dead in between stations for up to an hour.

RoyBatty: My headline, "Man walks into a bar with a 100' pianist" was rejected, so that's not the trifecta.

The jury is still out on "Child falls 100 feet in a heroic attempt to complete a consecutive trifecta."

Old story, but you Google what fits.

This isn't all that scary; it can be fun. I've traveled a bit by train through India, and they let you open the doors and hang out if you want:

www.smh.com.au

/Yes, I realize that the train in TFA was high off the ground.

It was a maintenance worker who overrode the door then forgot to reset it.

TransLink officials say security video shows one set of doors were forced open by a passenger at the platform.

That would normally have triggered an alarm and prevented the train from leaving.

That was just the alarms, the door's being opened was caused by a jackass passenger.

SuperCatBarf: It's okay, little one. Mommy has youw baba aaaall ready-weady for you, and nobody moved your binky fwom wight wewe you weft it.

Yes, because biatching about stupid people backing up on interstates to get to their exit and people prying doors open on subways causing them to be stuck open is things only sissies worry about. Spend more time doing something useful and less time trying to be a smart-ass because you fail horribly at the later.

Especially underground. If you're talking about something like NYC's Subway or the T in Boston (well, Red/Blue/Orange), those things can move pretty fast and aren't spaced that far apart (like...less than 5 minutes). Also, third rails, if I recall correctly.
