(YouTube) Video The Temptations' most covered song, "Ball of Confusion" was re-done by Duran Duran, the Neville Brothers, Tina Turner, Widespread Panic, Anthrax and Tesla. This is arguably the best cover, by Love & Rockets   (youtube.com) divider line 45

"Express" is a great album of theirs, but anyone remembers when they were called Tones On Tails, (same band +1 guy) ??????

they had that great song "GO" (new window)

I'm asking, because it used to play all the time in the 80s and now I can't believe there isn't even a video for that song, let alone any footage of Tones On tails on YouTube, which is kind of sad

Yeah...I had one of those t-shirts with the psycho dude screaming in the corner of the brick wall. My GFs kept stealing 'em. Only my 45 Grave T-Shirt disappeared faster.

I can't believe how under-rated this album is. I'd say it ranks up with Echo and the Bunnymen and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

I'm pretty sure Tones on Tail was half of Bauhaus (Ash + Kevin Haskin) and with a Bauhaus roadie on bass.

Love and Rockets is underrated, period. They don't get enough credit, methinks.

Anything is arguably the best anything, depending on who's doing the arguing.

Seventh dream, Express and E,S,M were seminal albums for me in h.s and college. The eponymous follow up less so.

Back when it was called "College rock."

Does that term even exist any more?

/old.

I have never heard these guys but this track is pretty cool. I am going to have to check out the recomended albums mentioned above. Thanks for the suggestions I always love checking out new stuff.

Nothing beats The Temps version though.

Eh eh

See what you did there. And I love that song, which I knew for years before i actually heard the real version. Which of course, was a little disappointingly slow-paced compared to this really awesome version. As a matter of fact, Third_Uncle_Enowhen I see your handle it makes me think of that song... and you're right, David J. , the bassist of Love & rockets does look like Lou Reed when he had that dye job

That was David J, their bassist. I actually saw him perform his solo work (ain't so good) at University of Illinois in 1993. I tried to talk to him, but he was aloof.

Regardless, Love and Rockets, Bauhaus, and Tones on Tail were my favorite bands in high school. I was always frustrated that So Alive was the track that got airtime, because they had so many better songs. My sister's Express tape is what turned my rock light bulb on, and it's been burning brightly ever since. It's super awesome to see them finally get some props.

thank you very much good sir. see, this is why you're one of my fav. music related farkers. lol :-) :-P
wow that was one cool cover.
sounds very new wave / post punk.
me likey! :-D

i don't know anything about either band, but.....
if Love and Rockets are 3/4 of Bauhaus, then was Bauhaus like a more "extreme / out there / experimental" offshoot of Love and Rockets? and L & R more mainstream?

p.s. thanks for getting me into that spacey/loopy/groovy band i think it was spaceman3 or something... early 90's...
[me thinks they had something to do with Spiritualized later on? i'm not 99% sure]

I strongly suggest you listen to "The SKy's Gone Out" by Bauhaus, a classic (it opens with the Eno cover). Long story short, Bauhaus broke up and the band carried on without the singer, eventually as Love & Rockets

here's Another example of classic Bauhaus which isnt a cover (new window), see if you like

DaMacGuy 2009-01-05 06:04:41 AM
So Alive is pretty good by L+R, but I love Saudade (found on Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven). Its not a alt-rock song, no lyrics, very nice (semi-gothic?).

Tones on Tail were good, but Bauhaus is the classic of course.

craigdamage 2009-01-05 06:38:27 AM
David J is one of the single most underrated bass players of all time. In a way he is somewhat similar to Tracy Pew of Birthday Party in that their basslines are often simple but can really drive an entire song. David J also got one of the best bass tones in the 80s unlike all other bass players. His sound was deep and warm with a kinda "dub" fatness like Jah Wobble but he was also a really good rock bassist and had some really funky lines too. "Kick in the Eye"

Back in the 80s I bought my first fretless bass guitar.(David J had a fretless Fender P-bass) and I immediately discovered "I ain't no Jaco Pastorious"

However,I found I could easily copy "Hollow Hills" and "Of Lillies and Remains" so I was happy.

That song just kicks serious ass the way it is. Don't get me wrong, love's me the Rockets as much as the next guy, but, this is one of those cases where everyone should have left good enough alone.

Bauhaus came first. I'm not too familiar with Bauhaus, so I can't really compare overall. I'd say L&R are the more poppy of the two, but only because Bauhaus aren't, really.

more L&R:

The Light
Dog-end of a Day gone By
Yin and Yang (The Flowerpot Man) (one of my favorites)

Third_Uncle_Eno: p.s. thanks for getting me into that spacey/loopy/groovy band i think it was spaceman3 or something... early 90's...

you're welcome! Yes, Spacemen 3's final line-up (Pretty much less Peter Kember) mutated into Spiritualized. the last half of their Recurring album is more ore less Spiritualized's debut EP.

IF you like Spacemen 3, I'd suggest trying Loop as well. Peter Kember swears up and down they ripped him off, but I don't really see it outside of "I'll take You There" sounding a little too much like S3's "Things Won't Be the Same".

Loop's first two singles were compiled onto the World In Your Eyes compilation, so I'd probably recommend there for a start. (however, Robert is remastering their stuff right now and this is getting some massive 3-disc treatment with all their singles compiled) Their 3 albums afterward are still in the same droney, out-there psychedelia, but more rock-based.

there's not really much on youtube about them either. What is there, even though I like the tracks, I think are odd choices for singles. I'd recommend the tracks: Black Sun (full 5-minute version for the trippy guitar speaker hopping), Straight to Your Heart, Pulse, Vapour, Spinning (i'd try this first), etc.

Loop videos:

Arc-Lite
Collision
From Centre to Wave

the last two just sound kind of odd as they're obviously edited towards the end (and best parts!)

["ladies and gentlemen we're floating in space" is real hit or miss with me... part of me thinks it's boring, then there's a few good songs... then there's a track of just plain noise, then a superlong jazzy jam about cops....
the ultimate "come down from a high" album?]

i listened to "let it come down" with "stop your crying", which was the only song i liked from it, in the end. the rest was boring lol

p.s. did Bauhaus issue a Greatest Hits album? or any collection?
how easy/hard is it to find their early singles the Eno cover, the Trex cover, and that "bela lugosi's dead" 12inch?

YOu wont find all that in one album, although the "Skys gone out" has the Bowie, Eno song and is pretty awesome throughout. There's a "best of" called "Crackle" which is good I guess.... but its one of those bands I take issue in breaking songs apart and putting it in their incorrect orders... They also have vol 1 and vol 2 "greatest hits"(one is white one is black) but im not too excited by the song choices

shrimper 2009-01-05 04:45:27 PM
heh - "Go" (Tones On Tail) was used in the Adventure Island commercials back in the 80's - I guess they had some pretty hip people in marketing back then. Their slogan was 'get your ya ya's in the wa wa", so "ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya yaaaa" worked pretty good.

I like their Lazer-Guided Melodies album the best. Ladies and Gentlemen is good, but I really don't get all the accolades for the album. Pure Phase is good too but is begging for a remaster (as are the first two S3 albums). Everything else by Spiritualized I like, but they're not something I listen too much.

This really brings back memories! Lots of good tunes by the many offshoots of Bauhaus. I think I saw L&R in Dallas, but cant remember for sure... There are alot of shows I'm told I was at, but thats another matter.

/Peter Murphy's solo stuff was audio panty remover for a certain class of goth chick back in the days.
