I have encountered one of the people mentioned in the article on at least one occasion. I was not impressed.

Good job, PETA. Taking a sick kitten out of its pen and putting in the freezer overnight, then realizing its still alive, then putting it in a shopping bag, taking it out back, and smashing it against the side of a dumpster repeatedly until it stops screaming? Yeah, no need to do anything about that. That's not really animal cruelty. Milking a cow, on the other hand, is a horribly abusive, painful, life-threatening practice that needs to be stopped immediately.

Fark PETA. They're the NRA of the left.

floor9: Good job, PETA.

Not defending PETA in any way here, but a while back, Petco would commonly do this (put their sick animals in the freezer to 'euthanize' them) among other horrible things. PETA set up a pretty effective boycott and got them to change their ways.

also, Port Dare? Are they relatives of the Palins?

Then there's some light at the end of the tunnel. Because obviously, the legal process has failed. Time for consumer activism.

that's why it more humane to just drown them. oh, if they're grown make sure you wear some work gloves.

dude. PETA had nothing to do with this.

SilentStrider: dude. PETA had nothing to do with this.

True, but their priorities are so far out of whack with reality. They're a living, breathing definition of burning down a forest to save a tree. PA is plagued with puppy mills, animals all over the country are being euthanized in shelters because there are too many strays running around, and our animal cruelty laws are a slap on the wrist at best. PETA, instead of doing anything useful, spends its life protesting milk.

They could be helping to protect animals. Instead, they jerk off over Iams.

fark PETA. Were I to know of an operation like this within driving distance, you'd have trouble talking me out of all sorts of criminal offenses. There's stupidity, and then there's neglect, and then there are the sick farks who do stuff like this.

adamgreeney 2009-01-04 12:29:00 PM
I don't really think that PETA is involved in this in any way, and all the mentions of it are just morons trying to trash an organization they don't like (much like people do to the NRA when ever the word "gun" comes up).

On that note, Fark PETA. And fark this guy. I hope someone gets to smash his head into a dumpster until he stops screaming.

/violence to animals and children is never, ever ok.

They can't be involved in EVERYTHING. They boycotted him once before right? And I'm sure this will get them to go even further this time. They can't know BEFORE something happens.

/Still, Fark them.

adamgreeney: They can't be involved in EVERYTHING. They boycotted him once before right? They can't know BEFORE something happens.

They didn't. And this guy / place should've been shut down back in 2002 when the DumpsterKitten (tm) incident took place. Instead, he got 15 days in jail, was told to never do that again, and -- surprise -- his store is again being charged with animal cruelty.

Again, I say good job to PETA. Instead of doing real work that makes real differences in the lives of animals -- such as, for example, actually outlawing puppy mills or getting repeat-offender stores like this shut down -- they erect billboards threatening anyone with a fur handbag.

After all, why fight for real change, when screaming bloody murder over milk gets so much more news coverage?

it just seemed like another pet store. I had no idea of the behind the scenes shenannigans going on.

Glad I got my pets from someplace other than a pet store (dog from the inlaws who'd just had a litter, cat from a co-worker who couldn't continue to take care of him))

micah 2009-01-04 01:31:32 PM
Yeah, PETA should totally work to get animal cruelty made illegal so that someone that does something like this would be arrested and tried. Stupid PETA jerks.

PETA is baloney, this idiot is in the wrong business and the only way to get anybody's attention in the market place is to STOP GIVING THEM YOUR MONEY AND START MAKING A LOT OF NOISE ABOUT HOW BADLY THEY SUCK.

kemidra 2009-01-04 01:38:02 PM
I love how people are complaining that PETA ignores shiat like this so that they can protest milking cows. Do you realize that you are completely taking the focus off shiat like this and placing it on PETA? Throwing in a little "oh yeah and this store sucks too" doesn't really count when you take an article that had NOTHING to do with PETA and turning it into yet another PETA bashing thread.

If history teaches us anything, it's that any organization which so cleverly replaces the "s" with a "z" in its name, is operated by individuals of the highest moral and ethical standards.

people taking out their economic frustrations on cats. so sad. cats don't run for office. cats don't give huge tax cuts for big businesses and the rich. cats don't ship jobs overseas for cheap labor.
pathetic.

If you think that the NRA is the equivalent of the ACLU, you may be retarded.

The ACLU has principles and will stand up for the rights of anyone, whether they agree with them or not.

The NRA used to have principles. They traded them for power within the Republican Party.

I dont see why people buy cats at a pet store anyways- adopt a stray morans.

The comments are a hoot. A couple of the posts are customers who are defending the POS because he "keeps the store clean."

Brettster808: I'm confused. What did PETA have to do with this incident?

Absolutely nothing. That's the problem; PETA doesn't actually do anything to protect animals.

explody_pup: snapperheads

As soon as I heat that word, I always assume the speaker is missing his front teeth, is wearing a stained wife beater, and jerks off to Hannity's America.

I don't know why.

I Like Chocolate Milk! 2009-01-04 01:47:52 PM
PETA wouldn't be involved in something like this because it's not "sensational" enough for them. A pet store owner harming innocent animals won't bring them nearly as much attention as having braindead celebrities running around naked to protest fur.

Seriously, if you want a group involved that is actually interested in the animals welfare as opposed to their own pocketbooks, contact the ASPCA (not PETA or the HSUs).

oldballs 2009-01-04 01:49:26 PM
I would have fed that cat to my dog instead.

Flushmonkii: The comments are a hoot. A couple of the posts are customers who are defending the POS because he "keeps the store clean."

Newspaper site comments, and PennLive's especially, are always good for a few hoots. I can just envision some WHP-580-listening, tin-foil-hat-wearing, neckbeard-sporting, trailer-park-dweller banging out that comment about how the store "isn't so bad", then sitting back with the smug satisfaction of thinking he just thoroughly owned the entire Internet.

TheMega 2009-01-04 01:50:14 PM
Sort'a makes ya want to take a vacation to someplace where you can take someone and bash them against a dumpster a couple times.

/just to stay within the thread, PETA is a WPITA

Coco LaFemme [TotalFark] 2009-01-04 01:50:45 PM
The person who did that to the kitten should be strapped down to a table and castrated with a butter knife.

KiwDaWabbit 2009-01-04 01:52:03 PM
PETA is just interested in finding more efficient ways of euthanizing animals so they can incorporate it into their own euthinization program.

Hey, Iams was treating cats and dogs about as well as this pet store owner in their testing of pet food. They had hundreds of cats and dogs in tiny metal cages, basically treated them like crap, subjected them to unnecessary pain, and then had the nerve to make their mushy, cutesy TV ads about feeding your pets Iams in the most sickeningly, lovey-dovey manner. The company's excuse is that they needed to do scientific research to make sure their pet food is the best but really, if someone is that damn worried about feeding their pet the best they should just buy their dog steak instead of just slightly better grade of baked corn/soy/rendered animal fat kibble.

Any owner who treated their pet like Iams was treating their test animals would be going to jail. However, if you have a lab coat and take live muscle biopsies from a couple hundred dirty, neglected, abused beagles you can get away with a lot more than just being some asshole who kicks his beagle in the head out in some trailer park. Like I said, if someone wants to feed their pet the best food, just give them real meat instead of commercial kibble, no matter what the stupid sentimental ads on TV say.

Bucky Katt [TotalFark] 2009-01-04 01:53:23 PM
I know it's a standard FARKism to hate on PETA, but they're not even mentioned in the article. Anger should be directed toward the shiathead store owner.

BitwiseShift 2009-01-04 01:53:36 PM
Next time you have a Philly Cheesesteak, realize that pet food means something different in Pennsylvania. Oh, and don't chip your tooth on that cat collar.

Genevieve Marie [TotalFark] 2009-01-04 01:53:57 PM
This is why people NEED to stop patronizing pet stores, period. They buy puppy mill dogs (no reputable breeder would sell to a pet store), they keep them in small cages, they don't socialize them properly and a whole host of other wrongs. Adopt an animal and at least help out the problem.

/also hates Peta. And pet stores.*

*except obviously stores that don't sell animals but host adoption days instead
